Definitions

  • the subject of the invention is a handling device for storing and introducing a casting start-up dummy into a continuous metal casting installation.
  • a continuous metal casting installation normally comprises, along a casting line, a bottomless ingot mold followed by a device for guiding and secondary cooling of the cast product.
  • the entire installation is placed in a building provided with handling means such as overhead traveling cranes which make it possible to bring the bags filled with liquid metal and to place them above the installation, the metal being poured out. first in an intermediate container and then in the mold. This is placed at the level of a pouring floor on which the personnel move and where the various control means of the installation are arranged.
  • the device for secondary cooling and cooling of the product generally consisting of a cage fitted with rolls for supporting the product and cooling water spraying ramps.
  • the roller cage is curved in an arc of a circle so as to bring the product poured vertically into the ingot mold horizontally. At its exit, it leads into a driving and straightening device also called an extraction cage and then onto a roller table equipped with means for shearing the product cast in slabs or bars which are then evacuated.
  • a device called “dummy” or “false bar” which includes a starting head intended to close off the bottom of the mold at the start of the casting of the metal which solidifies the along the walls of the mold and can then be pulled from below.
  • the starting head which can be detachably hooked onto the cast product, is extended downwards by the manikin properly said, consisting for this purpose of a series of elements articulated in the manner of the links of a chain and which descends inside the secondary cooling cage.
  • the latter consists of two series of rollers placed on either side of the product and, from a certain level above the mold, certain rollers are driven in rotation so as to cause the descent of the cast product.
  • the dummy must therefore have a sufficient length to reach the level of the drive rollers so as to be pulled down when starting at the casting speed.
  • the mannequin must obviously be separated from the cast product so that the casting can continue continuously. This is why the secondary cooling and extraction device is provided with means for evacuating the manikin outside the casting line. Many devices have been devised for this purpose. It is possible, for example, to make an opening on one face of the roller cage associated with means for guiding the manikin towards the outside. But we can also, more simply, evacuate the mannequin at the exit of the extraction cage, when it arrives on the roller table.
  • the dummy is taken up by a handling device, which places it on a storage device where it is kept in reserve to be reintroduced into the ingot mold at the start of a new casting.
  • the dummy can be introduced into the mold in two different ways: either from below it, and this is then an “introduction from below”, or from above this one, and it is then an "introduction from above”.
  • a flexible link such as a cable or a chain provided at its end with a handling hook and which is wound on a winch placed at the level of the casting floor.
  • the hook is first placed on standby in front of the manikin evacuation means, that is to say on the side of the cooling cage when the latter is provided with a lateral evacuation opening or between the output of the extraction cage and the means for shearing the cast product.
  • the mannequin is thus removed from the casting line, then reassembled vertically to the level of the casting floor where it is placed in reserve, for example on an elongated storage track.
  • the manikin When the lifting winch is fixed, the manikin must be supported by another member which releases the hooking head from the handling hook and pulls the manikin on the storage track.
  • the latter is provided with an outlet end opposite the inlet end and which opens above the mold. If the evacuation position of the dummy is not too far from the mold, we can consider having a fixed storage channel, of sufficient length, but to clear the casting floor, it is usual to give the storage lane a length simply of the same order as that of the dummy and place it on a transfer cart which can move on the casting floor between two positions, respectively a dummy ascent position for which the entry end of the storage channel is vertical to the discharge position of the pouring line and a dummy descent position for which the exit end of the storage path is placed vertically in the mold.
  • the descent of the dummy into the mold and then the cooling device must be checked at least until the front end of the dummy can be supported by the drive rollers of the cooling cage.
  • the command and control of the descent of the manikin can be ensured for example by a pair of pinch rollers, placed on either side of the manikin and driven in rotation at a controlled speed.
  • This maneuver is however rather delicate and it is obviously necessary to avoid a sudden fall of the dummy in the ingot mold and the cooling cage which are very fragile organs.
