Definitions
- the present invention relates to an exercise apparatus, comprising a substantially flat base portion, at least having a first part which is intended for a person using the exercise apparatus to sit on, as well as a second part, which is provided with a pillow-like body portion of flexible material projecting from said base portion and which is intended for yieldably engaging and supporting a person.
- the present invention aims to provide an exercise apparatus which provides a better comfort for the person using said apparatus.
- the present invention aims to provide an exercise apparatus which can be used in workout procedures for various muscle groups and which, in use, does not put a load on parts of the human body, other than the muscle group(s) to be trained.
- the present invention provides for an exercise apparatus according to the preamble, which is characterised in that the form of the apparatus is at least partially adapted to the shape of a human body.
- the invention is based on the insight that the provision of a soft underground, such as the base portion being padded with a thin layer of foam, alone is not sufficient in order to provide the best comfort, but that an optimal comfort can only be reached by adapting the form of the exercise apparatus to the shape of the human body.
- the first part of the base portion is provided with at least one opening, intended to support the tailbone of a person using the exercise apparatus.
- the opening advantageously has a length between 4 and 6 cm and a width between 1,5 and 2 cm.
- At least part of the body portion is reinforced so that said part locally provides for a stronger support of the human body.
- the choice of the part of the apparatus which is being reinforced depends on the specific use of the apparatus, as well as on the body shape of the person using the apparatus.
- the body portion is at least laterally reinforced. Such reinforcement provides for a better support of the lumbar region of the human body. Obviously, the reinforcement of the body portion should be such that a person execising on the apparatus is not impeded in his or her movement.
- the base portion of the apparatus according to the present invention is advantageously provided with handles.
- the pulling strength of the abdominal muscles can be somewhat lower.
- the exercise apparatus is provided with a detachable upholstery.
- a detachable upholstery is in particular preferred because of hygienic reasons.
- the upholstery is also washable.
- the present invention also relates to the use of an exercise apparatus according to the above for performing muscle strengthening exercises in general. That is to say, the present invention does not only claim the use of the apparatus according to the present invention for workout exercises for the abdominal area, but also for other parts, in particular muscle groups, of the body, such as for example the musculus gluteus maximus.
- Figure 1 schematically shows an exercise apparatus 1 according to the present invention, comprising a substantially flat base portion 3, having a first part 3A which can be used by a person to sit on, as well as a second part 3B, which is provided with a pillow-like, body portion 5 of flexible material projecting from said base portion and which is intended for yieldably engaging and supporting a person.
- the body portion 5 has a top, bottom, front, back and side surfaces and a rounded upper front corner between a front surface 6 and a top surface 8.
- the body portion 5 is manufactured from a resilient material, such as foam, which provides sufficient firmness to support a person's body in a partially reclining position. Such resilient materials must yield under force or pressure and return to its original shape when the force is removed.
- the base portion 3 is padded with a thin layer of foam and is moreover provided with at least one opening 10, intended to support the tailbone of a person using the exercise apparatus.
- Figure 2 shows an apparatus according to figure 1, which is provided with reinforced parts 12 that locally provide for a stronger support of the human body.
- the body portion 5 is laterally reinforced.
- Such reinforcement provides for a better support of the lumbar region of the human body.
- the reinforcement can be brought about by locally providing a foam with an increased hardness or firmness compared to the rest of the foam of the body portion 5.
- Another option is to provide parts of the body portion 5 with springs.
- a person can sit on the base portion 3 with the lower bach against the front face 6 of the body portion 5, as shown in figure 3. Then said person alternately leans backward as shown in phantom and rolls forward, pulling forward with the abdominal muscles to a somewhat upright position as shown in solid lines in figure 3.
- the base portion 3 as well as the body portion 5 provide effective support for the human body during the exercise. In this way the workout procedure does not put any load on parts of the human body, other than the muscle group(s) to be trained.
- the exercise apparatus according to the present invention can not only be used for exercises of the abdominal area, but also for exercises of other muscle groups.
