Definitions

  • the present invention belongs to the field of packaging of liquid products, in particular of the type intended to contain a dose of product.
  • the invention also relates to the application of such a packaging to washing laundry in the machine.
  • the application FR 8406151 filed on April 18, 1984 (corresponding to EP-A-0152359) for "Method for washing laundry in the machine with a liquid detergent and device for its application” relates in particular to a device, generally rechargeable, which is first filled with liquid detergent, then placed in the machine drum with the washing machine.
  • the detergent contained in the device gradually diffuses into the washing medium and into the laundry in the machine.
  • the device comprises a filling orifice and vents for the gradual release of the liquid within the laundry during washing.
  • Patent application FR 8413210 filed on August 24, 1984 (publication number 2570720) for "Device for machine washing with a liquid detergent and process using said device”, relates to a device of the above type, which is more particularly characterized in that it is in an essentially spherical form.
  • the device comprises a body and an attached assembly, provided with a central filling orifice. A certain number of orifices arranged on this assembly allow the diffusion of the liquid.
  • Patent application FR 8505069 of April 3, 1985 publication number 2579956 for "Packaging container with incorporated metering device, in particular for liquid products"
  • a container comprising a removable metering device cooperating with the device closure which is usually provided with the container.
  • this metering device also functions as a diffuser according to the teachings of the two aforementioned patent applications.
  • a number of embodiments are described to illustrate the removable fixing of the metering and diffusing device on the container containing the liquid product.
  • the shape of the containers containing the liquid detergents can be very variable, and an effort is made to find the packaging which is easy to handle while allowing easy storage with minimal bulk. From this point of view, the shape of a container of the jerrycan type is especially suitable. There are also certain needs to be satisfied, in particular for commercial promotion, where it may be desired to offer consumers packaging containing a single dose of the washing product.
  • the word jerrycan has no limiting meaning but designates any container having a generally flattened shape.
  • the first element of the combination constituting the packaging of the invention is a jerry can of the type of those usually used, for example, for petroleum products, such as petrol.
  • the jerry can is made of a plastic material compatible with liquid detergents, for example polyethylene.
  • Another advantageous characteristic of the jerry can, in addition to its generally flattened shape, is to be designed, preferably, to contain a single dose of detergent, that is to say an amount of detergent making it possible to carry out a washing.
  • the jerry can is of reduced dimensions and it can have a thickness of 1 to 3 cm.
  • the jerry can has an opening passing right through it.
  • this opening be circular although this shape is not critical.
  • a housing which is taken in the thickness of the jerrycan.
  • the second element of the object of the invention combination is a metering and diffusing device whose function is that already described in the patent applications mentioned above.
  • this device is intended to be filled with liquid detergent, to be placed then in the machine drum with the washing machine. Thanks to the orifices with which it is provided, the device allows a progressive diffusion of the detergent within the linen.
  • this metering and diffusing device is suitable for the jerry can containing the liquid detergent and having the opening capable of serving as a receptacle for said device.
  • the device comprises a body of flexible material in the form of a bellows, which can be folded back on itself.
  • This body is made integral with an assembly constituting diffusing means, of the kind already described and illustrated in the aforementioned French patent applications.
  • This attached assembly includes a central opening for filling, as well as a certain number of vents facilitating the diffusion of the liquid detergent during washing. Furthermore, the attached assembly is designed to allow easy gripping, as is known.
  • the bellows When the bellows is folded back, that is to say when the metering and diffusing device is not filled, it occupies a minimum space requirement, the walls of the bellows then pressing against each other.
  • the bellows thus folded applies in the vicinity of the opening of the jerry can.
  • the body of the metering and diffusing device has a substantially spherical shape when deployed. Consequently, in the folded state, the body flattens to form a circular element of small thickness.
