Während das Umreifungsmittel von dem einen Umreifungsmittelwickel abgezogen und von der Maschine verarbeitet wird, befindet sich der zweite Umreifungsmittelvorrat in Warteposition. Damit beim Aufbrauch des gegenwärtig verarbeiteten Umreifungsmittels automatisch Umreifungsmittel vom wartenden Umreifungsmittelvorrat verarbeitet werden kann, sind den Wickelkernen der Umreifungsmittelwickel jeweils eine mittels Fotozellen abgetastete Reflektionsfläche zugeordnet. Leert sich nun der eine Umreifungsmittelwickel, ändert sich bezüglich der ihm zugeordneten Fotozelle das Reflektionsverhalten, sobald deren Strahl auf die Reflektionsfläche trifft. Deshalb überdeckt der reflektierende Klebestreifen 13 einen axial mittleren Bereich des Wickelkerns 10, so daß der aus der Zeichnung ersichtliche Restvorrat 11 an Umreifungsmittel 12 noch auf dem Wickelkern 10 verbleibt, nachdem die Umreifungsmittelendeerkennung wirksam geworden ist. Auch bei Befestigung des Umreifungsmittelanfangs an einem Stirnende des Wickelkerns 10 würde man entsprechend den reflektierenden Klebestreifen 13 in der Längsmitte des Wickelkerns 10 anordnen können.
