Abstract

A train protection system comprises a GPS device and an onboard processing unit which is provided with the position and status of the signals on the route of the train. These are updated from a central station and compared to the train's position identified by the GPS. If the train passes a danger signal it is brought to a halt. The system may also be used to apply speed limits to the train. A warning may also be given on approach to the signal.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Train Protection System This invention relates to a form of automatic train protection. These systems provide for the automatic stopping of a moving train which has passed a danger signal and/or provide a warning to the train crew who then manually stop the train Train protection systems have been in demand for decades, and are currently in use on many tracks with varying degrees of success The difficulty with existing systems is that they take too long to implement and therefore much of the railway network will remain without protection for a number of years.
This invention allows for rapid low cost installation and software development and may be used as an interim before common European standards are developed and implemented It also enables more traffic to be channelled through track bottlenecks at greater speed in safety.
Accordingly this invention provides for an on board processing unit, or computer and Global Position Unit (GPS) whereby the exact position of the train is known to the on board device, as is the position and current status of signals and other traffic on a particular route, and by linking the on board device to the engine control system the train can be automatically brought to a halt at or passed a danger signal.
One embodiment of the invention is described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which.Figure I shows the schematic arrangement of the railway vehicle, and Figure 2 shows a simplified decision flow diagram Before the journey can begin, the particular route is selected in the on board device 6 This could be manually by the driver or via an external signal from the signal control centre via a GSM unit 3 or other radio device. The route information includes the position of all signals relevant to the journey. The processor 4 now receives status information of individual signals along the route and this information is retransmitted
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
by the unit to the control centre as a handshake, to ensure that the information has been received correctly This is a continuous process.
The GPS unit 5 establishes the current position of the train on its prepared route and this information is compared with the signal positional data and the signal status. At the same time the positional data can be transmitted via a GSM unit or similar radio device for use by the signal control centre.
On approaching a signal set at danger the on board device will detect that the upcoming signal is at danger, and either warn the driver to slow, or automatically cause the train to slow and eventually halt at the danger signal by operating the brake controller I and/or the speed controller 2

Claims (5)

  1. Claims 1. A train protection system using an on board processing unit, or computer and Global Position Unit (GPS) whereby the exact position of the train is known to the on board device, as is the position and current status of signals and other traffic on a particular route, and by linking the on board device to the engine control system the train can be automatically brought to a halt at or passed a danger signal.
  2. 2. As stated in Claim 1 with the addition of automatic speed control based on traffic ahead and to the rear of the train taking into account safe separation, differential train speeds, timetables and trains scheduled to cross ahead.
  3. 3. As stated in Claim 1 or Claim 2 but using virtual signal positions which can be programmed into the on board unit to control temporary track or other engineering works and cater for diverted trains.
  4. 4. As stated in Claim 1 but with the option of an audible warning on approaching a danger signal.
  5. 5. As stated in Claim 3 interim virtual signals placed at intervals between fixed installations.
