- the present invention overcomes this drawback by providing an improved device, of the kind defined above, in which the drive means of the two clamps of each pair are arranged so as to move, in a first phase, a single clamp up to that the piece of laundry is stretched, and then simultaneously move the two clamps, in a second phase, until bringing them in a symmetrical position relative to the centering axis under the control of means detecting the movement of the first clamp and reacting to the tensioning of the piece of laundry.
