  • the present invention provides an enclosure for isolating a patient comprising: an external frame; a flexible envelope, preferably disposable, suspended from and hanging within the frame, the envelope having a bottom, top, two sides, a front and a rear wall portion, one of the side or front wall portions being fitted with a closable entry means allowing entry of the patient; an opening in one of the wall portions fitted with an integral filter means adapted to filter out infectious particles from the air and to cooperate with a pump means so that air is drawn by the pump means from the enclosure through said filter means, creating a negative pressure inside the enclosure; and valve means allowing unidirectional air passage from the outside to the inside of the enclosure.
  • the present invention further provides a system for isolating a patient comprising said enclosure and said pump means.
  • the filter means suitably comprises a filter body and an integration means which is integral with the filter body and which is attached to the peripheral portions of said opening in a manner that avoids any air leak.
  • the pump means comprises typically a casing having an aperture of a size essentially that of the filter means, and comprises a pump adapted to draw air through the aperture and said attachment means being adapted to engage the aperture.
  • the enclosure of the invention preferably comprises an airlock screen proximal said entry means, adapted to create an airlock space between it and the entry means so as to minimize the risk of contamination when the entry means is opened.
  • the valve means is suitably a flapper type valve.
  • the valve means may typically be situated in a portion of the envelope touching the airlock space, whereby this space is continuously and effectively ventilated with fresh and clean air.
  • Fig. 1 showing the enclosure generally designated 10 having a frame 12 and a flexible envelope 14 made of a pliable, preferably transparent plastic material such as polyethylene or polypropoline.
  • Envelope 14 has a bottom 16 , top 18 , left 20 and right 22 sides, a front 24 and rear 26 wall portions .
  • the flexible envelope 14 is fastened to frame 12 by means of a plurality of fastening straps 28 .
  • the envelope 14 is typically disposable.
  • the enclosure defines a cuboid space sufficiently long to contain a patient's bed 30 and sufficiently wide to allow some space on the side of the bed for placing medical equipment, to allow working space for the medical personnel, etc.
  • Front wall 24 has an entry 32 closable by means of a zipper 34 .
  • the entry is sufficiently wide to allow entry of patient and of a patient's bed.
  • the front wall 24 is also fitted with a flapper valve 36 which allows the passage of air essentially in only one direction - from the outside into the inside of the enclosure, through openings 38 .
  • an air-lock screen 40 which defines an airlock space 41 providing some isolation between the entry and the part of the enclosure containing the patient's bed, so as to minimize the risk of contamination, e.g. when a medical personnel enters the enclosure.
  • the left wall portion 20 of the envelope has a service opening 42 fitted with a sleeve 44 allowing the medical personnel to provide some treatment to the patient without having to enter the enclosure.
  • the rear, bottom end of the right wall portion 22 has an opening 46 fitted with filter means 48 and a pump means 50 supported on the frame by means of supporting bars 52 .
  • filter means 48 consists of a high efficiency filter body 52, typically a H.E.P.A. type filter, capable of filtering out about 99.97% of particles larger than 3 ⁇ m.
  • the filter means further has a frame 54 typically made of polyethylene or the like which is integral with the filter body and is welded to the sheet portions surrounding opening 46 thus avoiding any air leak from the filter body's circumference. Thus, air is capable of passing only through the filter body 52 .
  • a frame 54 defines a socket 56 adapted to receive the peripheral wall portions 58 of pumping means 60 .
  • Pumping means 60 has generally the shape of an open box with a front open side and is fitted with an air-sucking type pump, typically a centrifugal pump 62 , powered by a motor 64 and has an air outlet 65 .
  • the pump receives power from electric power cord 66 and has an on-off switch 68 and an indicator light 70 .
  • the pump should be adapted to suck air at a relatively high rate, e.g. about 80 cubic feet per minute (CFM) notwithstanding the resistance to air flow by the filter body 52 (the resistance to air flow by a filter body having the above specifications and having a size of 8''x8''x3'' has a resistance to air flow of about 250 pascal).
  • 80 CFM air flow minimizes the chance that infectious particles, e.g. bacteria or aerosol particles exhaled by the patient, containing viruses or bacteria, etc. will escape through other openings of the enclosure essentially to zero.
  • the filter is in fact an integral component of the envelope, there is only a very small and negligible risk of contagious particles escaping to the environment even when the pump stops such as in a case of power failure, or when disassembing the enclosure.
  • the envelope is disposable, the filter is disposed with it and there is then no need for any special decontamination process for this item.
