- the invention relates to a display device for displaying bright characters in a dark environment, in particular liquid crystal display, with a medium that can be switched between two optically different states between two mutually parallel carrier plates, with a fixing layer applied to one of the mutually facing carrier plate surfaces and containing spacer elements through which the carrier plates are held at a certain distance from one another and with a polarizer assigned to each carrier plate.
- the fixing layer completely covers the carrier plate and the spacer elements consist of a material of dark color.
- the fact that the fixing layer completely covers the carrier plate ensures a uniform spacing of the carrier plates from one another over their entire surface.
- the dark spacer elements in the object of the invention absorb this light. In this way, the surroundings of the characters remain deeply dark and create a strong contrast between themselves and the bright characters.
- the spacer elements can be dark blue or brown or black.
- the spacing elements are preferably at a greater distance from one another than their diameter.

- the spacer elements 7 can have any other suitable shape in addition to the spherical shape. It has been found that rod-shaped spacer elements can be processed easily and are therefore particularly advantageously applicable to the subject matter of the invention.
