Description

i DK 177837 B1
Building structure
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a building structure, such as a building or a fence, and a set of building elements for building a building structure.
5
Background of the invention
It is known to build carports from modules. One example can be seen in the German utility model DE 20 2010 004 218 U1.
10 However such modular carports may be difficult to assembly with sufficient quality and durability.
Brief description of the invention
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a modular building, such as a 15 carport, having improved characteristics in relating to simplicity of assembly and/or quality and durability of such assembled buildings.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a modular building, which has a high degree of flexibility with attachment of various types of wall elements and 20 combinations thereof.
The invention relates to a building structure, such as a building or a fence, comprising a first upright post and a second upright post, and 25 at least one modular wall mounted on said first and second upright post, said modular wall comprising an upper T-beam comprising a upper web part and an upper flange part, a lower T-beam comprising a lower web part and a lower flange part, at least one wall element, 30 said upper T-beam being mounted to said first and second upright post by a first and second upper connection bracket with said upper web part facing downwards, 2 DK 177837 B1 said lower T- beam being mounted to said first and second upright post by a first and second lower connection bracket with said lower web part facing upwards, said upper T-beam positioned above said lower T-beam, and said upper and lower flange part each having an outer flange part facing one way and 5 an inner flange part facing the opposite way, wherein said upper and lower T- beams each have a plurality of predefined connection arrangements along both said outer flange parts and along said inner flange parts so as to connect said at least one wall element to said upper and lower flange part.
10
One advantage of the invention may be that a light-weight, yet sufficiently solid structure may be obtained using a minimum of construction materials.
Furthermore, an advantage of the invention may be that a building structure, e.g. a 15 building, such as a carport, or a fence, having modular walls can be obtained with very versatile possibilities for mounting different wall elements or combinations of wall elements. On one hand, the possibility to mount one or more wall elements to inner flange parts of an upper and lower T-beam and at the same time independently mount one or more wall elements to outer flange parts of an upper and lower T-beam 20 may give an advantageous and highly flexible building. This solution may be particularly advantageous for carports, since it may for carports be advantageous to close off part of the building opposite the vehicle entrance by closed outer wall composed of closed wall elements, such as e.g. glass plates or wooden wall elements, while still having a functional inner wall, which may e.g. be several wall elements 25 with horizontal bars, such as espalier elements, such a functional inner wall being used for e.g. tool keeping, attachment of various containers for storage of smaller and/or larger items etc. Also, on the other hand it may be desired to have a relatively open structure, e.g. near the vehicle entrance, possibly while using a functional outer wall for e.g. attachment of containers for growing plants etc. This may be facilitated 30 by using e.g. one or more espalier elements on the outer flange parts. These wide ranges of possibilities and many others may be realized by means of the invention, 3 DK 177837 B1 thereby providing a modular building, which have a high degree of flexibility with attachment of various types of wall elements and combinations thereof.
Furthermore, an advantage of the invention may be that a building structure, e.g. a 5 building or a fence, may be obtained which is easy for the end-user to assemble, and which can obtain sufficient durability and structural integrity.
One advantage of the invention may be that the wall elements are fixated to predefined connection parts in the flange parts, i.e. not in the vertical web part, which 10 may contribute significantly more to the strength of the T-beams with respect to limiting the bending of the T-beams compared to the horizontal flange parts.
Therefore, especially in embodiments, where the predefined connection parts comprises through-holes in the flanges parts, such through-holes in the web part may be avoided or at least significantly reduced, thereby avoiding or at least significantly 15 reducing such potentially negative effect on the structural stability of the T-beams that such through-holes may have.
A further advantage of the invention may be that the mounting one or more wall elements on the upper and lower T-beam may be relatively easy, even for the 20 unskilled person, since the wall element, such as an espalier element, a glass plate, or a closed wall element, such as a wooden wall element, may first be positioned in contact with the upper and lower T-beam, more specifically in abutment with both the web part and the flange part of both the upper and lower T-beam, and then secondly be fixated to the T-beams by means of the predefined connection 25 arrangements, such as e.g. through-holes, possibly additionally supported by screws, bolts, or other threated connection parts. This two-step mounting may be advantageous since the wall element may be supported or at least partly supported by the upper and lower T-beam after the first step, and may thereby by kept in place by a moderate horizontal force, such as by a hand of a person assembling the building.
30 Therefore, the person or persons assembling the building structure, e.g. a building or a fence, may perform the final fixation of the wall element to the upper and lower T- 4 DK 177837 B1 beam, e.g. by means of a nut and bolt or similar connection means, without at the same time having to lift the wall element, which may typically be rather heavy.
