Definitions

  • connection element comprising an insulating bridge having a U-shaped section, said bridge having a central region and two lateral branches, as well as bent electrical contact elements having front contact regions housed in openings in the central region of the trigger guard, as well as elbow regions and rear contact regions, and a retention pin, in particular of the hot-deformable type for fixing the connection element on a flat support.
  • a contact element of the aforementioned type is marketed under the brand "METRAL" by DU PONT. It comprises a trigger guard having a relatively massive central region which carries a hot-deformable pin. Mechanical rigidity is ensured by the fact that an edge of the central region of the trigger guard as well as in the vicinity thereof, the lower edge of one of the branches bear against an edge of the printed circuit. This allows a nominal spacing of 14mm. between the lower edge of the branch and the last of the four contact rows.
  • Such an assembly has the disadvantage that, during a wave soldering operation, said branch of the trigger guard is not well protected due to the fact that it comes into contact with the edge of the printed circuit.
  • the present invention relates to a connection element which does not have the aforementioned drawback.
  • connection element of the aforementioned type characterized in that it comprises a rear insulating body surrounding the electrical contact elements on at least one zone situated between said front contact region and said elbow zone, and in that that said retention pin is integral with an edge of said rear insulating body.
  • This rear insulating body makes it possible to stiffen the electrical contact elements, and like the retention pin which can be, for example, a hot deformable pin or a force insertable pin, is no longer carried by the trigger guard, but by the rear insulating body, the trigger guard can be arranged differently from the printed circuit. It is also possible to use standard bridges.
  • said edge of the rear insulating body is substantially aligned with an outer edge of a branch of the trigger guard.
  • a connection assembly can then be implemented by mounting the bridge so that said outer edge of the branch bears on an upper face of a flat support such as a printed circuit board.
  • the assembly of the assembly is rigid, the trigger guard is located on the face opposite to that which is subjected to wave soldering and in addition it is possible to reduce the aforementioned nominal spacing, p. ex. up to 10mm. about.
  • the edge of the rear insulating body is set back relative to an external edge of a branch of the trigger guard.
  • a connection assembly can then be implemented so that the trigger guard is spaced from an outer edge of the flat support. It is thus possible to avoid wetting the trigger guard by a solder wave, since the trigger guard is entirely located outside the perimeter of the printed circuit. This can make it possible to maintain a said nominal spacing of 14 mm.
  • a connector sold under the brand METRAL has a rear part having elbow connection elements. These connection elements each have a termination 1 welded to the underside 18 of a printed circuit board 8, a straight region connecting the termination 1 to an elbow region 6 and another straight region 5 extending from the elbow 6 up to crossing a central region 2 of a trigger guard 10 in the shape of a "U", the rectilinear region 9 extending forwards by male terminations 9 disposed between the two lateral branches 3 and 4 of trigger guard 10.
  • a lateral face of the central region adjoining the branch 3 comes to bear against an upper face 17 of the printed circuit 8, and this face carries a hot-deformable pin 11 by which it is mechanically secured to the printed circuit 8 by the lower face 18 of the latter in the vicinity of its edge 19.
  • the rear face 15 of the lateral branch 3 also bears against the edge 19 of the printed circuit 8, and absorbs the rotational forces applied to the trigger guard 10.
  • a connector 20 has a female front part 12, a cable support 14 and a cable 16.
  • the dimension L1 is equal to 14 mm. This rating results from several factors: the central region 2 must be thick enough to ensure the mechanical rigidity of the assembly, and the pin 11 must be sufficiently distant from the edge 15 of the branch 3 to allow the passage of a deforming tool to hot pawn 11. It will be noted with regard to this last point that the external planar face of the branch 3 projects beyond the lower face 18 of the printed circuit 8.
  • a connector according to the invention has, at the rear part, an insulating body 40 provided with longitudinal openings 47 extending towards the rear by a constricted zone 42 and opening onto a face 43, which is here inclined to substantially 45 °.
  • the contact elements have a front termination, 49 constituted by a male pin, housed between the lateral branches 23 and 24 of a trigger guard 30 in the shape of a "U" whose central part 22 has openings crossed at 38 with force assembly by the terminations 49 which extend rearwards through a rectilinear zone 25 disposed in an opening 47, and behind the constricted zone 42 which holds it, by an elbow region 26, then another rectilinear zone 27 which is ends with a contact region (or pin) 21 inserted by force ("press-fit") in openings of a printed circuit 28.
