Definitions
- the present invention relates to equipment employing endless sheets of thin material such as printing units for computers, plotters and equipment for manufacturing signs, the endless sheet of thin material, which may have been manufactured either from paper, film, self-adhesive vinyl or from any other suitable material, being pulled in a direction which corresponds to its longitudinal axis through the equipment by means of one or more pairs of sprocket wheels, the sprockets of which engage in small holes which are provided along the two longitudinal edges of the endless sheets of thin material.
- the present invention relates more in particular to endless sheets of thin material for such equipment and to the sprocket wheels which engage therewith.
- tractor feed a tractor forming the entity consisting of a sprocket wheel with its drive.
- Such a tractor feed may, however, present problems, especially if a relatively heavy material such as, inter alia, self-adhesive vinyl is used if the material has to be pulled backwards and forwards in the equipment with great precision or if the material is stretched between two pairs of sprocket wheels by means of said sprocket wheels in its longitudinal and width direction.
- a relatively heavy material such as, inter alia, self-adhesive vinyl
- the object of the invention is to provide a simple solution for the abovementioned problem.
- the invention can be used in all equipment with tractor feed, it is very suitable for equipment for manufacturing signs.
- Such equipment is generally fitted with a stylus or cutting head which can be moved with a great precision over the width direction of the material.
- a sign By combining a controlled movement of the material and a con- trotted movement of the stylus or cutting head, a sign, the outline of which is the resultant of the two movements, is traced out on the material.
- a number of types of said equipment make use of two pairs of tractors for the movement of the material with a supporting roller situated between them. The material passes over the supporting roller which acts as a base for the stylus or cutting head. In this arrangement the material is, as it were, stretched between the two tractor pairs and between the tractors of each tractor pair mutually in order to pass it over the supporting roller in a flat and stretched form.
- the small holes of endless sheets of thin material have a centre-to-centre distance of half an inch, and the small sprockets of each sprocket wheel are distributed over the circumference of each sprocket wheel with a distribution corresponding thereto.
- the endless sheets of thin material and the associated sprocket wheels for tractor feeding according to the invention are characterized by the centre-to-centre distance of the small holes along the Longitudinal edge of the endless sheets of thin material, a centre-to-centre distance which is less than 1/2 inch, and by the distribution of the small sprockets over the circumference of the sprocket wheels, distribution which corresponds to that of the small holes in the endless sheets of thin material.
- the centre-to-centre distance of the small holes along the longitudinal edge of the endless sheets of thin material is 1/4 inch.
- Endless standard sheets of thin material are provided along their longitudinal edge with small holes (1) whose centre-to-centre distance A is always equal to 1/2 inch.
- the sprocket wheels (2) (figure 2a) of a standard tractor feed are provided with small sprockets (3) which are distributed over the circumference of the sprocket wheel (2) in a manner such that they can engage with small holes (1) of standard endless sheets of thin material for the advance movement thereof.
- Endless sheets of thin material according to the invention are provided along their longitudinal edge with small holes (4) whose centre-to-centre distance B is less than 1/2 inch.
- the small sprockets (5) on the sprocket wheels (6) (figures 2b and 3) for tractor feeding according to the invention are therefore more closely distributed over the circumference of the sprocket wheel (6) and, in particular, in such a manner that they can engage with the small holes (4) (figure 1b) of the endless sheets of thin material according to the invention.
- the centre-to-centre distance B (figure 1b) is 1/4 inch.
- This distribution of the small holes (4) permits the diameter of the small holes to be kept equal to that of the small holes (1) (figure 2a) of standard endless sheets of thin material, while the intervening distance C (figure 1b) between two small holes (4) is still sufficient.
- An incidental advantage is then that the endless sheets of thin material according to the invention with a centre-to-centre distance of 1/4 inch can also be processed by equipment with standard tractors.
- FIG. 4 shows sprocket wheels (6) according to the invention, installed in an equipment for the manufacture of signs, which further consists of a supporting roller (7) which is provided with a guide roller (8) on both sides and a cutting head (9) which is able to carry out a controlled movement in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis (10) of the supporting roller (7).
- a pair of sprocket wheels (6) according to the invention On either side of the supporting roller (10) there is installed a pair of sprocket wheels (6) according to the invention.
- the sprocket wheels (6) of each pair are situated in line with each other at both sides of the endless sheet of thin material (11) according to the invention in a manner such that the small sprockets (5) are level with the small holes (4).
- Two tractors which are situated on the same side of the equipment are movable along the width in order to make it possible to process different widths of endless sheets of thin material.
- the sprocket wheels (6) acquire a controlled rotary movement which moves the endless sheet of thin ma- t erial (11) backwards and forwards alonq its lonoitudinal axis and which ensures that the endless sheet of thin material (11) remainsflat and stretched between the two pairs of sprocket wheels (6).
- An incidental advantage of the invention is that the edge of endless sheets of thin material manufactured from relatively rigid material becomes more flexible as a result of the increased number of small holes so that the endless sheets of thin material can be bent further round the tractor or may follow the circumference of the tractors for a longer distance, as a result of which the force transfer is spread over a still greater number of small holes.
- the present invention is not limited to sheet material provided with rows of small holes with an identical diameter, nor to sprocket wheels with sprockets with an identical diameter.
- a row of holes could for example comprise two kinds of holes with a different diameter and spread according to a repeated pattern. the sprockets of the matching wheels then have the same alternation of diameter.