Thereby, a building, which is easy to erect may be obtained, and such building may also be more assembled with higher accuracy due to the person or persons 5 assembling it not having to carry the wall element while fixating it to the T-beams.
It may preferably be understood that said web part is being substantially vertical, and furthermore for the upper T-beam that an upper longitudinal edge of said web part is joined to the flange part along a longitudinal line of the web part, the longitudinal 10 line running along the middle of a broad side of said flange part, and similarly for the lower T-beam that an lower longitudinal edge of said web part is joined to the flange part along a longitudinal line of the web part, the longitudinal line running along the middle of a broad side of said flange part.
15 In the present context of the invention, a wall element may be understood as e.g. a wooden wall element, a glass wall element, closed wall elements, wall elements of other materials, such as e.g. steel or other metals, or more open structures, such as barred elements, such as espalier element. Such wall elements may or may not comprise e.g. doors, windows and/or other suitable openings.
20
It should be understood that while the at least one modular wall may only comprise a single wall element; such modular walls may typically comprise more than one wall element. In an example, the at least one modular wall comprises three adjacent inner wall elements and three adjacent outer wall elements. Generally, at least two wall 25 elements may be fixated to the at least one modular wall, more specifically one wall element, which may be fixated to the inner flange parts, and one wall element, which may be fixated to the outer flange parts.
It should be understood by the term T-beam that such T-beam is an elongated beam, 30 preferably a metal beam, such as a steel beam, having a T-shaped cross-section.
5 DK 177837 B1
Furthermore, it should be understood that the building structure, e.g. a building or a fence, may comprise more than one modular wall. Typically, several of the of the spaces between two upright posts may be filled with a modular wall, especially for carports, where it may advantageous to leave one such space between two adjacent 5 upright posts open allowing access to the enclosed space for a vehicle.
It should be understood in the context of the invention that many advantage and/or embodiments described in relation to buildings may apply similarly to fences, and also that many advantage and/or embodiments described in relation to fences may 10 apply similarly to buildings.
According to an embodiment of the invention, said first and second upper connection bracket and said first and second lower connection bracket each comprise an L-shaped bracket having a vertical part connected to said first or second post and a 15 horizontal part connected to said upper or lower upright post.
One advantage of the above embodiment may be that the assembly of the building structure, e.g. a building or a fence, may relatively easy, since the connection brackets may be fixated to the upright posts separately, and the T-beams being 20 connected to the connection brackets afterwards. Therefore, it is possible to connect the relatively light-weight connection brackets to the upright posts in the correct height, and then but the T-beams in abutment with the connection brackets, before fixating the T-beams to the connection brackets, e.g. by using threated rods on the T-beams engaged with through-holes in the connecting brackets and afterwards 25 engaging the threated rods by nuts.
An advantage of the above embodiment may be that the modular wall may be connected to the upright posts, so that e.g. outer and/or inner horizontal bars for connecting the modular wall at the bottom and/or top of said upright posts may be 30 avoided.
6 DK 177837 B1
In an example, each of said connection brackets are L-shaped metal brackets having one or more through-holes in said vertical part for fixating said vertical part to said upright post by means of a bolt or screw, and having one or more through-holes in said horizontal part for fixating said horizontal part to said T-beam by means of a 5 bolt or screw, thereby facilitating fixation of said T-beams to said upright posts.
According to an embodiment of the invention, said L-shaped brackets each comprise at least one through-hole in the vertical part connected to said upright posts by means of threated connection parts, and/or at least one through-hole in the horizontal part 10 connected to said T-beams by means of threated connection parts.
In an example, said threated connection parts comprise one or more of a bolt, a screw, and/or a threated rod, each of these possibly combined with nut if necessary.
15 According to an embodiment of the invention, said through-holes in the vertical part of said connection brackets are oblong through-holes having a vertical clearance when engaged with a threated connection part, and/or wherein said through-holes in the horizontal part of said connection brackets are oblong through-holes having a horizontal clearance along the longitudinal direction 20 of the T-beams when engaged with a threated connection part.
An advantage of the above embodiment may be that the assembly of the building structure, e.g. a building or a fence, is easier while maintaining a sufficient structural strength and durability. Otherwise, e.g. when people assemble do-it-yourself 25 buildings, especially people who are unskilled in construction, may find it difficult to assembly such buildings with sufficient precision. Therefore, such buildings may be built using an excess amount of time and/or with insufficient precision leading to lower quality and durability of such buildings. However, by means of the building structure, e.g. a building or a fence, according to the present embodiment, in may be 30 easier to construct such buildings or fences with sufficient precision due to the oblong through-holes and the resulting clearance, which may lead to reduced time 7 DK 177837 B1 consumption of assembling the building and/or to higher quality and durability of the assembled building.