  • the insulating block 41 has an extension 44 having a face 45 which comes to bear on the face upper 29 of the printed circuit 28 and which carries a hot deformable pin 31 which makes it possible to mechanically fix the block 41 to the printed circuit 28.
  • the lateral branch 23 may have a face 46, for example situated, as shown, at its extr miter, and which comes to bear on the upper face 29 of the printed circuit 28.
  • the insulating block 40 contributes to the mechanical rigidity of the part of the connector located at the rear of the trigger guard 30. Therefore, the trigger guard 30 used can be a standard trigger guard.
  • the trigger guard 30 is mounted on the upper face 29 of the printed circuit 28, it is fully protected during the wave soldering operation. Finally, there is no longer any need to provide as much tool clearance as in the prior art.
  • the dimension L2 between the base of the trigger guard 30 and the rear face 39 of the insulating body 40 can be of the order of 10 mm. instead of 14 mm.
  • the pin 31 owing to its arrangement on the insulating body 40 which holds the elements (25, 26, 27, 21), participates in guiding the pins 21 during the force insertion of these into the PCB holes 28.
  • connection between the trigger guard 30 and the rear insulation 40 is reinforced by the fact that the terminations 38 insertable by force of the pins 49 participate in the embedding effort between the extensions 37 of the insulation 40 and 36 of the trigger guard 30.
  • the embodiment of Figure 3 implements a bridge 30 which may be identical to that of Figure 2.
  • the connector has a rear insulating body 50 without extension such as 44.
  • the rear insulator 50 carries on its face 54 a hot-deformable pin 55 which allows it to be secured to a printed circuit 48.
  • the contact elements have male pins 59 housed between the lateral branches 23 and 24, which are force-fitted at 68 and which extend towards the rear by rectilinear zones 65 longer than the zones 25 of FIG. 2, then of the elbows 66 and finally other rectilinear zones 67 shorter than the zones 27 of FIG. 2.
  • the trigger guard 30 and the rear insulation 50 can be recessed at 36 for the trigger guard 30 and at 62 for the rear insulation 50.
  • the trigger guard 30 is spaced from the edge 63 of the printed circuit 48. It is therefore possible to perform a wave soldering operation without risking wetting the lateral branch 23 of the trigger guard 30. It will be recalled that, during such an operation, the solder wave must be able to lick the lateral edges of the printed circuit 48
  • FIGS. 2 and 3 Another advantage of the embodiments of FIGS. 2 and 3 is that the rear insulation, respectively 40 and 50, serves as a support piece for the pins 21 and 61 respectively, when they are inserted into the holes in the printed circuit, respectively 28 and 48.
  • the male pins 49 and 59 can be replaced by female pins.
  • the insulating body 40 or 50 has a cylindrical pin designated by the general reference 130 and having a cylindrical region 131, at least one housing 133 and one end 132 of frustoconical shape.
  • the cylindrical pin 130 is integral with the insulating body 40 or 50 and is manufactured in a similar manner to a hot deformable pin.
  • a piece 120 of metal has a hollow cylindrical body 124 having a notch 126 and at least one elastic arm 122 intended to snap into the housing 133.
  • the piece 120 has a base end 125 coming into abutment lower than the base of the pin 130, and an upper end 129 which is extended by elastic arms 123, here three in number distributed at 120 °, but could for example be four in number distributed at 90 °.
  • the elastic arm 123 has a proximal region 127 extending outward, and a distal region 123 'forming an elbow with the region 127, the distal region 123' being directed inward.
  • the proximal region 127 acts as a snap stopper to hold in place the printed circuit 28 or 48 in abutment against an upper face of the insulating body 40 or 50.
  • the cylindrical body 120 is first introduced until the tongues 122 snap into the housings 133. Then the opening (or openings) 121 of the printed circuit 40 or 50 is presented at the distal end 123 'of the elastic arm 123.
  • the elastic arms 123 are pushed inwards, which allows the introduction of the printed circuit 40 or 50 until it abuts against the face of the insulating body 40 or 50 in a position in which a phenomenon of latching of the proximal end 127 occurs by elastic deployment of the arms 123 towards the outside.
  • the diameter of the pin 130 can be of the order of 1mm.
  • the part 120 can be removed by rotating it around the axis of the hollow cylinder 124 so as to release the elastic arm (s) 122 from the housing (s) 133.