  • the manikin lifting winch is installed at a fixed position on a metal frame integrated either in the casting floor or in the frame of the building and the manikin is supported by another device which moves at the level of the casting to lead it over the mold for a new introduction.
  • the lifting winch is mounted on the transfer carriage so as to move with it.
  • the transfer trolley on which the storage track is placed is provided with rails on which a wagon for supporting the manikin lifting winch can roll.
  • the movement of the wagon on the transfer carriage makes it possible to extend the mannequin on the storage track.
  • the wagon then returns to its initial position and it is provided with a retaining member which engages in the rear end of the mannequin.
  • the wagon carrying the mannequin ascent winch is used, depending on the case, for placing the mannequin on the storage track, then for controlling the descent.
  • the winch on which the lifting hook lifting cable is wound is placed on the transfer trolley of the storage track at the end of output thereof, so as to successively carry out by means of the same winch the raising of the mannequin then its installation on the storage track, the descent of the mannequin into the mold being commanded and controlled by pinch rollers.
  • the subject of the invention is a new handling device capable of carrying out all of the storage lifting operations and of introducing the manikin, and yet less bulky than the known arrangements, which makes it possible to free the casting floor for the maneuvers of the traveling cranes or trolleys serving the casting machine as well as for controlling the operation of this and maintenance work.
  • the operation of the device according to the invention is particularly simple and can be controlled safely.
  • the device according to the invention is therefore of the type in which the mannequin is provided at its front end with a hooking head capable of engaging on a handling hook placed in a waiting position at the exit of the device. guidance and connected by a flexible link to a means for raising the manikin at the level of the casting floor, the device further comprising means for placing the manikin on an elongated storage track comprising an inlet end capable of being placed at the vertical of the raising position of the dummy and an outlet end capable of being placed vertically of the ingot mold and of means for controlling and controlling the descent of the dummy from the storage path in the ingot mold and the device for guidance.
  • the handling device comprises an endless chain stretched between two idler wheels rotatably mounted each around a horizontal shaft, respectively below each end of the storage track and comprising an upper strand passing the along the storage track and a lower return strand and the flexible link for raising the handling hook with the mannequin is connected by its end opposite the hook to a point of attachment on the endless chain, the latter being associated with a drive motor, so that the assembly constitutes a unique means of raising and fitting the mannequin on the storage track by winding the flexible link along the upper strand then the lower strand of the chain as and when measurement of the dummy's ascent and its progress on the storage track.
  • the endless chain is a link chain stretched between two idler gear wheels, at least one of which is locked in rotation on its shaft, the latter being driven by the motor.
  • the storage track consists of two rows of rollers placed on either side of the upper strand of the endless chain and covering a width at least equal to that of the mannequin, said rollers being mounted to rotate around 'horizontal axes perpendicular to the direction of the chain and placed at a level such that the upper part of the rollers is tangent to a horizontal plane extending along the upper strand of the chain, slightly above it.
  • the storage path leads at each end to a pair of guide wheels placed on either side of the corresponding deflection wheel of the endless chain and rotatably mounted around the same rotation shaft.
  • the device comprises a dummy retaining hook fixed to the endless chain and extending transversely outward so as to engage in a link of the dummy when the latter is placed on the support track and to control the downward movement of the dummy in the mold by adjusting the speed of movement of the endless chain.
  • the endless chain, its drive motor and all of the associated members are mounted on a transfer carriage movable on the casting floor between two positions, respectively of raising and lowering of the manikin for which the two return wheels of the endless chain are substantially tangent towards the outside, respectively, to a vertical plane of ascent of the handling hook and to a vertical plane of descent of the dummy in the mold.
  • the device according to the invention with its unique system for lifting and storing the manikin incorporated in the transfer cart has several advantages:
  • FIG 1 there is shown schematically the whole of a continuous casting installation placed inside a building 1 provided with means for supplying ladles 3 such as a traveling crane.
  • ladles 3 such as a traveling crane.
  • the bag 3 is carried by a support 4 above the continuous casting machine proper, the casting being done by means of a dispensing container 5.
