Abstract
A cathode unit for a fluorescent tube which is designed in such a way that the lifetime of the tube is increased considerably as a result of reduced losses of emission material from the cathode 3. These losses of material are caused among other things by ion bombardment and by evaporation of the emission material. In order to achieve greatly increased reflection back onto the cathode surface of released atoms and molecules, both those which are released by ion bombardment and those which evaporate from the surface of the cathode, the cathode 3 is surrounded by a cathode screen 6 in the form of a cup-shaped cover which can conduct electricity but is electrically insulated from the cathode. At the bottom of the screen there is an opening 8 for the insertion of the cathode 3. The open end of the screen 6 is closed by a plate 9 preferably of mica with a central hole 10. The diameter of the hole in the mica screen 9 should be selected to be as small as possible while taking into account the fact that the starting voltage of the tube must not exceed a predetermined value. <IMAGE>
