Definitions

  • the present invention belongs to the field of packaging and more particularly relates to a single-use container for the packaging of substances which do not have satisfactory compatibility when they are present.
  • Such containers are capable of receiving numerous applications in a wide variety of technical fields, for example washing, cleaning or rinsing a wide variety of articles.
  • a highly preferred application of the container according to the invention is that of washing laundry in the machine.
  • the invention also relates to the process for obtaining such a container.
  • Such packaging containers are for single use and include a plurality of compartments, the basic concept resulting in an implementation necessarily offset in time of the substances contained in each of the individual sachets. Furthermore, it is essential that the latter be soluble in water or have particular properties to allow water to pass at a determined temperature. This is why the outer sachet is made from a sheet of open pore polyurethane foam, while the inner sachet is made of polyvinyl alcohol.
  • US-A-2,412,833 relates to a dispenser cap for packaging, which can allow the simultaneous distribution of the contents of a large bottle and a small bottle, which is housed in the neck of the large.
  • the small bottle may contain a fragrance agent, while the large bottle contains fruit juice.
  • the device consists of three separate parts, namely the two aforementioned bottles and an intermediate piece serving as a mounting member for the small bottle inside the large one. All these parts are provided with cooperating threads which are oriented vertically when the packaging is standing up. It is a reusable type device, of which all the constituent parts can be separated. Thus, one can remove the mounting member with the small bottle to use only the large bottle.
  • US-A-2,412,833 does not teach a single-use container, designed to contain substances which are not sufficiently compatible with each other, composed of only two parts in addition to the closure cap and having no thread , its two parts can not be separated when the container is filled.
  • the patent FR-A-1,369,260 relates to a dispenser packaging with an external envelope and several - for example two - interior containers, defining compartments each intended to receive a substance, which can be distributed by a respective channel.
  • a cap covers all of the outlet openings of the channels.
  • the outer casing is relatively rigid, while the inner receptacles, formed of a flexible sheath, are expanded to be applied to the inner wall of the outer casing, this wall being coated with adhesive to ensure permanent fixing of sheath.
  • two interior compartments are needed, so the package includes, in addition to the closure cap, at least three separate parts, namely the two flexible sheaths and the rigid outer casing.
  • the vertical distribution channels constitute mounting members making it possible to suspend the sheaths inside the external envelope.
  • the patent FR-A-1,369,260 does not teach a container composed only of two parts for conditioning two different substances, these two parts cooperating at the level of annular zones extending parallel to the bottom of the container.
  • the packaging described in this prior patent would not be suitable as a metering and diffusing device in a machine washing operation.
  • the patent US-A-2,321,998 relates to a packaging intended to be filled with granular substance.
  • This package includes a large container at the top of which is screwed at least one smaller container. It is intended not for the simultaneous distribution of the contents of the two containers, but to allow easier filling with the granular substance, which is the same in the two containers. All the components of the packaging are separable, precisely to carry out the filling separately.
  • each of the containers is capped by a cap, which is necessary for the filling operations.
  • US-A-2,321,998 does not teach a single-use container designed to contain substances which are not sufficiently compatible with each other, composed only of two parts and having no thread, its two parts cannot be separated when the container is filled.
  • the packaging described in this prior patent would not be suitable as a metering and diffusing device in a machine washing operation.
  • Patent US-A-3,289,887 deals with the distribution of poorly compatible products, one of the products possibly being, for example, a detergent containing an abrasive, while the other is a compound releasing active chlorine, in particular l 'bleach.
  • This prior patent teaches a container having a closure tip having a very particular structure, in order to constitute a mixing chamber. Such a container cannot be used for washing laundry in the machine.
  • the subject of the invention is a multi-compartment container for single use, which makes it possible to simultaneously deliver at the time of use the content of each of the compartments, this independently of the temperature of the medium.
  • the constituent materials of the walls of the compartments are of no critical importance, and, contrary to the teaching of the aforementioned European patent application 0132726, these walls are waterproof, the content of each of the compartments discharging through holes provided in advance.
  • the application FR 2,563,250 filed on April 18, 1984 for "machine washing process in the machine with a liquid detergent and device for its application” relates in particular to a device, generally rechargeable, which is first of all filled with detergent liquid, then placed in the machine drum with the laundry to be washed.
  • the detergent contained in the device gradually diffuses into the washing medium and into the laundry in the machine.
  • the device comprises a filling orifice and vents for the gradual release of the liquid within the laundry during washing.
  • Patent application FR 2,570,720 filed on August 24, 1984 for "Device for washing machine with a liquid detergent and method using said device” relates to a device of the above type which is more particularly characterized in that that it is presented in an essentially spherical form. A certain number of orifices allow the diffusion of the liquid.