  • the casting machine essentially comprises an ingot mold 6 and a guide and cooling cage 7 followed by a drive and straightening apparatus 8. At the outlet of the apparatus 8, the cast product, completely solidified and straightened, is evacuated onto a roller table 9. The assembly is placed below a 10-year-old casting floor at which level the mold 6 is placed.
  • the start of the casting is ensured by a mannequin 12 having the same cross section as the product to be cast.
  • the manikin is shown in more detail in FIGS. 3 to 6 and consists of a link chain preferably having a hollow section open on one side, as seen in FIGS. 4 and 5.
  • the mannequin can be stored on a transfer carriage consisting of a main chassis 11 carried by two pairs of rollers 25 and 26 which roll on a track formed on the casting floor exactly above the machine casting, and therefore centered on the vertical plane passing through the axis of the mold 6 and the cooling cage 7.
  • FIG 1 there is shown the dummy 12 in the start position, its rear end 33 closing the mold 6 while the carriage 11 is in the raised position.
  • This operation is carried out by a hooking chain 15, one end of which is fixed by a special hooking link 18 on the endless chain 17 and the other end of which is fixed on a handling hook 30.
  • the chain 15 hangs vertically passing through an orifice 32 formed in the floor 10 so that the hook 30 comes to be placed in the waiting position at the exit of the straightening trainer device 8.
  • the hook 30 can be positioned in a guide 29 placed at this effect in the roller table 9.
  • the mannequin 12 is controlled to advance at the casting speed by means of the driving rollers 13 of the guide cage 7.
  • the mannequin 12 the rear end 33 of which is removably engaged in the solidified end of the cast product, drives the latter into the guide cage 7 then leaves the straightening trainer 8 to pass over the roller table 9. Its end before 31 floats in the hook 30 placed in the waiting position.
  • An easy-to-design automatic system then controls the drive of the endless chain 17 by means of the motor 23.
  • the hooking link 18 moves towards the mold 6 on the upper strand 17 a of the endless chain 17 by driving the hanging chain 15 and consequently the hook 30 and the mannequin 12 which is suspended there.
  • the chain 15 has a width greater than that of the endless chain 17 and of the wheel 21 and it can come to bear on two smooth-walled return wheels 22, placed on either side of the wheel 21 and mounted idly on the rotation shaft 19 thereof.
  • the wheel 21 ′ is surrounded by a pair of wheels 22 ′ for guiding the attachment chain 15.
  • the chain 15 therefore extends along the upper strand 17 a of the endless chain 17, first passing over the guide wheels 22, then resting on two series of rollers 16 placed on either side of the chain 17, the latter itself being carried by rollers guided in rails integral with the chassis, as seen in FIG. 5.
  • the handling hook 30 therefore raises the manikin 12 vertically through the orifice 32 of the casting floor 10.
  • the attachment chain 15 which remains taut with the weight of the dummy, passes over the guide wheels 22 ′ then runs along the lower strand 17 b of the endless chain 17 passing below the latter.
  • the carriage 11 carries a second row of rollers 27 arranged in pairs on either side of the plane of the endless chain 17, similar to the rollers 16, and which provides a support track extending at the -Dessous the lower strand 17b of the endless chain 17, parallel thereto and which gradually extends the connecting line 15 from the time the link 18 passes attachment on the lower strand 17b .
  • the hook 30 When the hook 30 arrives at the transfer carriage 11, it in turn passes over the guide wheels 22 by driving the hooking head 31 placed at the front end of the dummy 12. As shown in the Figure 6, it forms a hook opening downwards so as to engage the handling hook 30 when the latter is raised and which therefore remains engaged on the handling hook 30 when the latter passes over the return wheels 21 then the upper strand 17 a of the endless chain 17. It is therefore possible to control without interruption, by means of the motor 23, the drive of the endless chain 17; the dummy 12 itself consisting of a link chain, first passes over the idler wheels 21, then extends above the upper strand 17 a on the rollers 16 placed on either side of this last and which therefore constitute a storage channel for the mannequin 12.
