  • Booklets of this kind can be produced by stacking sheets, stapling along a central line and folding along this same central line.   • the booklet has a tendency to reopen, mainly because of the elasticity of the paper fibers. This tendency of the booklet to reopen is troublesome for the subsequent stages such as the trimming and especially the stacking of the booklets for their packaging.
  • the booklet is passed between one or more pairs of rollers, in order to compress or crush the fold. In this way, we manage to reduce, but not eliminate, the tendency of the booklet to reopen.
  • the present invention provides a device for finishing the fold of booklets which is capable of eliminating practically any tendency of the booklet to reopen.

  • the spacing between the pairs of rollers is such that a booklet engaged in the roller passage slot downstream is still engaged in the passage slot of the upstream rollers.
  • the upstream rollers oppose the traction, due to the curvature of the bundle, exerted by the downstream rollers on the sheets of paper when the fold is engaged between them.
  • the biasing force towards each other of the downstream rollers is preferably significantly greater than that of the upstream rollers when the booklet is engaged in the slot of passage of the downstream rollers.
  • common biasing means are provided for the two pairs of rollers, the action of which is selectively applied to one or the other of these.

  • the bundle is deformed along the path of the strap 20, with a convex curvature on the side of the strap and a concave curvature on the side of the roller 12a. By this curvature, the paper fibers are exposed to a tensile force on the side of the belt 20.
  • the deflection of the bundle causes shearing forces in the fold area. The combined action of these stresses causes most of the paper fibers to break in the fold area of the bundle 14. As a result, the booklet leaving the device no longer has a tendency to reopen.
  • the spacing between the pairs of rollers 10, 12 is preferably small enough so that the bundle 14, when its fold is engaged between the belt 20 and the roller 12a, is still engaged in the passage slot between the belt 20 and the roller 10a.
  • the bundle 14 takes a curved shape due to its deflection in contact with the roller 12a, it tends to advance more rapidly on the convex side of the curvature.
  • this rear part of the bundle cannot follow the faster advancement of the convex side of the curvature, and the traction exerted on the fibers of the paper is therefore increased. To ensure this effect, it is important that the drive of the rollers 10b and 12b is synchronous.
  • the belt 20 is replaced by a guide plate 30.
  • the rollers 10a, 10b and 12a, 12b are all coupled as shown schematically in Figure 3, to a drive motor 16, via a transmission chain 32.
  • the lower rollers 10b, 12b have their axes adjustable in height in an eccentric support 34 and 36, respectively.
