Abstract

The safety system uses respective global positioning system receivers (2, 12) associated with each train or potential obstacle and communicating with radio stations (3, 13), for cyclic interrogation of the position information provided by the receivers. The radio stations are coupled to evaluation circuits (4, 14) determining the spacing of each indicated position from a reference point, to activate a warning signal, or initiate a safety function, when the spacing drops below a given safety distance.

Description

The invention relates to an arrangement for securing railway lines against collisions of trains with other trains or with other obstacles according to the preamble of claim 1.

To increase the safety of rail routes, it is necessary to take additional safety precautions in addition to the existing safety devices at particularly vulnerable points, for example level crossings or train stations, which can have an effect on the entire route.

Particular attention is paid to collision monitoring, since collisions of trains with other trains or with other obstacles are usually associated with personal injury and high property damage.
Securing construction crews on railway lines in particular is always a problem, since the known safety precautions due to human error often fail.

For these reasons, ways of realizing automatic collision monitoring are being sought when securing railway lines.

From the German laid-open specification DE-A 39 15 466 a method for recording and carrying out a regulated radio operation for preventing collisions between vehicles is known, in which the involved vehicles reveal themselves by repeatedly sending signals. The distance of the vehicles from one another is determined by measuring the reception field strength of the signal emitted by a preceding vehicle in the following vehicle, or location data is transmitted from the preceding vehicle, which are compared with one's own.
The top speed of the following vehicle is determined by comparing the distance between the vehicles and the speeds.

A system for the display and control of moving objects is known from European published patent application EP-A 0 509 775. In this system, the moving objects contain a GPS receiver (Global Positioning System - receiver), with the help of which they determine their location. They also contain a transmitter with which the location data are transmitted to a central control. In this central control, the position data of the individual moving objects are processed and displayed on a display unit together with a map of the area in question.

The disadvantage of the known arrangements is in particular that the information is only passed on in one direction, so that there is no efficient prevention of collisions.

The object of the invention is therefore to provide an arrangement in which a collision on railway lines can be reliably prevented.

This object is achieved on the basis of the features of the preamble of claim 1 by the characterizing features of claim 1. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims.

According to the invention, the trains or potential obstacles are equipped with GPS receivers, each of which is connected to a radio station. The radio stations cyclically send out location information, which is obtained from the GPS signal, and identification signals. The identification signals contain information about the type of transmission station, for example fast train, local train or construction crew. The identification signal can also contain information about the speed of the train, the anticipated braking distance or the track used, etc.

Furthermore, the radio stations are connected to evaluation units which, when receiving the location information of another radio station, show the distance to their own Determine your location and, if the distance falls below a specified minimum, issue a warning signal and / or call up a warning strategy automatically.

The warning signal can be an acoustic or visual warning display. The warning strategy can consist, for example, of lowering the speed of the train and simultaneously actuating an optical or acoustic warning.

The arrangement according to the invention has the advantage that the individual radio stations are connected bidirectionally to one another, so that all the stations involved receive a danger message. In an arrangement according to the invention, for example, a construction crew is warned of an approaching train by an acoustic signal, and at the same time a reference is made to the construction crew on the train. Another advantage of the invention is that both the location determination of the individual stations, the sending and receiving of the location information and the output of warning signals or the initiation of a warning strategy is carried out automatically, and errors due to human error are largely excluded.

According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the minimum distance, below which an alarm signal is output, is specified as a function of the transmitted identification signals. For example, this distance can be less if a train approaches a stationary obstacle than if two trains approach each other on the same track.

Another advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the radio stations transmit on a single frequency. In this way it is achieved that the transmitter and receiver of the overall arrangement need not be designed to be tunable to several frequencies.

In order to ensure that not several radio stations transmit in a reception area at the same time, it is advantageous to provide transmission / reception cycles which at least largely exclude an overlap of the transmission times. An overlap of the transmission times can also be prevented in that the radio stations are designed in such a way that a message cannot be sent when a radio message arrives. A field strength detection circuit can be used, for example, to determine whether a radio message is being received.

If a station is assigned to a construction team, for example, it is advantageous to provide further radio devices which are carried by the individual members of a construction team and which can receive a warning signal output by the station.

Furthermore, it has proven to be advantageous to design the individual radio stations in such a way that status messages can be sent which can be received by the other stations. These status messages can indicate, for example, that a construction crew has left the tracks, so it is not necessary to reduce the speed of an approaching train.

According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, it is provided that electronic route transmitters are provided on route sections on which no GPS signals can be received, which enable the location of a station to be calculated even without a GPS signal. In this way, location determinations can also be made in tunnels in which GPS signals cannot be received, so that radio stations located there can also transmit location data.

The current position can also be determined in such a way that position sensors are included in the evaluation unit, for example, which determine the current location data on the basis of the last GPS position determined. For example, the speed of the train can be used to determine the current location data. To increase the accuracy, changes in direction can, for example, be recorded and entered using a compass and thus be included in the determination of the current location.

At least one interface is also provided for entering data, in particular identification data, via an external keyboard, a computer or the like.

The invention is described below with reference to the figure.
This figure shows an arrangement with two stations 1 and 10. The individual stations consist of a GPS receiver 2, 12, which is connected to a radio station 3, 13. The radio station is designed to send and receive messages.

Stations 1 and 10 each further contain an evaluation unit 4, 14, which is connected to a warning signal generator 5, 15.

The station radios 16, 17 and 18 are also assigned, which are designed to receive messages from the radio station 13.

The GPS receivers 2, 12 receive data via antennas, not shown in the figure, with which they can determine the location in a known manner with relatively high accuracy. This position data is sent to the evaluation unit 4, 14 and the radio station 3, 13. The radio station 3, 13 sends the location information obtained in the GPS receiver 2, 12 to the other radio stations at predetermined cyclical intervals and also receives the signals which are transmitted cyclically by other radio stations and are passed on to the evaluation unit 4, 14.
In the evaluation unit 4, 14, the received location data of other stations are compared with their own and the distance from the other station or stations is determined. If this distance falls below a predetermined limit value, a warning signal is issued or a warning strategy is initiated, which can be specified differently from station to station.
For example, a station that is arranged in a train can provide in its warning strategy that the train driver is made aware of the situation by an acoustic warning signal and that at the same time the speed of the train is reduced.

If the station is assigned to a construction team, an acoustic warning signal can also be output and an additional warning message can be automatically sent to the various handheld radios 16, 17, 18. In this way, each member of a construction team can be made aware of the danger.

In the event that the radio station is designed in such a way that status messages can be sent and received, a predetermined status message can, for example, be assigned to a specific operating button. For example, after being warned of an approaching train and causing the danger zone to be cleared, the site manager can send a status message stating that the tracks are clear. A warning strategy that has already been initiated can then be aborted on the receiving train or it is not initiated at all.