  • the opening in the container has a diameter such that it allows free passage to the metering and diffuser assembly, while the housing surrounding the opening serves as a receptacle for the folded bellows. There is thus a conjugation of forms between the folded bellows and the jerry can at the level of the circular opening.
  • the total dimension of the metering and diffusing device in the folded state corresponds to the folded bellows and to the height of the attached assembly. This dimension is substantially equal to the thickness of the jerry can so that, when the device is placed on the jerry can, it fits very substantially into the thickness of the latter. It is preferred that the device in the folded state is not excessively thicker than the jerry can, but an excess thickness of approximately 10% is perfectly acceptable.
  • the present invention takes advantage of the known technique but adapts it to meet the needs of a metering and diffusing device which can then be used in a washing machine.
  • the material constituting the body of the metering and diffusing device must be chosen in such a way that it can easily fold up in the form of a bellows when it is to be held flat on the jerry can. It is advantageous that, when said device is detached from the jerry can, it automatically resumes a substantially spherical shape, the bellows being then deployed, so as to allow the filling of the device with the liquid detergent contained in the jerry can or in any other container may be available. This is why it is preferred that the assembly comprising the diffusing means is an attached assembly, made of a more rigid material, than that of the body of the bellows. Suitable materials are, for example, polyethylenes, polyesters or combinations of these materials, with or without adjuvants.
  • the bellows can deploy automatically when the metering and diffusing device is released from its housing in the jerry can. It is indeed perfectly possible to make a device intended to receive the liquid detergent and which takes its deployed state only during the introduction of the detergent, thanks to its constitution as a bellows, without this shaping having been carried out by itself beforehand.
  • the packaging according to the invention also has holding means ensuring the securing of the device on the jerry can, and in particular keeping the bellows in the folded state.
  • holding means can be chosen by a person skilled in the art and are of no critical importance. It may be a retractable stretch plastic film, as is well known in the field of packaging. In this case, the film is placed around the jerry can-device assembly. It is also possible to use a sheath or a cardboard of suitable shape, wrapping the outer parts of the jerry can and the device. Also, ties or adhesive tapes can be used to keep the bellows attached and folded over the jerry can.
  • the jerry can is filled with liquid detergent, preferably a dose of detergent used for a single wash.
  • the jerry can is provided with its metering and diffusing device, and therefore occupies a minimal space requirement, since the assembly practically does not exceed the thickness of the jerry can.
  • the person who wishes to use the metering and diffusing device for washing machine in a machine removes the means for holding the device on the jerry can, thus constituting a container which can be filled with liquid detergent, preferably that which is contained in the jerry can.
  • the user can then place the metering and diffusing device in the drum of the machine with the laundry to be washed. Thanks to the diffusing means, the detergent contained in the device gradually diffuses, which has a favorable effect on washing the laundry.
  • FIG. 1 and 2 respectively show the jerry can and the metering and diffusing device respectively
  • FIGS. 3 and 4 illustrate the packaging according to the invention, said device then being mounted in the jerry can and cooperating with it.
  • the jerry can shown in front in Figure 1 is designated by the general reference (1). It has a generally parallelepiped shape of small thickness, as illustrated in the perspective views of Figures 3 and 4.
  • the large side faces of the jerry can are designated by the references (2) and (3) respectively; in Figure 1 we therefore see only the face (2).
  • the jerry can (1) has a removable plug (4) for filling and pouring the liquid detergent intended for machine washing.
  • the jerry can (1) is adapted to receive a metering and diffusing device of the type shown in FIG. 2.
  • a circular opening (5) is provided in the body of the jerry can (1) its periphery, on each of the faces (2) and (3), an annular housing (6) whose height (7) (FIG. 3) represents substantially half of the thickness e of the jerry can (FIG. 3).
  • FIG. 2 represents in isolation the metering and diffusing device intended to cooperate with the jerry can of FIG. 1.
  • This device designated by the general reference (8) comprises a body (9) of flexible plastic material, having the shape of a bellows.
