Definitions

  • the field of the present invention is that of telescoped type munitions.
  • These munitions generally include a case consisting of a cylindrical envelope, carrying at each end a plug, and inside which are disposed a projectile and a propellant charge.
  • the projectile is entirely inside the case and it is necessary to provide means ensuring its axial and radial retention relative to the casing of the case.
  • the patent FR2679991 describes various means allowing the projectile to be held axially relative to the envelope.
  • These means may include a rear stop carried by an igniter and a front stop constituted by an elastic ring disposed in a groove in the front plug.
  • the document FR2679991 describes other holding means which combine an abutment surface provided on the front plug and an elastic ring disposed in a groove in the same plug.
  • such rings generally have a slot allowing them to be placed in a groove and this slot constitutes an area of asymmetry of the ring.
  • the rupture of the ring is not symmetrical due to the presence of the slot. This results in a shock to the projectile, a shock which is not oriented in an axial direction thereof. Such a shock disturbs the placement in the barrel of the weapon and the subsequent ballistic behavior of the projectile.
  • It is the object of the invention to propose a telescoped ammunition comprising means for axially holding the projectile which allow it to be held effectively while ensuring its smooth release during the firing.
  • the subject of the invention is a munition of the telescoped type and comprising a case, consisting of a cylindrical envelope carrying at each end a plug, and inside which are disposed a projectile and a propellant charge, ammunition comprising means ensuring the axial retention of the projectile relative to the casing, ammunition characterized in that the axial retention means consist of a cap comprising a central cylindrical part integral with a front part of the projectile and carrying an annular flange which is made integral of the front plug by fixing means.
  • the annular flange ensures the closure of the front of the envelope.
  • the fixing means consist of a weld of the flange on the front plug.
  • the front plug carries a metal reinforcement ring and the fixing means are formed by pinching the flange between the ring and the front plug.
  • the central cylindrical part of the cap has axial slots regularly distributed angularly as well as nozzles arranged at one end and intended to be housed in a groove of the projectile so as to ensure the connection between cap and projectile .
  • the annular flange carries an initiation of annular rupture.
  • This breaking point may be a circular thinning of the collar, thinning whose diameter is substantially equal to that of the cylindrical central part of the cap.
  • the cap can be made integral with a front part of the shoe at the level of the bore.
  • the nose may also include a bore at the level of which the cap will be made integral.
  • FIG. 1 represents in axial section a munition according to the invention in which the projectile is of the under-calibrated type
  • FIGS. 2a and 2b show in two orthogonal views the cap for holding the projectile, FIG. 2b being a section along the plane AA of FIG. 2a,
  • FIG. 3 represents an alternative embodiment of this munition
  • FIG. 4 represents in axial section another munition according to the invention in which the projectile is of caliber
  • FIGS. 5a and 5b show in two orthogonal views the cap for holding the projectile, FIG. 5b being a section along the plane BB of FIG. 5a,
  • FIG. 6 represents an alternative embodiment of this munition
  • FIG. 7 represents a third embodiment of a munition according to the invention
  • FIGS. 8a and 8b show in two orthogonal views the cap for holding the projectile, FIG. 8b being a section along the plane CC of FIG. 8a.
  • a munition 1 according to the invention comprises a case, consisting of a cylindrical envelope 2 closed by a front plug 3a and a rear plug 3b.
  • the caps are made of plastic and have metal reinforcements.
  • the front plug 3a carries a reinforcement ring 4a and the rear plug 3b carries a reinforcement plate 4b.
  • the ring 4a has an annular fold 5 which hangs by elastic deformation on a peripheral groove 6 arranged on the plug 3a.
  • the plate 4b is similarly fixed to the rear plug 3b. It carries an igniter 7 of the type described in patent FR2679994.
  • the projectile 8 comprises a sub-calibrated bar 9 disposed in a tapped bore 10 of a shoe 11 of the caliber.
  • the shoe 11 comprises several segments intended to hold the bar during the firing then to release it at the exit of the barrel of the weapon.
  • the bar carries a thread which allows it to be secured to the shoe at the bore 10.
  • the bar 9 carries at its rear part a tail
  • the shoe carries at its front part a belt 14 which is adjusted in an axial bore 15 of the front plug 3a.
  • the belt is intended to ensure the seal between the projectile and the barrel of the weapon.
  • the cap 16 is shown in detail in Figures 2a and 2b. It comprises a cylindrical central part 17 whose diameter is substantially equal to that of the bore 10.
  • This central part carries a thread which allows the cap 16 and the projectile shoe to be secured at the bore 10. It has an internal recess 18 which can receive the end of the bar 9.
  • the cap also includes an annular flange 19 which is intended to be made integral with the plug 3a by fixing means.
  • the fixing means are formed by pinching the flange 19 between the ring 4a and the front plug 3a.
  • the part of the collar 19 which is pinched is a thinned rim 20 which also constitutes a starting point for rupture of the collar 19.
  • the rim 20 breaks when the ammunition is fired without causing a non-axial impact on the projectile.
  • the flange 19 also plays the role of a cover for the ammunition and makes it possible to prevent outside moisture from penetrating inside the case.