  • a particularly advantageous application of the container according to the invention is the packaging of formulations for liquid detergents containing peroxygen constituents, that is to say constituents intended to release active oxygen during washing.
  • the invention therefore relates to a container according to claim 1.
  • the expression “of generally spherical shape”, which is used to define the external envelope of the container, should not be understood as limitingly characterizing a sphere or a quasi-sphere. This expression covers other surfaces of revolution of the ovoid type, the curvatures of which are such that the container does not cause any damage to the laundry in a machine washing operation during which the container is placed in the drum.
  • the internal compartment meanwhile, can be delimited by a wall of any shape, taking into account the preferred technique used for its manufacture and described below, it is generally a surface of revolution, of the kind spherical or ovoid.
  • the outer envelope prefferably has grooves intended to give it rigidity, as is known in the field of plastics, especially when these are shaped by a blowing technique.
  • the internal compartment has bellows, giving it the appearance of a kind of melon.
  • the constituent materials of the external envelope and the internal compartment can be identical or different. It is preferred that these materials are chosen so that the external envelope and the internal compartment have a different rigidity, for example that the internal compartment is made of a material of rigidity greater than that of the external envelope and vice versa. Thus if the materials selected for the two elements belong to the same category of plastic material, it is advantageous that the respective materials of the two elements differ in their rigidity.
  • the plastics which can be used are those which can be shaped by the blowing or injection-blowing technique but, since the container is intended for single use, the respective walls of the external envelope should be given and internal thickness as small as possible, so that the total weight of the container be as small as possible. Wall thicknesses of the order of 0.3 to 1 mm are suitable.
  • the preferred materials are chosen from polypropylenes, polycarbonates and polyethylenes, or combinations of these materials, with or without adjuvants.
  • the invention also relates to a process for obtaining the above container, said process being defined in claim 7.
  • the method described above can include many variants which differ in some of their stages or in the succession of said stages.
  • step (3), (4) and (5) is carried out after step 1 (1) while step (2) of filling the external envelope is carried out after said succession and before step (6).
  • step (2) is carried out after step (6).
  • the formation of the internal compartment can be done in several ways.
  • an insert is provided through the circular opening of the external envelope, provided with a sheath of flexible plastic material, inside which a vacuum is created for the contract, after which the vacuum is interrupted inside the sheath when the upper part thereof bears on the edges of said opening and the internal compartment is formed from the sheath by blowing or injection-blowing.
  • an insert provided with a plastic sheath having a rigidity and a transverse dimension allowing its passage through the circular opening, after which the internal compartment is formed directly from the sheath by blowing or injection-blowing.
  • the method according to the invention and its variants make it possible to obtain a pre-filled container using substances which are not compatible with each other, said container being for single use.
  • the method is implemented automatically using plastic sheets at the outset making it possible to form in a single pass a plurality of external envelopes, for example six envelopes distributed symmetrically about a median axis.
  • the mechanical strength of the assembly is then improved and handling is easier, thanks to the fact that the outer envelopes are all secured to a sheet retaining a general plate shape.
  • a container of the type mentioned above, or obtained by the process which has just been described, makes it possible to package substances which are insufficiently compatible with each other to allow storage conditions which meet practical needs.
  • a sensitive additive for liquid detergent can be introduced into the internal compartment, for example an additive based on peroxygen compounds, the rest of the formulation of the liquid detergent being placed in the envelope external to the outside of this internal compartment.
  • the containers according to the invention can find all kinds of applications which require the use of substances which are not very compatible or not mutually compatible, which have to be delivered simultaneously in a washing, rinsing, cleaning or analogues.
  • a particularly advantageous application consists in using such containers in a machine washing process described in the aforementioned French patent applications 2,563,250 of April 18, 1984 and 2,570,720 of August 24, 1984.
  • the container according to the invention makes then function of metering and diffusing device in accordance with the teaching of these patent applications.
  • the internal compartment contains an additive based on peroxygen compounds, while the other compartment contains the rest of the liquid detergent formulation.
  • the container is placed in the machine drum with the washing machine.
  • the detergent and the additive contained therein gradually diffuse in the washing medium and in the laundry in the machine, and this simultaneously, thanks to the gradual discharge of the detergent and the additive. Optimal results are obtained for washing clothes.
  • the container Given the vocation for single use of the container according to the invention, it is generally not reusable and, in particular, at the end of a machine wash cycle, once the active products (detergent and additive) have completely left their respective compartments, the entire container is generally deformed but its constituent elements nevertheless remain integral with each other, which allows on the one hand not to damage the laundry, and on the other apart, not to give rise to elements liable to block the pipes. Thus, once the washing of the linen is finished, the container is recovered in the drum of the machine, in a generally flattened form.
