Definitions

  • the present invention relates in general to centrifuges in which the product to be centrifuged is placed in plastic tubular containers supported by the rotor of the centrifuges. More particularly, the present invention relates to the caps or plugs used to close the top of these tubular containers.
  • Centrifuges are usually provided with a rotor comprising a series of cavities, usually arranged in a circular fashion, and designed to receive the tubular containers receiving the sample to be centrifuged.
  • the axis line of each cavity is oriented angularly with respect to the vertical axis of rotation of the rotor, so that the bottom of the tubular container is more distant from the axis of the rotor than the top of the container.
  • Rotors with inclined tubular containers are advantageous in that initially the sample or product to be centrifuged is collected at the bottom of the container at a faster rate than when using a container having its longitudinal axis perpendicular to the axis of the rotor.
  • each container is provided with a cap or plug closing the mouth of the container. It is obvious that if the container used in a rotor angle is initially full or almost full, sample leakage occurs from the top of the tubular container, unless the cap provides adequate sealing.
  • the prior art provides numerous solutions for the problems inherent in the difficulties which oppose the possibility of ensuring effective obturation.
  • Many of these prior devices include multiple elements which must be assembled around the mouth of the centrifugal container, these elements being usually three in number. These multiple elements are necessary due to the non-uniform stresses applied to the container when it is used in an inclined centrifugal rotor.
  • the three components usually include a central plug, an annular seal and a ring.
  • the central stopper is designed to penetrate to a certain degree into the mouth of the container; given that this plug has an edge facing outward and radially with respect to the mouth, it bears on an annular seal placed on the edge of the mouth.
  • the annular ring which is screwed female onto the mouth of the container constitutes the means for compressing said edge or rim of the cap against the annular seal.
  • the present invention overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks and provides a tight and effective closure for a tubular container forming a bottle intended to be used in a centrifuge, this closure eliminating some of the handling operations that are encountered in prior devices.
  • the obturation is carried out by means of only two elements mounted one inside the other for ease of use.
  • the shuttering means has the overall appearance of a hat with an integral external skirt extending downward, comprising a female thread intended to cooperate with a corresponding male thread established on the neck.
  • a centrifugal container Concentrically and centrally with respect to the cap, there is provided another internal integral element extending in the direction of the bottom which penetrates with a certain ease of adjustment over a short distance into the mouth of the container.
  • a groove is provided between the outer skirt and said inner member, and is intended and constructed to retain an annular seal. The annular seal, when the plug is properly applied, has its part facing downwards abutting against the edge normally facing upwards of the container, and is compressed on this edge as and when screw the cap.
  • the container according to the present invention is shown in Figure 1 and referenced at 10 as a whole.
  • the same elements are designated by identical references in all the figures.
  • rounded bottom 12 intended to be placed in a housing of complementary shape provided in a centrifuge of conventional type (not shown).
  • the bottle 11 can be for example and not limited to a polymeric material, such as a polycarbonate. It is desirable that its outside diameter be chosen so as to easily adjust in the cavity of a centrifuge.
  • the bottle 11 is provided with a relatively wide mouth 13 which provides direct access to the interior of the bottle from the top.
  • the mouth 13 ends with an annular surface 14 oriented upwards.
  • the neck 15 of the bottle below the annular surface 14 is provided externally with a male thread 16. It should be noted that the neck 15 is of a somewhat smaller diameter than the main body part 17 of the bottle .
  • An annular shoulder portion 18 connects the aforementioned neck 15 to the main body portion 17 of the bottle.
  • a cap 21 is adapted and designed to be screwed onto the thread of the neck of the bottle.
  • This cap has an annular outer skirt 22 having a thread 23 provided to cooperate with the male thread 16 established on the neck of the bottle.
  • the cap also includes a second skirt 24 extending in the direction of the bottom and having a somewhat smaller diameter, thus defining a groove 25 between the inner surface of the large diameter skirt 22 and the outer cylindrical surface of the small skirt diameter 24.
  • the annular groove 25 has a rounded end surface with an arcuate profile provided so as to match part of the arcuate surface of an annular seal 30 positioned in the annular groove, as illustrated in FIG. 2 in particular.
  • the opposite arcuate surface is flattened against the upwardly facing annular surface 14 when the cap is screwed onto the neck of the bottle.
  • the groove 25 being of a size allowing it to receive with an ease of adjustment the annular seal, we can discern a small annular shoulder 31 established between the groove 25 and the integral-exterior skirt extending downward. 22.
  • the thickness rating of the part of the neck of the bottle having the annular surface oriented in the direction of the top 14 is provided so that this part fits in a part of the groove, in thus retaining permanently the annular seal.
  • the thickness at the mouth is slightly greater than the overall thickness of the neck. It has been found that it is effective to ensure that the annular seal is retained securely captive when compression occurs.
  • the skirt 24, together with the underside of the cap defines a configuration in the form of an integral bowl extending in the direction of the bottom.
  • the fact that the said bowl-like configuration is massive falls within the aims and characteristics of the present invention.
  • the upper part of the hat has an elongated ear 41 extending in the upward direction.
  • This ear is intended to provide a means of assistance for screwing and unscrewing the hat as desired. It is also useful for removing a corked bottle from the centrifuge cavity, since it is a practical means of gripping.
  • the outside diameter of the skirt 22 of the hat is identical to the outside diameter of the bottle. In this way, the wall of the centrifuge cavity provides a support surface for both the cap and the bottle.
  • Figure 4 clearly shows the characteristic aspect of another embodiment of the hat, falling within the scope of the present invention.
  • the upper surface of the cap of this embodiment has a depression 51.
  • an ear 52 is produced which comes to be flush with its upper part, the top surface 53 of the cap.
  • the vacuum allows positioning of the fingers of the hand on either side of the ear, the bottle thus being able to be removed by its cap from the cavity of a centrifuge.
  • the extraction is carried out using hemostatic forceps or clockwork forceps.
  • edge portion 55 of the hat is annularly beveled as in the first embodiment.
  • the cap or cap according to the present invention can also be made of polycarbonate. It has been found that this polymeric material is particularly useful. Other materials or materials known or not in the trade can prove to be just as useful. Consequently, the invention is not limited to manufacture with polycarbonate.
  • the one-piece cap according to the present invention provides a rigid support for the annular seal, and therefore eliminates the need to handle an insert.
  • the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application any more than to those of the embodiments of its various parts which have been more particularly indicated; on the contrary, it embraces all its variants.
