Definitions

  • the invention relates to a protective casing of ejectable ammunition comprising means allowing its cutting, an operation necessary for the ejection of the submunition (s) to be carried out without difficulty of cutting and ejection.
  • a weakening of the structure is provided and located for this purpose at the level where the cutting is to be made. This is obtained by pyrotechnic cylinders.
  • light alloy envelopes are used, in two or three parts linked together by mechanical connecting means calculated to yield under the action of inflatable systems or pyrotechnic jacks.
  • Another solution consists in providing detonating cords on the envelope made of light alloy or of composite material which ensure the cutting.
  • the problem is different since it involves opening openings in an envelope, these openings having the form of panels or cells of the envelope, by means of controlled forces.
  • the object of the invention is to overcome the drawbacks of the aforementioned solutions and to solve the problem of controlling the force to be exerted to obtain the desired opening.
  • a protective casing of ammunition made of metal, shaped by fusion and molding, intended to be cut at a fracturable line comprising for this purpose, in the zone where this fracturable line must be located, temperature-resistant fibers, the entire envelope and said zone being directly obtained by means of melting and molding operations, characterized in that the fibers are interposed in the form of a weft, the plane of which is perpendicular to the internal and external surfaces of the envelope so that, when the metal is poured into the mold, the metal binds the fibers together to form a strip of composite fiber-metal material of width (e) constituting an area of embrittlement.
  • Figure 1 is a schematic representation of an envelope section equipped, according to the invention.
  • FIGS. 2 and 3 illustrate two variants of the weft of fibers incorporated into the envelope during the casting operations, in accordance with the invention.
  • FIG. 4 shows the application of the forces (F) necessary to cut the envelope.
  • Figures 5 to 9 are illustrations of several examples of a breakable line that can be obtained on an envelope according to the invention.
  • the protective envelope or cell according to the invention is in the form of a part obtained by melting or molding with the addition of a weft of composite material, in line with the area where the cutting is to take place.
  • the entire envelope and fracturable zones come, according to the invention, directly from the melting and molding operations.
  • the envelope according to the invention is obtained by using a weft consisting of fibers which, during the casting of the molten metal, are crossed by the metal to form the composite material (fiber-metal) which constitutes the future fracturable line.
  • the structure obtained is illustrated by means of Figure 1 where we find the strip of fabric or weft (2) of width (e) whose plane is perpendicular to the inner and outer surfaces of the envelope (1) molded.
  • these frames can be, as the case may be, and as illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3 respectively, wefts with wide meshes or with small meshes.
  • the spacing of the fibers (s1, s2) and their diameter ( ⁇ 1, ⁇ 2) are parameters that can be easily controlled. Under these conditions, the evaluation of the mechanical stresses of these areas, before and during cutting, is also controlled and can be adjusted by adjusting these parameters on demand in relation to the width (e) of the frame.
  • the actual cutting can be done by any known means such as a pyrotechnic cylinder. It suffices to quantify the necessary shock and to adjust the cylinder accordingly.
  • Such an envelope is illustrated by means of FIG. 4.
  • the envelope (1) comprises in this nonlimiting example, three parts (a), (b), (c) which must be cut and ejected.
  • pyrotechnic means apply to them, in a known manner, forces (F) whose value is a function of the dimensioning of the frame (2) of metal-fiber composite material previously calculated, frame which is more visible on Figure 1 which is an enlargement of the area (X) of the envelope (1).
  • Figures 5, 6 and 7 respectively illustrate the frangible lines (40) arranged longitudinally along the envelope (1) of a cargo ship (100), and (41) of a panel (101).
  • FIG. 8 represents the fracturable line (43) between two structural sections (A) and (B).
  • Figures 9a and 9b illustrate the fracturable line (44) cut out of cells (103).
  • the invention finds its application in the manufacture of rockets or cargo carriers carrying submunitions for which, at a given instant, it is necessary to be able, on the chosen combat zone, to cut and eject the protective envelope.
  • the invention allows perfect control of mechanical stresses, reliability of cutting and a competitive manufacturing cost.
