- the present invention relates to a device for finishing the fold of booklets composed of sheets stacked and folded along a central line.
- Booklets of this kind can be produced by stacking sheets, stapling along a central line and folding along this same central line. Folding is carried out by introducing, using a blade, the bundle of leaves into the slot defined between two opposite rollers which rotate so as to evacuate the folded booklet.
- the booklet has a tendency to reopen, mainly because of the elasticity of the paper fibers. This tendency of the booklet to reopen is troublesome for the subsequent stages such as the trimming and especially the stacking of the booklets for their packaging.
- the booklet is passed between one or more pairs of rollers, in order to compress or crush the fold. In this way, we manage to reduce, but not eliminate, the tendency of the booklet to reopen.
- the present invention provides a device for finishing the fold of booklets which is capable of eliminating practically any tendency of the booklet to reopen.
- This device comprises at least one pair of parallel and opposite rollers defining between them a slot for the passage of a booklet, at least one of said rollers being driven in rotation and the rollers being biased towards each other; according to the invention, the normal on the plane defined by the axes of said pair of rollers is inclined relative to the direction of advancement of the booklets, and a deflection element of the booklet is arranged upstream of said passage slot for forcibly deflecting the path of the booklet in the direction of said passage slot from said direction of advance.
- the forced deflection of the bundle of sheets has the effect of bending it and exerting a tensile force on the paper fibers on the convex side of the curved bundle.
- the pair of rollers is preferably preceded by another pair of parallel and opposite rollers defining between them a slot for passage of a booklet, at least one of said rollers being driven in rotation and the rollers being biased towards each other, the plane defined by the axes of said pair of rollers being normal to the direction of advancement of the booklets.
- the spacing between the pairs of rollers is such that a booklet engaged in the roller passage slot downstream is still engaged in the passage slot of the upstream rollers.
- the upstream rollers oppose the traction, due to the curvature of the bundle, exerted by the downstream rollers on the sheets of paper when the fold is engaged between them.
- the biasing force towards each other of the downstream rollers is preferably significantly greater than that of the upstream rollers when the booklet is engaged in the slot of passage of the downstream rollers.
- common biasing means are provided for the two pairs of rollers, the action of which is selectively applied to one or the other of these.
- These means advantageously consist of two elements for transmitting a bearing force on the axis of one of the rollers of each pair, respectively, the bearing force being applied directly to that of the transmission elements which is associated with the upstream rollers and indirectly, by contact between these transmission elements, to that of the transmission elements which is associated with the downstream rollers.
- the transmission elements consist of pivoting levers having free ends in abutment against one another and intermediate parts bearing on the axis of the associated roller.
- the device for finishing the booklet fold comprises two pairs of rollers 10, 12, mounted in a frame (not shown), in succession along a path for the passage of a bundle 14 of sheets folded along a central line.
- the lower rollers 10b, 12b are each mounted for rotation about a fixed axis and rotated by a motor 16, by means of a belt 18.
- An endless belt 20 is dragged around the rollers 10b, 12b and around a tension roller 22.
- the upper rollers 10a, 12a are mounted with free rotation and vertical displacement; they are biased towards the lower rollers 10b, 12b and in contact with the belt 20 by an associated spring 24, 26, respectively.
- the upper rollers 10a, 12a are rotated indirectly by frictional contact with the belt 20, but their rotation is synchronized by a synchronization belt 28.
- the upper roller 12a is offset from the roller lower 12b towards the first pair 10 of rollers; the normal to the plane defined by the axes of the rollers 12a, 12b is therefore inclined relative to the direction of advance of the bundle 14.
- the belt 20 undergoes a deflection in contact with the roller 12a.
- the folded bundle 14 is deposited on the belt 20 in front of the first pair 10 of rollers, the fold forming the front edge of the bundle.

- the bundle is deformed along the path of the strap 20, with a convex curvature on the side of the strap and a concave curvature on the side of the roller 12a. By this curvature, the paper fibers are exposed to a tensile force on the side of the belt 20.
- the deflection of the bundle causes shearing forces in the fold area. The combined action of these stresses causes most of the paper fibers to break in the fold area of the bundle 14. As a result, the booklet leaving the device no longer has a tendency to reopen.
- the spacing between the pairs of rollers 10, 12 is preferably small enough so that the bundle 14, when its fold is engaged between the belt 20 and the roller 12a, is still engaged in the passage slot between the belt 20 and the roller 10a.
- the bundle 14 takes a curved shape due to its deflection in contact with the roller 12a, it tends to advance more rapidly on the convex side of the curvature.
- this rear part of the bundle cannot follow the faster advancement of the convex side of the curvature, and the traction exerted on the fibers of the paper is therefore increased. To ensure this effect, it is important that the drive of the rollers 10b and 12b is synchronous.
- the belt 20 is replaced by a guide plate 30.
- the rollers 10a, 10b and 12a, 12b are all coupled as shown schematically in Figure 3, to a drive motor 16, via a transmission chain 32.
- the lower rollers 10b, 12b have their axes adjustable in height in an eccentric support 34 and 36, respectively.
- the rotation of these eccentric supports 34, 36 is controlled manually by a flywheel not shown, to modify the spacing of the rollers as a function of the thickness of the booklets.
- the rollers 10a, 12a are mounted to travel in pivoting arms 38, 40, respectively.
- the biasing of the rollers 10a, 12a towards the rollers 10b, 12b is ensured by a common mechanism whose action is selectively applied to the roller 10a and then to the roller 12a.
- a pivoting lever 42 is supported on the axis of the roller 10a, and a similar pivoting lever 44 is supported on the axis of the roller 12a.
- the free ends of the levers 42, 44 are superimposed and have aligned bores through which a pull rod 46 passes.
- the pull rod 46 carries a pack of spring disks 48 which rests on one side on an element d 'support 50 and, on the other side, on a bolt 52 screwed onto the free end of the pull rod 46.
- the pack of spring disks 48 therefore exerts a pull force on the rod 46, the head of which presses on the free end of the lever 42 which, in turn, pushes on the free end of the lever 44.
- the stressing force of the rollers 10a, 12a depends on the ratio between the length of the lever 42 or 44 and the distance between the pivot point of each lever and its bearing area on the 'axis of the respective roller. This ratio can be varied to obtain different loading forces for the pairs of rollers 10, 12, despite the use of a common mechanism.
