Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the field of ammunition launchers.
  • Document DE-A-3904293 on which the preamble of independent claim 1 is based describes an ammunition launcher comprising a plurality of impeller assemblies each capable of receiving ammunition and a base made of thermoplastic material which includes part of the periphery of the different impeller assemblies as well as the rear thereof. More specifically, the base has threaded bores which receive threaded impeller bushings.
  • Document DE-A-3801564 relates to a profile comprising elements made of synthetic material for thermal insulation.
  • This document recommends placing balls, for example hollow glass balls in the aforementioned elements made of synthetic material in order to reduce the weight of the assembly, to increase the modulus of elasticity and to improve thermal insulation.
  • the present invention aims to provide a new ammunition launcher designed to limit the forces applied to the launcher support.
  • the present invention finds particular but not exclusively application to launchers of ammunition, for example launchers of infrared or electromagnetic decoys intended to be fixed on aircraft. Without this application being limiting, the present invention may find very particular application in launchers of infrared or electromagnetic decoy ammunition for the protection of light helicopters against missiles equipped with self-steering or against firing control weapon systems .
  • the ammunition launcher according to the present invention shown in the appended figures comprises a plurality of impeller assemblies 100 capable of each receiving an ammunition 300 and a base 200 of thermoplastic material overmolded on a part of the periphery of the various impeller assemblies 100.
  • each impeller assembly 100 comprises a socket 102, which acts as a launcher tube.
  • the sockets 102 are preferably made of light alloy.
  • Each socket 102 is centered on an axis 104.
  • the different axes 104 of the sockets 102 are mutually parallel.
  • each socket 102 has a stepped base 106. More precisely, at the base 106, each socket 102 has on the one hand an external annular rib 107, on the other hand an internal annular rib 108.
  • each sleeve 102 is closed by an ejectable cover 110 provided with an O-ring seal 112 in an annular groove.
  • the seal 112 seals between the cover 110 and the socket 102.
  • the socket 102 is provided with a socket bottom 120.
  • the socket bottom 120 is advantageously made of light alloy. It is also stepped on its outer periphery 122 so that the socket bottom 120 rests against the above-mentioned annular rib 108.
  • an O-ring seal 124 is engaged in a groove formed on the outer peripheral surface of the socket bottom 120 to ensure the seal between the latter and the associated socket 102.
  • Each socket bottom 120 supports a firing igniter 130. It is preferably an electric igniter.
  • the igniters 130 communicate with propulsion charges 140 also supported by the socket bottoms 120.
  • the igniters 130 are supplied by wire connection pairs 150, 152.
  • a single pair of wires 150, 152 is shown in the figures to simplify the illustration. However, a pair of supply wires 150, 152 is provided for each igniter 130 and therefore for each socket 102 of the launcher.
  • the supply wires 150, 152 come from a connector 210 carried by the base 200. They then pass through the base 200 and end at the igniters 130. More specifically, the supply wires 150, 152, pass through the socket bottom 120 associated with a grommet 126 before reaching the igniter 130.
  • each socket bottom 120 supports in front of the igniters 130 and propulsion charges 140, a steel grid 160.
  • an aluminum flake 170 is interposed between the steel grid 160 and the load 140. The steel grid 160 and the aluminum flake 170 can be held on the bottom of the socket 120 by crimping at 162.
  • the base 200 comprises a body of thermoplastic material overmolded on a part of the periphery of the impeller assemblies 100 and on the rear thereof.
  • the base 200 can be made of any suitable conventional material. However, it is preferably polyurethane.
  • the base 200 is overmolded on the rear half of the periphery of the sockets 102 and on the rear of the latter, that is to say on the rear of the socket base 120. At this level, the base 200 forms a canvas 202.
  • this fabric 202 has a thickness of between 5 to 15mm, preferably between 8 and 9mm.
  • Said thickness of the fabric 202 is considered along the axis 104.
  • the base 200 formed of a single overmolded part, is preferably delimited by a parallelepipedic envelope.
  • the base 200 is covered on its lateral faces parallel to the axes 104 and on its front face 204, that is to say its face oriented towards the ejection of the ammunition, a metal fairing 220.
  • the base 200 is provided with various spacers 230.
  • the spacers 230 are formed for example of cylindrical tubes.
  • the axes 231 of the spacers are parallel to the axes 104 of the sockets 102.
  • the spacers 230 are of course aligned with holes 221 provided in the fairing.
  • the base 200 is molded onto the spacers 230.
  • the spacers 230 allow the launcher to be fixed on any suitable support using simple studs.
  • the arrangement of the impeller assemblies 100 on the base can be the subject of numerous variant embodiments. According to Figures 2 and 3 there is shown an arrangement in the form of a row of eight impeller assemblies 100 aligned. This provision is however in no way limiting. One can for example provide an arrangement in N rows, M columns of the impeller assemblies 100 or any other suitable variant.
  • the present invention can find application in particular in the launching of munitions containing infrared or electromagnetic decoys. This provision is however in no way limiting.
  • the present invention can be used to launch all types of ammunition. For this reason, the ammunition forming an infrared decoy shown in the appended figures will not be described in more detail below.
  • the operation of the launcher according to the present invention is essentially the following.
  • each cartridge 300 contained in an impeller assembly 100 is done via the connector 210. More specifically, the firing of an electric igniter 130 is controlled by the application of an appropriate electric current to the pair of terminals of the connector 210 connected to the associated supply wires 150, 152. The ignition of the electric igniter 130 initiates the propellant charge 140. The thrust produced by the combustion gases thus generated after breaking the aluminum flake 170 allows the ejected cartridge 300 to exit from the socket 102 by undoing the socket at the level of the cover 110. Simultaneously, during propulsion, the combustion gases can ignite pyrotechnic elements, such as delays incorporated in the cartridge 300.
  • the base 200 fulfills a double function: on the one hand, the base 200 mechanically and precisely connects the various impeller assemblies 100, on the other hand the base 200 serves as a shock absorber.
  • the balls advantageously each comprise at least one rigid skin.
  • the balls are preferably hollow balls made of metal or plastic. Where appropriate, the balls may be formed from a central core of compressible material, for example polystyrene, surrounded by a rigid outer skin.
  • the beads can be formed according to any conventional technique known to those skilled in the art.
  • the balls can for example be produced by depositing, on nuclei soluble in a solvent, a coating of porous nickel or another equivalent material, then by placing the cores thus coated in a solvent until dissolution of the nuclei, as indicated for example. in document FR-A-2585373. If necessary, the soluble core can be removed by means of a perforation made in the coating as taught by documents FR-A-1311777 and US-A-4464231.
  • the thicknesses of the rigid skin or coating of the balls, as well as their diameter can be the subject of numerous variant embodiments, depending on the desired rigidity.