Said at least one wall element may comprise one or more espalier element.
5
Said wall element may comprise at least an upper and a lower horizontal plate, said upper and lower horizontal plates having through-holes for mounting said wall element to said T-beam by means of one or more threated connection parts, such as e.g. a bolt or a screw, wherein said through-holes have a clearance along the 10 longitudinal direction of the horizontal plates.
E.g. said upper and lower horizontal plates being part of an L-beam, e.g. a frame having at each point an L-shaped cross-section.
15 According to an embodiment of the invention, said wall element comprise a glass plate and several mounting parts, said mounting parts each being connected to said upper or lower T-beam and fixating said glass plate against said upper and lower T-beam.
20 According to an embodiment of the invention, said upper and lower T-beam each have a length of between 1 and 5 meters, such as between 1 and 4 meters, such as between 1 and 3.5 meters, such as between 2 and 3.5 meters, such as between 2.5 and 3.5 meters, such as 3.0 meters.
25 Typically, it may be preferred that the length of the upper and lower T-beam is up to 3 meters, e.g. being 3 meters, since this length may give an advantageous trade-off between structural strength on one hand and material use and weight on the other hand.
30 The espalier element may comprise a frame of L-beams having an L-shaped cross-section, with a number of horizontal bars across the frame, the L-beams having two 8 DK 177837 B1 orthogonal sides, the orthogonal sides having a width of between 10 and 50 millimeters, such as between 20 and 40 millimeters, such as 25, 30, or 35 millimeters.
5 The at least one wall element may have a height when mounted on said upper and lower T-beam of between 100 centimeters and 300 centimeters, such as between 150 and 250 centimeters, such as 175, 200 or 225 centimeters, and/or wherein the wall element has a width when mounted on said upper and lower T-beam of between 50 and 200 centimeters, such as 75, 100, or 125 centimeters.
10
The upper and lower flange part may have a thickness of between 3 and 10 millimeters, such as between 5 and 7 millimeters, such as 6 millimeters.
An advantage of the above may be that an advantageous trade-off between using a 15 minimum of material and therefore having a light-weight structure on one hand and having a sufficient length of the upper and lower T-beam, thereby having a building of sufficient size without adding additional upright posts and/or modular walls on the other hand.
20 The upper and lower web part may have a thickness of between 3 and 10 millimeters, such as between 5 and 7 millimeters, such as 6 millimeters.
An advantage of the above may be that an advantageous trade-off between using a minimum of material and therefore having a light-weight structure on one hand and 25 having a sufficient length of the upper and lower T-beam, thereby having a building of sufficient size without adding additional upright posts and/or modular walls on the other hand.
The width of the upper and lower flange part is between 25 and 75 millimeters, such 30 as between 40 and 60 millimeters, such as 50 millimeters.
9 DK 177837 B1
An advantage of the above may be that an advantageous trade-off between using a minimum of material and therefore having a light-weight structure on one hand and having a sufficient length of the upper and lower T-beam, thereby having a building of sufficient size without adding additional upright posts and/or modular walls on the 5 other hand.
The width of the upper and lower web part is between 25 and 75 millimeters, such as between 40 and 60 millimeters, such as 50 millimeters.
10 An advantage of the above may be that an advantageous trade-off between using a minimum of material and therefore having a light-weight structure on one hand and having a sufficient length of the upper and lower T-beam, thereby having a building of sufficient size without adding additional upright posts and/or modular walls on the other hand.
15
According to an embodiment of the invention, the upper and lower T-beam comprises at least one threated rod in each end of the upper and lower T-beam, said threated rods extending from the upper surface of the upper flange part or from the lower surface of the lower flange part, the threated rods engaging through-holes of 20 the connection brackets thereby fixating said upper and lower T-beam to said connection brackets.
In should be understood in connection with the above embodiment, that according to a preferred embodiment, the threated rods preferably engaged the mentioned 25 through-holes and the threated themselves are being engaged by nuts so as to clamp the connection bracket between the nut and the flange part thereby facilitating the fixation.
Said upper and lower T-beam may be mounted to said first and second upright post 30 at the end of said upper and lower T-beam.
10 DK 177837 B1
The upper T-beam may be mounted near the top of the first and second upright post, such as in the upper 50 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the upper 40 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the upper 30 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the upper 20 % of the first and second upright post, 5 such as in the upper 15 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the upper 10 % of the first and second upright post.