  • the body (9) occupies its normal position, that is to say that the walls (14) of the bellows are sufficiently spaced to constitute an interior volume of generally spherical shape, into which the detergent can be poured liquid.
  • the assembly (10) constitutes the diffusing means similar to those already taught in the French patent applications mentioned at the beginning of this description. It thus comprises a central orifice (11) usable for filling, as well as a certain number of orifices (12), ensuring controlled diffusion during use in the washing machine. Furthermore, the assembly (10) is shaped to constitute at its periphery recesses (13) facilitating the gripping of the device (8) during its filling and handling.
  • Figures 3 and 4 illustrate the packaging according to the invention in the position where the metering and diffuser device (8) is mounted in and cooperates with the jerry can (1).
  • the assembly (10) is engaged through the circular opening (5) to project beyond the lateral face (2) of the jerry can.
  • the body (9) is applied by being folded against the housing (6) located around the opening (5).
  • the device (8) is thus applied inside the housing (6) and its maintenance on the jerry can (1) can be ensured by any suitable means, as will be described below.
  • the packaging of the invention substantially retains the flattened shape which the jerry can gives it (1).
  • the dimensions of the assembly (10) are chosen so that it does not extend excessively beyond the plane of the face (2).
  • the walls (14) of the bellows-shaped body (9) press against each other and are inserted into the housing (6), without substantially overflowing beyond the face (3).
  • a package is thus finally obtained, the thickness of which does not practically exceed the thickness e (FIG. 3) of the jerry can (1), although a slight excess thickness is entirely admissible.
  • the nature of the material constituting the body (9) of the device (8) must be chosen so that its flexibility allows it to be easily applied in a practically flat form in the folded state, as indicated in FIG. 4, whereas, in its normal position which is that of FIG. 2, the body (9) preferably has sufficient holding so that the device (8) stands by itself and can be placed on a plane support.
  • materials mention may in particular be made of polyethylenes, polyesters and combinations of such materials, with or without adjuvants.
  • the device (8) is separated from the jerry can (1), which in the example illustrated in the drawings, is easily done by removing the adhesive tape (16). We can then place the device (8) in the position indicated in Figure 2, so that it rests by its bottom on a support, or it can simply be grasped by the recesses (13) fitted to the assembly (10). Liquid detergent can then be introduced through the orifice (11) to fill the device (8) to the desired level. It is advantageous that this quantity of liquid product is that contained in the jerry can (1), and it suffices for this purpose to pour the content of the latter into the device (8). For washing the laundry, the device (8) filled with the appropriate dose of product should be introduced into the machine drum, in accordance with the teaching of the French patent applications cited at the beginning of the description.
  • Figures 1 to 4 relate to a preferred embodiment according to which the dose of product contained in the jerry can (1) corresponds to a washing, so that the user has no hesitation in filling the device (8) until desired level. But it is of course possible to later use the device (8) by filling it with quantities of detergent liquid product taken from other containers. Without departing from the scope of the invention, the jerry can (1) could also be sized so that it contains quantities of liquid product greater than that necessary for a single wash.
  • All kinds of means for holding the device (8) on the jerry can (1) can be used, the solution of the adhesive tape (16) represented in FIGS. 3 and 4 constituting only a simple illustrative example.
  • the combination of the jerry can and the device can be maintained by a thin plastic film or by any other sheath or envelope, made of plastic, cardboard and other similar materials widely used in packaging techniques. It is nevertheless important that the means chosen relate to the advantages of the flat shape of the packaging, and do not introduce excessive excess thickness thereon.
  • the person skilled in the art can choose all kinds of shapes suitable for the jerry can as well as for the opening made therein and designed to receive the metering and diffusing device. Since the preferred embodiment consists in giving this device a substantially spherical shape when it is in its normal deployed position, it is advantageous for the opening formed in the jerry can to have a circular section, but this is absolutely not not necessary.