  • Figures 7 to 12 illustrate the successive stages of a process for obtaining a container according to the invention for single use.
  • FIGS. 7 to 12 FIG. 12, in particular, showing a disposable container according to the invention, with two compartments, from which the protective cap has been removed.
  • the container comprises an outer casing (1) of generally spherical shape and with a flat bottom (3), with a circular opening (2) diametrically opposite the bottom (3).
  • This circular opening (2) is delimited by an annular surface (2a) extending in a plane substantially parallel to that of the bottom (3).
  • This envelope may for example have a thickness of 0.5 mm and be made from polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, and a combination of such polymers, with or without adjuvants.
  • the container also has an internal compartment designated by the general reference (4) and located entirely inside the external envelope (1).
  • This compartment is illustrated on the right-hand side of FIG. 1, in FIGS. 2 to 4 and 6. It has a wall forming bellows (12) (FIG. 6).
  • a cylindrical wall (5) is formed which first extends vertically, then then horizontally to come into abutment (collar (5a)) on the annular edge (2a) of the opening (2) of the external envelope (1).
  • the internal compartment (4) is therefore opened upwards by an orifice (11) of circular section.
  • holes (7) in the example shown there are six of these holes) are distributed regularly around the central orifice (11).
  • the container is closed by a protective cap which is illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3 and 5.
  • This cap has a cylindrical protuberance (10) which engages inside the orifice (11) of the internal compartment (4 ).
  • a wall (8) which is applied to the annular flange (5a), in order to close the holes (7) made in it.
  • the plug ends with a tongue (9) allowing it to be maneuvered.
  • the materials of the internal compartment (4) are chosen from the same polymers than those of the outer casing (1), but it is preferred that they have different stiffness characteristics with respect to the latter.
  • FIG. 7 shows the body (1) of the external envelope which is obtained by blowing or injection-blowing with its upper opening (2) delimited by the annular rim (2a) and its flat bottom (3).
  • FIG. 7 shows a liquid product (15) which has been introduced into the envelope (1) once the latter has been produced.
  • the product (15) is, for example, a liquid detergent formulation which does not include an additive of the peroxygenated compound type.
  • the volume of the envelope (1) and the quantity of liquid product (15) are calculated relatively to each other, taking into account that the container is designed to receive a single dose for a subsequent washing operation.
  • the quantity of liquid (15) must therefore be sufficient to perform this function, the volume of the envelope (1) being dimensioned so as to allow the subsequent progress of the other steps of the method as will be described. Such determinations are within the reach of the skilled person, and need not be explained further.
  • FIG. 8 illustrates the start of the fitting of an insert carrying a plastic sheath (13).
  • the cross section of the sheath (13) is less than the diameter of the opening (2); to allow insertion, it may or may not be applied to the interior of the sheath (13) a vacuum or suction through the upper opening (11).
  • the sheath (13) preferably comprises a bellows structure (12). At its upper part, the sheath (13) is connected to a cylindrical portion (5) to which is connected a wall (5a) in the form of a collar inside which is the orifice (11).
  • FIG. 9 illustrates the progression of the introduction of the sheath (13) inside the envelope (1).
  • the flange (5a) is dimensioned to cover practically the entire opening (2), until reaching the arrangement shown in Figure 10 where we see that the flange (5a) comes to rest on the annular rim (2a) of the envelope (1).
  • the vacuum which may have been applied inside the sheath (13) is broken.
  • This interruption of the suction can be done when the flange (5a) actually comes to rest on the annular edge (2a), but it is also possible, as shown in Figures 9 and 10, that the suction is cut off as soon as the cylindrical part (5) has passed the opening (2) of the outer casing (1), so that as soon as one arrives at the situation illustrated in FIG. 10, the blowing can start inside of the sheath (13).
  • the operation illustrated in FIG. 12 is that of drilling the holes (7) in the flange (5a) located at the top of the internal compartment (4). For example, six holes are drilled (7) to make an internal compartment as illustrated in FIG. 6.
  • containers of generally spherical shape since the latter is most suitable for use in the drums of washing machines.
  • the containers it would be perfectly possible for the containers to have a different shape, this shape being of revolution, taking into account the use of the blowing technique.
  • the walls delimiting the various compartments of the container are impermeable to the aqueous medium as well as to the liquid products usually used in washing, cleaning or rinsing techniques.
  • the design of the container according to the invention is in fact based on a diffusion oriented through openings which are respectively provided with the compartments.
  • FIGS. 7 to 12 can be modified in accordance with the variants previously mentioned.
  • the filling of the container can be carried out once the internal compartment has been formed.
  • the holes (7) can be produced beforehand on the upper flange (5a) of the plastic sheath (13).
