Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the equipment used by mountaineers and more particularly to ice crampons which, placed under mountain boots, are used to operate on snow-covered slopes or on walls covered with snow and ice.
  • It relates more particularly to a safety device adaptable to all ice spikes currently on the market as well as a new type of spike equipped with such a device.
  • the existing studs consist essentially of a metal frame, formed of two elementary frames, one for the front of the shoe, the other for the heel, connected by at least one adjustment system. long enough to adapt the crampon to the shoe size.
  • Each of these elementary frames is provided with attachment tabs making it possible to fix the crampon on the shoe by means of belts or straps, and, at its lower part, teeth in variable number which are planted in snow or ice during the mountaineer's progress.
  • the present invention aims to avoid these very serious faults in a simple, very effective manner and, in general, relates to a safety device which prevents snow from filling the space between the points, this device being constituted essentially of a sheet placed under the frame of the studs, facing the snow, this sheet being suitable, either by its own nature, or by various suitable fixing means which will be seen in more detail in the following description, to be able to deform or move slightly, elastically, in all directions (length, width and thickness) when the user is walking.
  • the sheet according to the invention placed under the crampon frame makes it possible to avoid mechanical catching on the sole and on the adjustment system. Forming a screen between the metal parts of the crampon in contact with the sole and the snow, it avoids "thermal" attachment. Offering snow that wants to settle in the space between the points a moving base, deformable in all directions (length, width and thickness), it also prevents snow from settling vertically and this has the consequence of eliminating mechanical attachment between the points.
  • the presence of the sheet according to the invention also provides a certain thermal insulation for the feet of the user thus ensuring better protection against the cold.
  • FIG. 1 illustrates, in perspective, a traditional ice cream clamp not equipped with a device according to the invention.
  • a crampon essentially consists of a metal frame formed by two elementary frames 1, 2.
  • the elementary frame 1 receives the front of the shoe while the elementary frame 2 receives the heel.
  • These two elementary frames are connected by a length adjustment system3 which makes it possible to adapt the crampon to the toe of the shoe that we want to equip.
  • Each elementary frame 1, 2 comprises, upwards, attachment tabs 4 used for the lateral immobilization of the shoe and which has rings 5 in which pass the belts or straps which will secure the crampon under the sole of the shoe.
  • Points 6, directed downwards, in variable numbers depending on the crampon model, are provided on the elementary frames 1, 2 and are intended to be planted in snow or ice. Furthermore, points 7 disposed at the front of the crampon are used for progression on very steep slopes, the mountaineer then facing slopes to climb.
  • the safety device for ice crampon is in the form of a sheet 10, arranged under the frame 1, 2 of the crampon, extending at least between the lateral points 6, advantageously over the entire length of said crampon, forming a screen between the snow and the metal parts of the crampon in contact with the sole of the shoe.
  • said sheet 10 is able, either by its own structure, or thanks to the fixing means allowing it to be fixed to the crampon, to deform or to move slightly, elastically, in all directions (length, width and thickness) when walking of the user.
  • the sheet 10 located under the frame 1, 2 of the stud is formed by an elastic material in itself such as for example a sheet of a material known as "Neoprene having a thickness of about 2 millimeters.
  • This sheet 10 is connected to the clamp by means of a plurality of lateral hooks 11 and end hooks 12.
  • the constituent material forming this sheet 10 being deformable, it is possible to stretch it slightly for the positioning which must be done before the mountaineer puts his shoe in the crampon.
  • the sheet 10 occupies the space between the teeth 6.
  • the figures allows to better specify the location of the sheet below the stud, between the tips 6, 7 of the latter.
  • Figures 4 and 5 show the way in which this sheet 10 is fixed to the frame of the crampon, the fixing being in this embodiment obtained by means of lateral hooks 11, fixed for example by riveting to said sheet 10.
  • the hooks 11 come to fit on the periphery of the frame 1, 2 and perfectly hold the sheet to the latter.
  • the fixing of the hooks 11 on the sheet 10 could be obtained by any means other than riveting, for example by gluing.
  • FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 illustrate a second embodiment according to which the sheet 10 located under the stud is connected to the latter by elastic ears 13 which can either be attached to the sheet 10 or be part of the sheet itself same and therefore made of the same material as this one. Installation is easily done by first placing the ears 13 on the same side and then those on the second side. In this embodiment, either the sheet 10 is crossed by the points 6, 7, the orifices for the passage of the points being made or not in advance, or the sheet 10 bypasses the points 6, 7 in the places where those present themselves.
  • FIG. 9 illustrates a variant of this second embodiment in which the elastic ears described in FIGS.
  • lateral bands 14 attached to the sheet 10 or forming an integral part thereof, said lateral bands 14 coming over the shoe 8 and immobilizing each other by means of a hook 15 disposed on one of said side bands.
  • Other known attachment means can of course replace the hook 15.
  • the sheet 10 is also made of a resistant and elastic material.
  • this sheet 10 comprises a certain number of lateral hooks which will be placed on the edges of the frames 1, 2.
  • the rear end of the sheet is fixed to the back of the frame of the crampon by means of a hook 18 similar to the side hooks 11.
  • the front end of the sheet, the width of which is reduced at this point so as to be able to pass between the two front points 7 of the crampon covers the front part of the shoe 8 whose sole 9 rests on the crampon.
  • the lateral hooks 11 and the hook 18 are placed under the crampon before the installation of the boot 8.
  • the mountaineer takes the front end 16 of the sheet that it stretches and places the hook 17 in the laces 19 of the shoe.
  • FIG. 11 illustrates a fourth embodiment, mode according to which the sheet 10 is fixed, as in the first embodiment, by lateral hooks 11 and end hooks 12.
  • the sheet 10 rests on the at least one stop 20 secured to the frame of the crampon and occupying substantially the width of the latter.
  • This embodiment makes it possible to further promote the ejection of snow thanks to the elasticity of the sheet material. Indeed, at each step, under the weight of the mountaineer, the snow will compress the sheet 10 thus tending to crush it against the sole of the shoe. When the mountaineer raises his foot, the sheet 10, resting on the stops 20, thanks to its elasticity, will tend to return to its original position as shown in FIG. 11 and will eject the snow placed between the points 6.
  • the stops 20 may be integral with the sheet 10 and not the stud itself.
  • the stops 20 it is not going beyond the scope of the invention to produce stops 20 higher or lower than those shown in FIG. 11 or by modifying the shape and the number of such stops.
  • the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above.
  • the sheet to the frame of the crampon by mounting said sheet on a semi-rigid or rigid support which will itself be fixed to the crampon by any known means (rivets, nails, glue, etc.).
  • a very resistant synthetic rubber such as "Neoprene” which has an excellent tear resistance and which moreover retains a substantially constant hardness even at low temperature.
  • the thickness of such a sheet can vary between one and a few millimeters depending on the resistance sought.
  • the tension given to the sheet at the time of its installation between the hooks can make it possible to accentuate the rejection of snow between the points of the crampon and to a certain extent favor the maintenance of said sheet with the crampon.
  • non-elastic, non-deformable material for example a fabric, a strip of plastic material
  • the fixing of said sheet to the crampon is made by means of deformable or elastic elements allowing the sheet to move when the user is walking.
  • the safety device according to the invention can be used in all cases where a mountaineer is looking for great safety during his or her movements on snow-covered slopes. It is possible to adapt it to all types of existing crampons and its use is therefore universal. This invention is therefore particularly important for improving the safety of mountaineers.
  • the deformation power presented by the sheet 10, and more particularly when the latter is flexible allows it to conform to the contours which the underside of the stud presents, so that these the latter also participate in the restraint action.