  • the movement can be interrupted when the manikin 12 is completely placed on the storage track 16. However, it is advantageous to continue driving the chain 15 until the hooking head 31 of the manikin 12 exceeds the wheels return 21 ′ placed at the front end of the carriage 11, on the side of the mold. In this position, in fact, the hook formed on the head 31 of the mannequin 12 is turned downwards and its profile can be determined so that the handling hook 30 is automatically released under the effect of its weight when it reaches at the level of the support track 27. The attachment head 31 then hangs vertically in the position shown in FIG. 3.
  • the coupling link 18 can be located immediately behind the priming head 33 of the dummy 12.
  • the dimensions of the transfer carriage 11 are therefore determined so that the endless chain 17 has a total length substantially equal to that of the mannequin increased by the length of the attachment chain 15.
  • the attachment link 18 preferably being located at the axis of the idler wheel 21 at the time of attachment (Fig. 1).
  • the mannequin is thus stored on standby on the transfer carriage 11.
  • the movement of the carriage 11 is controlled towards the ingot mold until its lowering position shown in FIG. 2 and for which the priming head 31 which hangs vertically from the front end of the carriage 11 is in alignment with the mold 6.
  • the transfer carriage 11 may be provided with a pinch roller 24 cooperating with a support roller placed on the other side of the mannequin and applied under pressure against the latter.
  • a pinch roller 24 By driving the roller 24 in rotation, it is possible to command and control the downward movement of the dummy 12 inside the mold and then of the guiding device 7 until its front end 31 is at the level of the driving rollers 13 During this movement, the endless chain 17 can be blocked, the mannequin 12 moving on the rollers 16.
  • a second special link 28 in the form of a hook is used which passes through an opening in the mannequin so as to engage on a link thereof, preferably near its rear end 33. All the distances remaining fixed, it suffices to correctly position the hook 28 relative to the handling hook 30 and consequently to the attachment link 18, so that the hook 28 engages in the corresponding orifice provided in the mannequin 12 at the desired position which corresponds to the passage of the hook 28 on the idler 21.
  • the hook 28 it is possible to retain the descent of the mannequin 12 by applying a resistant torque to the chain 17 by means of the mo tor 13. In this way, the dummy 12 does not run the risk of escaping from the pinch rollers 24.
  • the pinch rollers 24 could also simply remove the pinch rollers 24 by providing a push face on the front part of the hook 28 so that the latter can not only retain the dummy by its rear face at the end of the introduction but also advance the dummy to introduce it into the mold.
  • the dummy must be kept on the rollers 16 of the storage pathway at least by its weight or by guide members.
  • the position of the retaining hook 28 is determined so that it passes over the lower sector of the idler 21 ′ and therefore escapes from the dummy 12 at a time when the latter is already supported by the motor rollers 13
  • the dummy 12 thus released is then placed in the starting position for which the priming head 33 closes the lower end of the mold.
  • the casting then begins and the dummy advances in the guide cage 7 at the casting speed.
  • the carriage 11 can be brought back to the ascent position shown in FIG. 1.
  • the motor 23 continues to control the winding of the endless chain 17 until that the handling hook 30 arrives on the return wheels 21, that is to say above the orifice 32.
  • the chain 17 is then stopped and then driven in the opposite direction so as to lower the hook 30 vertically suspended from the chain 15.
  • the chain 17 is stopped when the hook 30 engages in the guide 29, the hooking link 18 then being substantially at the level of the wheels 21 ′.
  • the invention makes it possible to integrate into the transfer carriage, all the components necessary for lifting, storing and introducing the manikin.
  • the height of the transfer carriage depends above all on the diameter which must be given to the deflection wheels placed at the two ends of the endless chain, this diameter itself being linked to the length of the links of the chain constituting the mannequin.
  • the transfer trolley according to the invention is therefore distinguished by a very small footprint which makes it possible to clear the casting platform, the gain in space in height even making it possible to reduce the height of the buildings. , which in new installations can lead to very significant savings.
