Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a radio-frequency apparatus for voting teleinformation of the type comprising a number of intelligent terminals, each provided with a keyboard, a power supply of its own with related buffer battery, auxiliary circuits, an identification code and a real transmitting unit which, through a transmission medium, succeeds in making information to be transmitted from each terminal to a centralized receiving unit provided with a real receiving circuitry and a frequency-synthetizer circuit both of known type, as well as with a processing unit associated therewith.
  • the main object of the present invention is to eliminate the above mentioned drawbacks which are present in currently used systems and apparatus, by accomplishing and providing a radio-frequency apparatus for voting teleinformation adapted to ensure an optimal control of voting in a very modular manner which, as regards the apparatus, may be optionally expanded in the amount of installed terminals and at the same time does not put particular limitations as regards the terminal distance from the central unit, although said terminals are linked by an attenuation relationship in the transmitted signal.
  • a radio-frequency apparatus for voting teleinformation of the type comprising a number of intelligent terminals, each provided with a keyboard, a power supply of its own with related buffer battery, auxiliary circuits, an identification code and a real transmitting unit which, through a transmission medium, succeeds in making information to be transmitted from each terminal to a centralized receiving unit provided with a real receiving circuitry and a frequency-synthetizer circuit both of known type, as well as with a processing unit associated therewith, said apparatus being characterized in that the transmission medium is represented by the radio duct which, within a definite frequency band, allows each terminal to talk to the centralized receiving unit in a diversified manner in time and with possibility of identification, which receiving unit is in turn characterized in that it exhibits, in combination with said circuits of known type, a control and timing circuitry to scan the transmission channels of each terminal, and a demodulation circuitry to handle the incoming information which is sent to the processing unit for decoding
  • reference numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 generally show a number of transmitting terminals which send radio-frequency signals 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a and 6a to a centralized receiving unit 7 which is connected through a cable 7a to a processing unit 8. While only six terminals have been shown, the system in its practical use can support up to one hundred and twenty-eight terminals.
  • FIG. 2 one of said terminals, the one identified by numeral 1 for example, has been shown therein in order to see the component parts thereof in detail.
  • the whole terminal 1 has been shown in phantom and identified by No. 1. It comprises a CPU (Central Processing Unit) 9 of the type with a monochip microprocessor, which is connected with a telephone-type keyboard 10 having twelve keys and serving to execute votings.
  • CPU Central Processing Unit
  • An identification unit for the terminal has been identified by 11 and serves to diversify peripheral equipments from one another.
  • the terminal is powered by a power supply 12 which is supported by a buffer battery 13. Power is only supplied upon request and is always available.
  • Auxiliary circuits 14 are used to filter signals and to detect the battery state through an appropriate LED not shown in the figure.
  • TX real transmission unit 15
  • a centralized receiving unit 7 has been generally shown therein and surrounded by a dotted line. It comprises the actual receiving unit RX referenced by 16, which is provided with control and timing circuits 17 for the scanning of the different terminals, as well as with a frequency synthetizer 18 for the selection of the frequency band.
  • the receiving unit is provided with a Modem referenced by 19 to demodulate the incoming signals, which Modem is connected cableway with a processing unit (PC) 8, as above specified.
  • PC processing unit
  • Modem 19 is provided with a data pre-processing apparatus which is used to curtail the information packet of its non essential contents.
  • the voter at the beginning of each voting will depress one of the numbered pushbuttons in the keyboard 10 so that he may express his choice.
  • the non-operation of any of said keys can be considered as an abstention and therefore as a non-voting.
  • identification code of terminal 1 is accomplished by means of internal microswitches not shown in the figure, the configuration of which is controlled by the microprocessor present in CPU 9. Also located in this CPU 9 is all logic and all memory as well as the input/output gates of the intelligent unit of terminal 1.
  • the identification code is considered as valid when a single key has been depressed and for a period of at least 10 milliseconds; if two or more keys are simultaneously depressed, or if during the two scannings carried out at about 10 milliseconds from each other the same code is not detected, the voting is considered non valid.
  • the receiving central unit 7 receives the whole information packet which is a real data string in which data are generated by the microprocessor present in the region of block 9 of terminal 1; in this block the following parts can be distinguished: 10 mark bits; 8 code timing bits; 8 terminal address bits; 8 bits referred to the voting code and the battery state; 8 control bits.
  • the communication band is VHF and a distance of 25 Khertz is provided between two channels.
  • the transmission rate of terminal 1 is about 2400 baud and therefore the overall duration of a message is 20 milliseconds. Now on the receiving unit 7 the scanning of each message sent from each terminal 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 for a given time by the control and timing circuits 17 takes place.
  • the stay time of the receiving unit 7 in each involved channel is 75 milliseconds for each peripheral equipment. If we take into consideration 127 peripheral equipments, the scanning time of all terminals in the receiving unit 7 is 9.9 seconds.
  • the signal sent from terminal 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 is suitably modulated and for this reason the auxiliary circuits 14 are provided with filters in order to avoid interferences of adjacent radio ducts.
  • the signal on the intended channel arrives at the receiving unit 7 which carries out the demodulation of the frequency modulated signal through its Modem 19.
  • This demodulated signal is then sent for decoding and related processing to a processing unit 8 which can be a PC or any processor of any level depending upon the load of information and the amount of work to be performed.
  • the signal thus curtailed reaches the processing unit 8 which carries out the necessary, generally statistical, processings or aiming at any different purpose, which are then stored in the memory provided therein and not shown in the figure.
  • the apparatus in question attains the intended purposes, in that an apparatus has been conceived which allows a number of intelligent terminals to talk to a central unit without the link of a physical connection, which also offers the possibility of making the whole system modular and gives a very good degree of reliability as regards the transmitted information.
