- the invention relates to a sealing arrangement for an internal combustion engine with a cylinder head, a cylinder block, a cylinder liner and sealing means.
- the cylinder liner is inserted into a bore in the cylinder block and is supported on it. It has a hollow cylindrical part, an annular sealing collar which extends radially outward from the cylindrical part, a piston bore and a collar sealing surface which essentially faces the cylinder head.
- the sealants engage the collar seal surface and a corresponding cylinder head seal surface to prevent combustion gases from escaping the piston bore.
- the seal must have sufficient spring properties to compensate for unevenness in the sealing surfaces.
- it must be rigid enough so that it does not give way to the extent that insufficient tension can cause the seal to break.
- it is known to clamp the collar of the cylinder liner between the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
- a disadvantage of such an arrangement can be that the clamping force bends the collar so that its outer peripheral edge is further away from the cylinder head than its inner peripheral edge. This increases the likelihood of seal failures.
- Another problem with such an arrangement is that the considerable alternating forces which are caused by the compressive forces occurring within the cylinder are transmitted to the collar and are superimposed on the clamping forces. This leads to the occurrence of considerable bending moments on the collar of the cylinder liner, which, however, is to be kept as small as possible by appropriate dimensioning and arrangement of the collar clamping surface and the support surface on the cylinder block.
- the object on which the invention is based is seen in specifying a sealing arrangement for cylinder liners of the type mentioned at the outset which overcomes the problems mentioned and in particular effectively counteracts a radial outbreak of the sealing means without excessive clamping forces being required.
- At least one of the sealing surfaces is inclined relative to a flat, radially extending surface in such a way that a radially inner region of the sealing surface which adjoins the cylindrical part, protrudes from a radially outer area of the sealing surface.
- the radially inner area is further from the opposite sealing surface than the radially outer area.
- the sealing surface thus forms an annular frustoconical surface which is concave in the direction of the other sealing surface.
- the frustoconical sealing surface of the sealing arrangement according to the invention withstands a radial expansion of the sealing means and produces a wedge effect, which increases the sealing engagement of the sealing means with the cylinder head sealing surface and the collar sealing surface when the sealing means expand radially.
- the single figure shows the cross section through an upper portion of the cylinder head of a diesel engine with a cylinder head gasket arrangement according to the present invention.
- the engine includes a cylinder block 10, a cylinder head 12, and a hollow cylinder liner 14 that includes a piston bore 17.
- the cylinder liner 14 consists of a hollow cylindrical part 16 and an annular flange or collar 18, also called a sealing collar, which extends radially outwards and projects radially beyond the cylindrical part 16.
- the collar 18 is supported on a countersunk shoulder 20 in the cylinder block 10.
- the cylinder liner 14 has an annular collar sealing surface 22, which is essentially a cylinder head sealing surface 23 is facing.
- a seal insert 24, such as that supplied by Victor Products Division of Dana Corporation, USA, is inserted between the cylinder liner 14 and the cylinder head 12 to prevent combustion gases from escaping from the piston bore 17.
- the sealing insert 24 contains a sleeve 25 which is designed as a circular ring with a U-shaped cross section, a fire ring 27 and a circular ring 29 made of sealing material.
- the sealing insert 24 seals the cylinder head 12, the cylinder liner 14 and the cylinder block 10 against each other due to the high compression forces between these parts.
- the sleeve 25 is therefore preferably made of metal or other temperature-resistant materials that can withstand the high temperatures.
- the annular collar sealing surface 22 is uniformly chamfered or inclined from the radially inner circumferential edge 26 to a radially outer circumferential edge 28 with respect to the flat, radially oriented cylinder head sealing surface, the radially inner edge 26 being further away from the cylinder head 12 than the radially outer edge 28.
- the angle A of the slope or inclination is preferably about 2 °. The amount of the slope or inclination is exaggerated in the figure for clarity.
- the entire collar sealing surface 22 thus forms an annular, frustoconical surface which is concave in the direction of the cylinder head 12.
- This frusto-conical collar sealing surface 22 resists radial expansion of the sealing insert 24 and produces a wedge effect through which the sealing engagement of the sealing insert 24 with the cylinder head surface 23 and the collar sealing surface 22 is enlarged if the sealing insert 24 extends radially outwards.
- the outer edge 28 of the collar sealing surface 22 projects approximately 0.1 mm (0.004 inches) above the adjacent edge of the cylinder block 10. The step which is formed in this way supports the clamping action and keeping the position of the sleeve 25 of the sealing insert 24.
- a concave frustoconical sealing surface that is mirror-inverted to this can be formed in the cylinder head surface that lies opposite the collar sealing surface.
