- the frame of the apparatus consists of a frame plate 13 with box-like parts 14 facing towards the elevator rope 4 fitted to each end of it, the shaft 3 being fitted between the box-like parts, so that the frame part can be fixed to the upper end of the vertical member 1 of the car frame for testing.
- the stopper 12 comprises a fixing plate 15 by which the stopper can be attached e.g. with screws to the back of the guide rail 11, and an arrester catch 16 bent toward the testing apparatus and comprising a base part oriented in the direction of the lever and a catch part parallel to the fixing plate 15, the lever 10 hitting the catch part when the elevator car is moving.
- the apparatus is used for testing as follows:
- One of the elevator ropes 4 which is already held fast in the elevator car by a spring-loaded rope fixture, is connected to the elevator car by means of the testing apparatus.
- the rope being attached to the elevator car by different parts of it both via the rope fixture and via the testing apparatus, is released from the hoisting drum or from its anchorage immovable relative to the elevator shaft.
- the rope end is secured but leaving the rope slack.
- the rope will not support the elevator car, but because the testing apparatus exerts a tightening force on the rope, the rope fixture on the elevator car will still feel that the rope is tensioned.
- the testing apparatus By means of the testing apparatus, a sufficient force is maintained in the rope fixture of this particular rope to maintain a sufficient load on the spring in the rope fixture to prevent activation of the safety gear even when the rope is loosened so that it does not carry the weight of the elevator car.
- the apparatus is used to activate the safety gear by releasing the load applied to the rope fixture by the testing apparatus, the safety gear being activated by the motive force released by the removal of the load.
- the release is effected by driving the elevator car in the down direction and allowing the trigger 10 to hit the stopper 12. This removes the tension applied by the cam 6 to the rope 4 and, via the rope, to the rope fixture in the elevator car.
- the slack rope can now follow the spring load of the rope fixture and therefore activates the safety gear.
- the activation is done at a predetermined height in the elevator shaft. Having four freely selectable positions along the shaft 3 corresponding to the rope 4, the apparatus is designed to function regardless of which one of the ropes has been loosened to trigger the safety gear.
- the triggering mechanism is mounted directly on the top part of the vertical member 1 of the car frame, and the tightening element 5 is attached to the one 4 of the ropes which is to be used in the testing.
- the cam 6 can be moved to different positions along the shaft 3, so the rope to be used can be freely selected.
- the elevator is driven from a higher floor towards the floor to be used for the testing.
- the lever 10 acting as a trigger hits the triggering stopper 12, which is mounted at a predetermined height relative to the top of the frame of the elevator car unit before the car reaches the landing level, the lever 10 will turn up as depicted with a broken line in Fig. 1a, permitting the cam 6 to turn to a horizontal position, which causes the rope 4 to slacken as illustrated by Fig. 2.
- the safety gear function of the elevator car aroused by rope slackness, now detects the slack rope and activates the safety gear if the latter functions correctly.
- the rope tension exerted by the cam 6 against the rope fixture in the elevator car preferably exceeds the normal tension, because in this case the rope can be tensioned again after the test, making it easier to fix the loosened rope again to its anchorage in the elevator shaft.
- Fig. 3 presents a simplified diagram representing a hydraulic elevator with rope suspension.
- the elevator car 21 is suspended by means of elevator ropes 4.
- the elevator ropes 4 are attached to the elevator car 21 via springs 24 in the rope fixture 23 on the car.
- the other ends of the ropes 4 are fixed to an anchorage 27 immovable relative to the elevator shaft.
- the hydraulic cylinder 22, mounted in the elevator shaft, carries the ropes by means of a diverting pulley 28 moved by the cylinder.
- the elevator car is provided with a safety gear 26, which is activated by a lever arrangement 25 if the rope 4 becomes slack, in which case the release of the compression of spring 24 or a spring parallel with it will act upon the lever arrangement.
