- the invention relates to a ram boring machine with a pneumatically or hydraulically driven percussion piston movable reciprocally in a housing and an axially movable chisel arranged at the front end of the housing, which is acted upon directly or indirectly by the percussion piston.

- the chisel is used to smash and displace the soil.
- the movable arrangement of the chisel offers the advantage that the impact energy of the percussion piston can initially be transferred specifically to the chisel, so that a higher shattering energy is available.
- DE-PS 31 24 524 describes a ram boring machine in which the chisel is resiliently biased into a front end position in which it is not hit by the percussion piston. If the chisel has no or only one offers low resistance, the impact energy is therefore transmitted directly to the housing, and only when the chisel hits an obstacle and is pushed back into the housing, it is hit by the percussion piston, so that the obstacle is smashed. With this arrangement, damaging empty blows are avoided, but here too, part of the impact energy is consumed by the spring, since the housing has to be accelerated against the spring force to the front when the chisel in the front end position hits an obstacle. In addition, in loose soil, where the housing is only slightly supported in the ground, there is a risk that the housing will be pushed back by the chisel and the preloaded spring.
- the invention has for its object to provide a ram boring machine of the type mentioned, in which less energy losses occur when transmitting the impact energy to the chisel and in which the chisel can be transferred to a defined end position after the impact.
- the pressure used to drive the percussion piston in the reverse direction is thus also used to reset the chisel. Since this pressure builds up only at the beginning of the backward stroke of the percussion piston, no corresponding counterpressure need be overcome during the forward stroke of the percussion piston, so that the impact energy can be transmitted to the chisel unabated.
- the return piston is preferably arranged in a return chamber which receives the pneumatic or hydraulic pressure in such a way that it returns the chisel to its rearward end position.
- the rear end face of the reset piston can also be pressurized, so that the chisel is pushed forward and is not acted upon by the percussion piston, as long as the soil provides only a slight resistance to the chisel.
- the chisel does not have to be supported by a spring, the chisel can execute a rotational movement in relation to the housing.
- the chisel tip is profiled in such a way that the chisel twists slightly when it penetrates into the ground. This improves the chipping behavior of the chisel and increases the directional stability of the ram boring machine.

As soon as these radial channels slide over the rear end of the control sleeve, the pressure in the front drive pressure chamber 5 can relax via the channels 22, 20 of the percussion piston and the axial air channels 21 of the end piece 15, so that the percussion piston through the in the rear drive pressure chamber 16 prevailing pressure is driven forward again. At the end of the forward stroke, the percussion piston 2 hits the rear end face 13 of the chisel 14 without braking so that the chisel is driven into the ground.

- the space between the reset piston 3 and the partition 23 is vented through a bore 8 in the housing 1.
- the reset chamber 6 is connected to the front drive pressure chamber 5 via a radial bore 4 and an axial bore 4 ⁇ of the chisel.
- the chisel acted upon by the percussion piston 2 moves only a relatively short distance in relation to the housing, so that the transverse bore 4 remains within the reset chamber 6.
- the pressure prevailing during the backward stroke of the percussion piston 2 in the front drive pressure chamber 5 therefore spreads via the axial channel 4 ⁇ and the radial channel 4 into the reset chamber 6. Since the effective area of the reset piston 3 facing the reset chamber 6 is larger than the rear end face 13 of the chisel exposed to the front drive chamber 5, the chisel is pneumatically returned to the rear end position shown in FIGS the front end face 9 of the end wall 11 strikes.
- the chisel can be driven further into the ground, so that the striking piston 2 has its front end on the rear end face 25 of the partition 23 beats. In this way, part of the impact energy is used to propel the housing.
- the chisel is not hit by the percussion piston 2 in the front end position, so that the entire impact energy is available to propel the housing. Only when the chisel 14 again meets stronger opposition and is pushed back into the housing 1, does the transverse bore 4 again come into fluid communication with the reset chamber 6, so that the chisel is transferred back to the rear end position when the impact piston is moved backwards.
