Description
- L'invention a pour objet un procédé de traitement par conversion chimique, en des temps très courts, notamment inférieurs à 30 secondes, de substrats en zinc ou en l'un de ses alliages.
- Elle vise également un concentré et un bain utilisés pour la mise en oeuvre de ce procédé.
- L'invention s'applique essentiellement mais non exclusivement à la phosphatation des bandes d'acier zingué en continu ; elle permet en effet, comme déjà indiqué, des temps de traitement très courts inférieurs même à 10 secondes, précisément exigés par l'industrie des bandes zinguées en continu.
- Les traitements de substrats, c'est-à-dire d'articles en zinc ou en l'un de ses alliages, par conversion chimique, c'est-à-dire par phosphatation au zinc, visent à améliorer la résistance à la corrosion de ces substrats ainsi que l'adhérence des peintures.
- Il est connu que ces traitements comprennent, de façon classique, plusieurs étapes successives, à savoir :
- 1) une étape de dégraissage alcalin,
- 2) un ou plusieurs rinçages à l'eau,
- 3) une étape de préactivation à l'aide de sels de titane,
- 4) l'étape de phosphatation proprement dite,
- 5) un ou plusieurs rinçages à l'eau,
- 6) un rinçage passivant chromique,
- 7) une étape de séchage,
- Les étapes de dégraissage alcalin et rinçage à l'eau peuvent être omises dans le cas où il s'agit de traiter des bandes d'acier zingué sortant du zingage et qui sont propres.
- Il est également connu que, classiquement, les bains de phosphatation au zinc comprennent :
- de 0,3 à 10 g/1 de Zn2+
- de 5 à 50 g/I de P04 3---
- de 1 à 40 g/l de NO3―
- de 0,1 à 4 g/l de Ni2+
- de 0,1 à 3 g/I de F-.
- Ces bains peuvent contenir des agents destinés à diminuer les poids de couche, tels que l'acide lactique, l'acide tartrique ou le phosphate d'amidon à des concentrations pouvant aller jusqu'à 5 g/I.
- Ils peuvent également contenir des agents accélérateurs tels que les ions ClO3 ―, dont la teneur peut atteindre 5 g/l.
- Lorsque, par mise en oeuvre de ces procédés et bains connus, on obtient
- - des poids de couche supérieurs à 1,5 g/m2, le revêtement déposé est à cristaux denses, mais possède de mauvaises propriétés pour ce qui est de l'adhérence de la peinture ultérieurement appliquée, un écaillage de la peinture se produisant si les articles revêtus et peints sont soumis à des déformations,
- - des poids de couche inférieurs à 1,5 g/m2, les cristaux deviennent peu denses, et la conversion chimique obtenue conduit à des revêtements hétérogènes, laissant par endroit le métal à nu, d'où une résistance à la corrosion diminuée.
- L'invention a pour but, surtout, de remédier aux inconvénients de l'art antérieur et de fournir un procédé permettant d'obtenir, sur des substrats en zinc ou en l'un de ses alliages, notamment sur des bandes d'acier zingué, en des temps très courts, notamment inférieurs à environ 10 secondes, un revêtement de cristaux fins et denses, avec des poids de couche, de phosphates déposés, inférieurs ou égaux à 1 g/m2, lesdits revêtements favorisant l'adhérence des peintures.
- Or, la Société Demanderesse a trouvé que ce but pouvait être atteint en ajoutant, dans un bain de phosphatation de composition classique, des ions Fe2+, en une quantité 0,3 à 2 g/l, ce bain contenant en outre de 0,2 à 1,5 g/I, de préférence de 0,2 à 1,2 g/I d'ions Zn2+ et de 0,3 à 2 g/I, de préférence de 0,3 à 1,2 gll, d'ions Ni2+, les rapports pondéraux
- Il s'ensuit que le procédé conforme à l'invention est caractérisé par le fait que le bain mis en œuvre lors de l'étape de phosphatation proprement dite, comporte une proportion de 0,3 à 2 g/I d'ions Fe2-, de 0,2 à 1,5 g/I d'ions Zn2- et de 0,3 à 2 g/I d'ions Ni2―, le rapport pondéral

- Pour des concentrations en Fe2+ du bain de phosphatation conforme à l'invention, inférieures à 0,3 g/I, il n'y a plus d'effet bénéfique et, dans le cas où la concentration est supérieure à 2 g/l, le revêtement devient poudreux et non adhérent.
- Les proportions des autres constituants, classiques, du bain de phosphatation sont les suivantes :
- de 5 à 20 g/I de PO4 3―
- de 2 à 12 g/1 de NO3― .