  • the cap alone ensures the axial retention of the projectile relative to the front plug 3a, it is therefore not necessary to provide a shoulder on the plug 3a or a rear stop for the projectile.
  • Such an arrangement also has the advantage of ensuring the axial immobilization of the projectile without maintaining the material of the belt 14 in compression against the plug 3a. This improves the resistance over time of the ammunition.
  • the ammunition is assembled as follows:
  • the plug 3a and the casing 2 are made integral, for example by means of radial pins,
  • the plug 3b and the casing 2 are made integral, for example by means of radial pins.
  • FIG. 3 shows the detail of the front part of a munition produced according to such a variant.
  • the front plug 3a has a countersink 29 in which the flange 19 of the cover 16 is housed.
  • the fixing of this cap on the front plug 3a is carried out by ultrasonic welding at the counterbore 29.
  • the fixing of the cap on the projectile 8 is carried out by screwing the threaded cylindrical part 17 in the bore 10 of the shoe .
  • FIG 4 shows another munition according to the invention in which the projectile 8 is of the caliber of the weapon.
  • the means for radially holding this projectile 8 relative to the casing 2 of the ammunition comprises a nose 21, made of plastic, and which has an internal profile corresponding to the external profile of a warhead 22 of the projectile 8.
  • the internal profile of the nose ends with a cylindrical bore 23.
  • the nose 21 is made integral with the projectile 8 by a flange 24 which penetrates elastically into a groove 25 arranged on the projectile.
  • the nose 21 has holes 26 with axes parallel to the axis of the projectile and regularly distributed angularly. These holes have the function of weakening the nose and allowing its separation from the projectile at the outlet of the barrel of the weapon by the action of centrifugal force.
  • the nose 21 has a cylindrical external profile 27 which allows its adjustment in the front plug 3a.
  • a wedge 28 which is fixed to the rear part of the projectile and which also ensures guiding of the latter relative to the casing 2.
  • a cap 16 which is made integral with the projectile 8 at the level of the nose 21.
  • the cap 16 is shown in detail in Figures 5a and 5b.
  • the cap 16 has a cylindrical central part 17, of diameter equal to that of the bore 23, and on which a thread is arranged. The latter is screwed onto a thread carried by the bore 23 of the nose 21.
  • the cap 16 also includes an annular collar 19 which is intended to be made integral with the plug 3a by fixing means.
  • the fixing means are formed by pinching the flange 19 between the ring 4a and the front plug 3a.
  • the part of the collar 19 which is pinched is a thinned rim 20 which also constitutes a starting point for rupture of the collar 19. Due to its symmetry with respect to the axis of the ammunition, the flange breaks when the ammunition is fired without causing a non-axial impact on the projectile.
  • the mounting of this ammunition is carried out in the same way as that of the ammunition described above with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2.
  • FIG. 6 shows the detail of the front part of a munition produced according to this variant.
  • the front plug 3a has a countersink 29 in which the flange 19 of the cover 16 is housed.
  • the fixing of this cap on the front plug 3a is carried out by ultrasonic welding at the counterbore 29.
  • the fixing of the cap on the projectile 8 is carried out by screwing the threaded cylindrical part 17 of the cap into the bore 23 of the nose 21.
  • FIG. 7 represents a munition according to a third embodiment of the invention.
  • the projectile 8 comprises a sub-calibrated bar 9 disposed in a tapped bore 10 of a shoe 11 of caliber.
  • the cap 16 is shown in detail in Figures 8a and 8b. It includes a cylindrical central part 17 on which are arranged axial slots 30, regularly distributed angularly (slots which are here six in number).
  • the central part 17 ends at one end with nozzles 31 which are intended to come into a groove 32 arranged in the front part of the bore 10 of the shoe 11.
  • the slots 30 give a certain flexibility to the cylindrical central part 17, which allows the positioning of the spouts 31 in the groove 32 by elastic deformation.
  • the beaks thus secure the cap 16 and the shoe 11 of the projectile at the bore 10.
  • the cap has an internal recess 18 which can receive the end of the bar 9.
  • the cap comprises an annular flange 19, intended to be made integral with the plug 3a by fixing means constituted here by pinching the thinned rim 20 of the flange 19 between the ring 4a and the front plug 3a.
  • the annular flange 19 also includes a conical surface 33 which provides a circular zone of reduced thickness 34 with a diameter substantially equal to that of the cylindrical central part 17.
  • This zone of reduced thickness 34 constitutes a fracture initiator whose symmetry with respect to the axis of the ammunition allows a rupture during the firing of the ammunition without causing a non-axial impact on the projectile.
  • the connection of the cap 16 by clipping the spouts 31 onto the shoe 10 allows quick and easy mounting of the ammunition on the plug 3a, in the axial position desired for the latter, and without stressing the belt 14.
  • the positioning the rupture initiator in the vicinity of the external diameter of the cylindrical central part 17 facilitates the fragmentation of the cap 16 at the time of firing.
  • the collar 19 plays the role of a seal for the ammunition and makes it possible to prevent outside moisture from entering the interior of the case.