The lower T-beam may be mounted near the bottom of the first and second upright post, such as in the lower 50 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the 10 lower 40 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the lower 30 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the lower 20 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the lower 15 % of the first and second upright post, such as in the lower 10 % of the first and second upright post.
15 According to an embodiment of the invention, said predefined connection arrangements comprises through-holes engaged by corresponding connection parts, such as threated connection parts.
There may be a clearance between said at least one the wall element and the first and 20 second upright post.
Said upper and lower T-beam may be metal T-beams, such as steel T-beams.
Said building structure may be sa building, such as a carport, or a free-standing 25 building structure, such as a fence.
It may be especially preferred that said building structure is a building. Such buildings may comprise additional structural elements, such as e.g. a cross bar mounted to adjacent upright posts or other building elements.
30 11 DK 177837 B1
It may be especially preferred that said building structure is a fence. Such a fence may comprise multiple upright posts positioned in a row, and modular walls being mounted between adjacent upright posts, thereby forming the fence.
5 Said building structure may be a building, such as a carport.
According to an embodiment of the invention, said building, such as a carport, comprises at least four upright posts, said at least four upright posts comprising said first 10 upright post and said second upright post, a roof, and at least one modular wall mounted on said first and second upright post, wherein said building forms an enclosed space, and wherein said outer flange parts face away from the enclosed space and said inner 15 flange parts face inwards towards the enclosed space.
By enclosed space should of course not be understood a hermetically sealed space, since buildings of the invention, such as e.g. carports, may typically have at least one missing wall, e.g. for access of a vehicle, and even some of the applicable wall 20 elements may be open structures, such as e.g. the espalier element, but rather preferable as a three-dimensional inner space defined by the parts of the building.
It should be understood in the context of the above embodiment that the building may comprise more than four upright posts, such as e.g. six or eight upright posts, or 25 more upright posts. In an example, the building comprises six upright posts in two parallel rows of three posts positioned opposite each other with equal distance between each adjacent post; this building furthermore comprising five modular walls; two modular walls covering each of the longer sides and one modular wall covering one of the two shorter end sides leaving the opposite end side open, e.g. for 30 a vehicle.
12 DK 177837 B1
Said building may be a domestic utility building, such as a carport, a greenhouse, or a garden shed.
Said building may be a carport.
5
The invention furthermore relates to a set of building elements that when assembled make up a building structure, such as a building or a fence, said set of building elements comprising a first upright post and a second upright post, and 10 at least one modular wall for mounting on said first and second upright post, said modular wall comprising an upper T-beam comprising a upper web part and an upper flange part, a lower T-beam comprising a lower web part and a lower flange part, at least one wall element, 15 a first and second upper connection bracket and a first and second lower connection bracket, said upper T-beam being adapted for mounting to said first and second upright post by said first and second upper connection bracket with said upper web part facing downwards, 20 said lower T- beam being adapted for mounting to said first and second upright post by said first and second lower connection bracket with said lower web part facing upwards, said upper and lower flange part each having an outer flange part adapted for facing one way and an inner flange part adapted for facing the opposite way, 25 wherein said upper and lower T- beam each has a plurality of predefined connection arrangements along both said outer flange parts and along said inner flange parts for connecting said at least one wall element to said upper and lower flange part.
It should be understood in the context of the above that the outer flange parts face the 30 opposite way as the inner flange parts. E.g. for buildings, the outer flange parts face away from the enclosed space, while the inner flange parts face inwards towards the 13 DK 177837 B1 enclosed space. For fences the inner and the outer flange parts face in opposite directions, these directions being substantially perpendicular to the vertical surface defined by the web parts.
5 Furthermore, said set of building elements may comprise the first and second upright post and the parts used to make the modular wall, such as the upper and lower T-beam, the first and second upper and first and second lower connection bracket, the at least one wall element, and any necessary connection means, e.g. threated connection parts for predefined connection arrangements, or other threated 10 connection parts, or other connection parts.
Said set of building elements may make up, when assembled, a building, such as a carport, forming an enclosed space, said set of building elements furthermore comprising 15 at least four upright posts comprising said first upright post and said second upright post, and a roof, wherein said outer flange parts are adapted for facing away from the enclosed space and said inner flange parts are adapted for facing inwards towards the enclosed 20 space.
Said set of building elements according to any of the above may be for assembling a building structure, according to any of the above, such as a building, such as a carport, according to any of the above or a fence.