- Le pH du bain de phosphatation est ajusté à une valeur comprise entre 2 et 3 à l'aide d'un alcali, comme par exemple la soude caustique.
- Lorsque le rapport pondéral Zn/Ni est supérieur à 5, le recouvrement de la phosphatation devient insuffisant ; pour les temps très courts inférieurs à 10 secondes, il est préférable de maintenir ce rapport inférieur à 2. Pour des valeurs de ce rapport inférieures à 0,1, on ne note plus d'amélioration et il n'est pas justifié économiquement d'utiliser ces taux en nickel proportionnellement trop élevés ; dans la pratique, l'amélioration notée pour des valeurs dudit rapport inférieures à 0,4 n'est pas assez sensible pour justifier un surcroît en nickel.
- Lorsque le rapport pondéral Zn/Fe est supérieur à 5, les effets bénéfiques du fer disparaissent et le bain se comporte comme un bain classique exempt de fer ; pour des temps de traitement très courts, inférieurs à 10 secondes, il est préférable de travailler à un rapport maximum de 4 pour éviter les aléas et assurer la meilleure constance possible du traitement. Pour des valeurs inférieures à 0,1 du rapport Zn/Fe, le revêtement devient poudreux et non adhérent ; la constance des résultats pour des temps inférieurs à 10 secondes implique de travailler de préférence à un rapport Zn/Fe supérieur à 0,25.
- Etant donné le caractère très oxydable des ions Fe2+ qui, au contact de l'air, peuvent se transformer en ions Fe3+, conduisant à la formation de boues insolubles de phosphates ferriques, on ajoute de préférence une quantité suffisante d'un agent réducteur des ions Fe3+ tel que l'acide ascorbique, l'acide oxalique ou tout autre réducteur connu des ions Fe3+, notamment dans des proportions stoechiométri- ques, ce qui, dans le cas de l'acide ascorbique, correspond à une concentration de 0,5 à 3 g/I.
- Le concentré, conforme à l'invention, comporte à l'état concentré, dans deux récipients séparés mais réunis de préférence sous la forme de ce qu'on appelle généralement un « kit de traitement,
- - en ce qui concerne le premier récipient, les constituants classiques,
- - en ce qui concerne le second récipient, le fer ferreux, par exemple sous forme de phosphate dans de l'acide phosphorique, éventuellement en présence d'un agent réducteur en raison du caractère très oxydable du fer ferreux indiqué plus haut.
- Le zinc est apporté sous la forme, par exemple, d'oxyde ou de carbonate, par exemple en solution dans l'acide phosphorique concentré.
- Le nickel peut être apporté sous forme d'oxyde ou de nitrate, le nitrate lui-même provenant, par exemple, de l'acide nitrique ou d'un nitrate alcalin tel que NaN03.
- A titre d'exemple de concentré, on peut retenir la composition suivante :

- Pour obtenir, dans ce bain, une concentration en fer ferreux de 1 g/l, on y ajoute une quantité du contenu du second récipient correspondant à 13 g/I de bain, ce qui fait passer, par ailleurs, la concentration du bain final à PO4 3― à 10 g/l.
- Le rapport pondéral Zn/Fe est de 0,36.
- Le réducteur constitué, par exemple, par l'acide ascorbique, est ajouté à part.
- Comme déjà indiqué plus haut, ce bain de phosphatation est applicable au jet ou au trempé ; les temps de contact varient de 1 à 10 secondes et les températures de 40 à 70 °C.
- Pour obtenir un revêtement cristallin de finesse maximum, on ajoute des agents affineurs tels que les acides lactique, tartrique, citrique ou gluconique dans des proportions variant de 0,5 à 5 g/l.
- Dans les exemples qui suivent et qui illustrent des modes de réalisation avantageux de l'invention, on soumet des pièces zinguées, notamment des plaquettes, à la séquence de traitements indiquée ci-après dans laquelle toutes les étapes, sauf l'étape de phosphatation proprement dite, sont constantes.
