- the present invention relates to a knitting machine comprising at least one needle bed in the grooves of which are housed sliding needles having at least one heel capable of occupying two levels relative to the plane of the needle bed, one in which the heel can be driven by the cams of the cam holder and the other in which the heel is out of the path of these cams, means for acting on said heels to put them in the positions corresponding to these two levels, one of these means being constituted by a cam pushing the heels back into their low level, and keys associated with each needle to bring them into the working position, in which they can be driven by the working cams.
- the needles are provided with an elastic extension in the form of a hairpin, which may or may not come in one piece with the needle itself.
- the end of this pin carries the heel of the needle.

- the bottom of the groove 2 has a first part 8, at the hook 4 of the needle, corresponding to the usual bottom of such a groove, this first part 8 being followed by a first shallow depression 9 of uniform depth with the exception of the part which connects it to part 8, this first depression 9 being followed by a second depression 10, deeper at the heel 5 of the needle.
- This second depression 10 can be machined in each groove 2 or alternatively be made up of a single countersink extending over the entire length of the needle bed.
- the needle 3 for its part, has a clearance 14 over a part of its length, consisting of a narrowing of its height, so that the lower edge of the needle, constituting said clearance, is oblique relative to the two sides 15 and 16 rectilinear and parallel with a conventional needle.
- This clearance 14 extends in the direction of the heel 5 to an oblique bent part 17 connecting the body of the needle 3 to the heel 5.
- the lower edge of this part 17 is substantially parallel to the ramp 18 which connects the depressions 9 and 10 from the groove.
- the lower part 19 of the connection between the heel 5 and the body of the needle constitutes a sliding shoe.
- the non-rectilinear connection between the heel and the body of the needle provides a certain elasticity, sought after, damping the transmission to the hook 4 of shocks on the heel 5.
- the heel 5 has, on the side of the key 7, at the level of the body of the needle, an oblique ramp 20 lying below a portion 21 perpendicular to the plane of the needle bed.
