Definitions
- the invention is directed to a weather-resistant copper alloy of the type specified in the preamble of claim 1.
- Normal components of the atmosphere can be significant corrosion factors, such as chloride particles contained in air in the coastal area or the relative humidity and in particular pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia or amines in urban or industrial areas.
- pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia or amines in urban or industrial areas.
- wet corrosion is of great importance and occurs in connection with rain.
- Rain itself has a favorable effect on the weather resistance of copper, because it leads to an accelerated formation of a protective layer and washes away dust, soot and acidic compounds.
- copper is subject to the so-called patina formation, a natural protective layer that separates the copper from the direct effects of the weather. Due to the increasing environmental pollution caused by various types of pollutants, air pollution has resulted in what is known as “acid rain”.
- the roof water and the atmosphere develop an acidity, eg «thin acid» from HCI + H 2 S0 4 , which is stronger than the tendency of copper to form soluble compounds.
- the patina which is initially thin in new roofs, is destroyed in a punctiform manner because the patina-forming substances, such as C U S0 4 and C U C0 3 , are no longer stable under the influence of thin acid.
- the invention has set itself the task of creating a weather-resistant copper alloy that has an increased resistance to corrosion, the alloy should be relatively inexpensive and the hot and cold deformation properties should correspond to those of the known P-deoxidized copper.
- the stationary current density-potential curves provide information about the long-term behavior of an electrochemical system in the investigated potential range.
- the steepness of the transition of the current density from the cathodic to the anodic area when passing through the resting potential is of interest, furthermore selective signs of dissolution of the working electrode in the active area, furthermore the position of a passive area, signs of breakthrough of the passive layer and finally processes in the transport passive area up to Gas evolution at the working electrode.
- the rest potential increases in accordance with the theory with the dilution.
- the current density remains at the value “0” up to about 200 mV potential, based on the hydrogen normal electrode. This is confirmed phenomenologically: The sample surface retains its appearance up to this point; no gas evolution or change in the electrolyte is observed.
- the components must correspond to the pollutants found in the atmosphere.
- the pH should be the same as the average acidity of precipitation in Central Europe.
- the individual ions in artificial rainwater are supposed to represent the conditions that actually occur in natural precipitation. The increase in concentration in the artificial rainwater used must not falsify the test results in short-term corrosion tests.
- the proportions of free anions (sulfate, nitrate, chloride) and the NHa content for corrosion of the alloy are of particular importance.
- concentration of the artificial rainwater used was increased compared to the natural “acidic” rain.
- the factor 10 2 was aimed for. According to the usual view, this value is still below the permissible concentration increase in short-term corrosion tests.
- Corrosion tests in synthetic gas atmospheres gave practical results at 10 2 to 5 ⁇ 1 0 2 concentrations.
- the artificial rainwater was generated with N 1 solutions H 2 S0 4 , HN0 3 , HCI and NH 4 0H. As already mentioned, the pH was 3.7.
- the E-copper has a quiescent potential of approximately 20 mV and the conventional roof copper is still below 50 mV
- the quiescent potentials of the copper alloys according to the invention are in a range above 150 mV within the cross-hatched field in the figure, which significantly improves the Resistance to corrosion clearly illustrated.
- copper alloys are obtained which are optimized with regard to their corrosion resistance. They are in the above-mentioned cross-hatched field in the attached drawing in the uppermost area, with a resting potential of 200 mV.
- the copper alloy according to the invention is mainly used in outdoor applications in house building, namely for facade cladding, roof coverings, gutters, roof pipes, window sills, door sills and the like.
- Another area of application is vehicle construction, and there first the construction of coolers.
- coolers For example, copper fins are used as heat exchangers when building coolers in vehicles.
- cables that are also heavily exposed to the weather and grit.
- the use of the alloy according to the invention is advantageous wherever copper materials are exposed to strong weather conditions.