- La séquence de traitements en question comporte les étapes suivantes :
- a) une étape de dégraissage alcalin par aspersion sous une pression de 1,5 kg/cm2 et à une température de 60 °C pendant 8 secondes, à l'aide d'un produit dégraissant alcalin usuel ; on peut avoir recours à celui qui est commercialisé par la Société Demanderesse sous la marque de fabrique « RIDOLINE 1089 » ; il est amené à une concentration de 8 g/l ;
- b) une étape d'un ou plusieurs rinçages à l'eau tiède par aspersion ;
- c) une étape de préactivation à l'aide de sels de titane colloïdaux tels que ceux commercialisés par la Société Demanderesse sous la marque « FIXODINE 5 » ; on travaille à la concentration de 1 g/l, à la température ambiante, par aspersion, maintenue pendant 3 secondes ;
- d) l'étape de phosphatation proprement dite, au jet ou au trempé, avec différents bains décrits ci-après ;
- e) une étape d'un ou plusieurs rinçages à l'eau à température ambiante ;
- f) une étape de rinçage final passivant à l'aide d'un mélange de sels de chrome hexavalent et de chrome trivalent ; on peut utiliser le produit commercialisé par la Société Demanderesse sous la marque « DEOXYLYTE 41 » qui est utilisé à 0,3 % en volume, à 40 °C ;
- g) une étape de séchage.
- Les plaquettes ainsi traitées sont ensuite examinées au microscope à balayage électronique (grossissement 1 500) ; puis il est procédé à une mesure du poids de couche.
- Cette mesure est effectuée de la matière exposée ci-après.
- Les plaquettes traitées sont séchées et pesées, ce qui donne un poids P1 (en grammes).
- Elles sont ensuite décapées.
- Pour ce faire, on peut les plonger pendant 5 minutes dans un bain, à température ambiante, comportant 10 g/I de bichromate d'ammonium dans une solution d'ammoniaque à 28° Baumé (33,3 % de NH3).
- On rince les plaquettes décapées, on les sèche et on les pèse, ce qui donne un poids P2 (en grammes).
-
- En rapport avec les exemples, on montre, sur les figures 1 à 6 ci-annexées, les images des surfaces traitées telles qu'obtenues au microscope à balayage au grossissement 1 500.
- Des plaquettes d'acier galvanisé à fleurage minimisé Skin passé (acier galvanisé répondant aux normes de l'industrie automobile et ayant été traité par les voies mécanique et chimique pour présenter une surface lisse à cristaux de zinc de taille réduite), sont soumises à la séquence de traitements susindiquée, le bain de phosphatation selon l'invention ayant la composition suivante :
- Le poids de couche obtenu est de 0,85 g/m2 et la structure cristallographique de cette couche, illustrée par la figure 1, montre que les cristaux sont fins et denses, avec un taux de recouvrement de 90%.
- Les mêmes plaquettes que celles utilisées dans l'exemple 1 sont soumises à une séquence de traitement comportant une étape de phosphatation proprement dite avec mise en oeuvre d'un bain de phosphatation selon l'invention ayant la composition suivante :
- Le poids de couche obtenu est de 1 g/m2. La structure cristallographique, examinée comme indiqué plus haut et illustrée par la figure 2, montre que le revêtement est à cristaux très fins et denses, avec un taux de recouvrement de 90 à 95 %.
- Des plaquettes d'acier électrozingué sont soumises à une séquence comportant le bain de phosphatation de l'exemple 1, les paramètres étant identiques, excepté la température qui est égale à 45 °C.
- Le poids de couche est, cette fois-ci, de 0,95 g/m2. La structure cristallographique, illustrée par la photographie de la figure 3, est à cristaux très fins et denses, avec un taux de recouvrement de 85 à 90 %.
- Des plaquettes en alliage fer-zinc comportant environ 10% de fer tel que, par exemple, l'alliage commercialisé sous la marque « MONOGAL (USINOR), sont soumises à une séquence de traitement comportant le bain de phosphatation de l'exemple 1 ; les paramètres restent les mêmes, excepté la température fixée à 53 °C et le temps de traitement qui, cette fois-ci, est égal à 10 secondes.
- Le poids de couche est de 1,25 g/m2.
- La structure cristallographique (figure 4) montre des cristaux fins et denses avec un taux de recouvrement de 90 %.
- Il s'agit d'un exemple comparatif.

- Le pH est ajusté à environ 2,3 avec de la soude caustique. La température est de 55 à 60 °C.
- Le temps d'application est de 6 secondes, par immersion.
- Le poids de couche est de 1,1 g/m2.
- La structure cristallographique est caractérisée par des cristaux grossiers dont le taux de recouvrement est de 90 %.
- Il s'agit d'un autre exemple comparatif.

- Le pH est ajusté à environ 2,3 avec de la soude caustique. La température est de 60 °C et le temps d'application est de 6 secondes, par immersion.
- Le poids de couche est de 1,3 g/m2.
- La structure cristallographique est caractérisée par des cristaux grossiers dont le taux de recouvrement est de 60 %.
- En traitant, dans le cas des exemples 5 et 6, des tôles en « MONOGAL ou en acier électrozingué, on réalise une phosphatation grossière hétérogène et à des poids de couche très supérieurs à 1,5 g/m2.
