- the folding is generally done by moving the boxes along an endless conveyor (belts, chains, etc ...) holding the central part of the blank firmly between the two folding lines thereof, the extreme panels supported by inclined bars which force them to rise or lower depending on whether the folding takes place from above or from below.
- the extreme panels are thus brought vertically, and they are then generally taken up by other bars which end the folding flat.
- the present invention aims to provide a solution to the drawbacks of these known devices. It relates to a plate folding machine with which flaps are associated by a folding line of the kind provided with a conveyor of the plates to be folded equipped with means making it possible to advance these plates during the cycle of the general movement of the machine, also provided with lateral push folding elements at least part of which consists of at least one endless strand associated with pusher cleats placed along said endless strand in correspondence with the successive plates on the conveyor, said endless strand also equipped with means allowing it to advance to the cycle of the machine is characterized in that the endless strand carries directly pusher cleats whose bearing face is in alignment with the fold line.
- the endless strand which directly carries pusher cleats of rounded shape is straight and its two return pulleys have axes parallel to the starting position of the flaps of the plates, the axes of said pulleys on either side of the fold line.
- the cardboard blanks are introduced into the machine in the form of pla ques 1 lined with two longitudinal marks 2, 3, obtained previously by crushing, or "pushing back", of the cardboard. These marks form hinges around which the flaps 5 and 6 will be folded.
- the folding is carried out by longitudinal displacement of the blank 1 along the folder.
- the meeting of the flaps 5, 6, with folding elements. constituted here by two twisted bars 7, 8, conventional, causes the rotation of these flaps, around the corresponding hinges 2, 3, respectively 180 degrees to the right and to the left, until the flaps are in superposition with the part central 9 of the blank 1, all of this first part of the device being extremely conventional.
- the blanks 1 are transported through the folder using a conveyor comprising two endless belts 10, 11, pierced with holes 4 regularly distributed in the longitudinal direction, as can be clearly seen in Figure 2.
- the the distance between these holes 4 is adjusted so as to allow their engagement in the corresponding end pulleys upstream 12, 13, and downstream 14, 15, each of said pulleys being consequently provided with fingers 115 regularly distributed.
- Each finger 115 has a pointed shape, although having an upper flat 17, and has lateral profiles 16 substantially in the form of involutes of a circle, as can be seen in FIG. 2.
- the upstream pulleys 12 and 13 are mounted idly, while the downstream pulleys 14 and 15 are integral with a shaft 18 driven in rotation by the general movement of the machine.
- the driving pulleys 14 and 15 thus ensure an advance of the conveyor belts 10 and 11 in the machine cycle
- the holes 4, in combination with the associated fingers 115 allow a permanent refocusing of said belts, permanently correcting their movement despite in particular their fluctuations in length, and thus guaranteeing their perfect cycling.
- the holes 4 also serve as suction orifices making it possible to guarantee the plating of the central part 9 of the blanks 1 on the active parts of the conveyor belts 10 and 11, and therefore to guarantee their advance during the cycle of the machine.
- Under each conveyor belt 10, 11 is therefore placed a suction box, respectively 19 and 20 connected to a vacuum pump by pipes 21 ( Figure 2).
- the folding machine which has just been described has the advantage of guaranteeing the advancement of the plates during the machine cycle.
- it uses conventional folding elements 7, 8 which have the disadvantage, with certain qualities of cardboard, of risking folding the flaps slightly crosswise.

- the folding bars 7 and 8 of FIG. 1 are, in this embodiment, replaced by a set of endless twisted belts 22, each turning at the cycle of the machine around end pulleys 23, 24, driven by the pulleys 12 of the conveyor 10 and carrying, at regular intervals in correspondence with the blanks on the conveyor 10, groups of pusher cleats 25.
- the belts 22 are positioned so that their "go" or active strand is in alignment with the associated hinge 2, and the tabs 25 have such a section it is the same for their bearing face 26.
- the belts 22 are lined with the same holes 4 as the conveyor belts 10 and 11 of Figure 1, and the end pulleys 23 and 24 are likewise lined with fingers of correction 115 identical to those described above with reference to FIG. 2.
- a set of small intermediate pulleys 27 also makes it possible to maintain the belt 22 on the desired twisted path allowing the progressive folding of the flap 5 on the central part 9 of the blank.
- each belt 22 is adjusted by acting on the relative positions of the pulleys 23, 24 and 27.
- the belt 22 folds the flap 5 at an angle of approximately 90 degrees and, consequently, the end pulleys 24 and 23 have the positions shown in FIGS. 4 and 6 respectively.
- the folding takes place gradually as it is clearly seen from the three successive phases shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 4 to 6.
- the folder of Figure 3 has at least a pair of belts 22 upstream of that shown, responsible for performing the folding from 0 to about 90 degrees, as well as, if. necessary, another couple downstream to complete folding 180 °.
- the respective positions of the end pulleys are adjusted according to the desired folding, easily determined, as in the case of FIGS. 4 and 6, so that the upstream pulley ensures, with a cleat 25, the initial folding position, and that the downstream pulley ensures, with a cleat 25, the final folding position.
- FIGS. 7 to 10 show an embodiment close to that of FIG. 3, but using non-twisted belts 221, therefore straight, furnished with pusher cleats 251 with rounded section, in this case semi-circular.
- FIGS. 7, 8, 9 and 10 which correspond respectively to FIGS. 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the previous embodiment, the folding carried out by self-parallel displacement of the upstream return pulleys 241 and downstream 231.
- the end pulleys 241, 231 have their vertical axes and located respectively beyond and below the folding axis 2, therefore on either side of it in the horizontal plane.
- an identical assembly will be placed, but with end pulleys with horizontal axes, located on either side of the axis of folding 2 in the vertical plane.
