Description

The invention relates to a moistening device for letter flaps according to the preamble of claim 1.

For the automatic closing of letters, the rubberized flap of the letter is guided over a moistening device, which processes the rubberized surface of the flap by moistening or softening the glue. Subsequent pressing of the flap closes the letter. A moistening strip leading from a liquid container is used for moistening, over which the letter flap is guided (DE-PS 15 11 420) or a brush is wetted by suitable aids (DE-AS 15 61 881, DE-PS 33 37 488). When using brushes, the brush hair generally rests on pillows, sponges or rollers soaked in liquid, which absorb the liquid and deliver it to the brush hair between two passing letters. The moisture from the brush hair reaches the rubber lining of the letter flap. However, the ability of a brush to absorb liquid is relatively low. It also shortens the time it takes for fluids to be absorbed by pillows, sponges or rollers when the letters run at high speeds. When the flaps of larger letter formats and in particular the flaps which are to be closed over the longer edge of the letter are moistened, this only leads to partial moistening and thus to imperfect closure.

The invention had for its object to provide a moistening device for letter flaps for applying the moisture by means of brushes, which constantly ensures a sufficient liquid supply on the brush even at high throughput speeds.

This object is achieved by the invention as set out in the characterizing part of the first claim.

The invention is explained in more detail below on the basis of a basic illustration, the
  • Fig. 1 shows the section through a moistening device, in which the letter flaps to be moistened, for example, run towards the viewer, and
  • Fig. 2 shows a section along the line AA of Figure 1.

In beiden Figuren tragen gleiche Ausformungen dieselben Bezugszeichen. In both figures, the same formations have the same reference numerals.

The moistening device consists of a liquid container (1) which holds the liquid (2) and a sponge (4) lying on a support (3). The use of a support (3) ensures the presence of an unabsorbed liquid supply. The sponge (4) is fixed in its position by means of a holder (5).

Above the container (1), a brush holder (6) is spring-mounted, which carries the brush (7) and a suction strip (8) extending over the length of the brush (7). The hair of the brush (7) lies on the sponge (4) and absorbs liquid from it as long as there is no letter flap between the brush (7) and holder (5) for moistening. The angled end (9) of the suction strip (8) lies constantly in the liquid (2). As a result, the brush (7) is constantly supplied with liquid, regardless of the throughput speed and thus, if necessary, the rapid succession of the letters to be closed.

For a lower throughput of letters to be closed, for smaller formats and for lower paper qualities, such as. B. recycled paper, the amount of liquid on the brush (7) may be too large. In this case, a suction strip (8) is used, the end of which is not immersed in the liquid. In this case, the suction strip (8) serves as a liquid reservoir. As in the cases described at the beginning, the liquid itself is absorbed directly by the sponge (4) through the brush hairs, part of which is given off to the suction strip (8).

Porous material is used as the material for the sponge (4) and the suction strip (8), for example felts, nonwovens or large-pore foams. Different materials can be used for the sponge (4) and the suction strip (8) depending on the application for the fast or slower run.