25 A building according to any of the above may be built from the above set of building elements.

Description of the invention
Referring to figure 1, a building 1 according to an example is described. The building 1 comprises a modular wall 2, and a roof 3, and further supporting posts. The modular wall 2 comprises a first upright post 4, a second upright post 5, and three 5 wall elements 12 fixated to the first and second upright posts 4, 5. The three wall elements 12 shown in figure 1 are espalier type of wall elements, but other wall elements might be used. The building 1 defines an enclosed space 25. The modular wall 2 furthermore comprises an upper T-beam 6, and a lower T-beam 7. The upper T-beam 6 is fixated in one end to the first upright post 4 by a first upper connection 10 bracket 13 and in the opposite end to the second upright post 5 by a second upper connection bracket 14. Similarly, the lower T-beam 7 is fixated in one end to the first upright post 4 by a first lower connection bracket 15 and in the opposite end to the second upright post 5 by a second lower connection bracket 16. Now, the upper T-beam 6 is made up by a vertical upper web part 8, and a horizontal upper flange part 15 9. One longitudinal edge of the upper web part 8 is connected to the bottom surface of the upper flange part 9 along the middle of this bottom surface, thereby forming the upper T-beam 6, the upper web part 8 of which faces downwards. Similarly, the lower T-beam 7 is made up by a vertical lower web part 10, and a horizontal lower flange part 11. One longitudinal edge of the lower web part 10 is connected to the 20 upper surface of the lower flange part 11 along the middle of this upper surface, thereby forming the lower T-beam 7, the lower web part 10 of which faces upwards.
Each of the upper and lower flange part 9,11 has an outer flange part 17 and an inner flange part 18 (see e.g. figure 2), where the outer flange part 17 faces away from the enclosed space 25, i.e. it is on the outside of the modular wall 2, while the inner 25 flange part 18 faces inwards towards the enclosed space 25, i.e. it is on the inside of the modular wall 2. Along the inner flange part 18 as well as along the outer flange part 17, a number of predefined connection arrangements 19 are positioned. These predefined connection arrangements 19 may in an example be e.g. through-holes with a corresponding bolt and nut arrangement. These predefined connection 30 arrangements 19 facilitates possibility of connecting one or more wall elements 12 to the upper and lower T-beam 6, 7; e.g. as seen on figure 1 three wall elements 12 are 16 DK 177837 B1 connected to the upper and lower T-beam 6, 7 by means of the predefined connection arrangements 19.
Now, on figure 2, a part of a building 1 or a fence according to an example is shown.
5 Further to the example illustrated on figure 1, the example illustrated on figure 2 shows the upper T-beam 6 connected the second upright post 5 by the second upper connection bracket 14. This connection bracket 14, being an L-shaped bracket, has a vertical part being connected to the second upright post 5 by threated connection parts 20 and a horizontal part being connected to the upper T-beam 6 by threated 10 connection parts 20. On figure 3B, the upper T-beam 6 is shown having two threated connection arrangements 20, these threated connection arrangements 20 being e.g. threated rods. The threated rods may engage through-holes on the horizontal part of one of the connection brackets 13, 14, 15, 16 and 30 fixate the upper T-beam 6 to the connection bracket by means of a nut. On figure 3C, a part of the upper T-beam 6 is shown in an enlarged bottom-up view. Of course the DK 177837 B1 17 T-beam shown on figure 3 A, 3B, and 3C should similarly illustrate the lower T-beam 7 in a top-down view.
On figure 4A, 4B, and 4B, a connection bracket 13, 14, 15, 16 is shown according to 5 an example . On figure 4A, the connection bracket 13, 14, 15, 16 is shown in a front view where the horizontal part has oblong through-holes 23. These oblong through-holes 23 may ensure that the mounting of the connection bracket 13,14,15, 16 to an upright post 4, 5 can be performed both easily and precisely by the end user, even by end users unskilled in construction work. When mounting the connection bracket 13, 10 14,15,16 to the upright post 4, 5 with a threated connection part, such as a screw or another threated connection part, the screw may be inserted through the oblong through-holes 23 and into the upright post 4, 5 such that the screw is partly fixated to the upright post 4, 5, but allowing the connection bracket 13, 14, 15, 16 to move up and down so as to finely adjust the vertical position of the connection bracket 13, 14, 15 15, 16 before the final fixation to the upright post 4, 5 by screwing the screw completely into the upright post 4, 5. On figure 4B, the connection bracket 13, 14, 15, 16 is shown in a side view with the vertical and horizontal parts. Finally, on figure 4C the connection bracket 13, 14, 15, 16 is shown in a top-down view with oblong through-holes 23 for mounting the upper or lower T-beam 6, 7 to. Typically, 20 when mounting a T-beam 6, 7, for example the upper T-beam 6, to the first and second upright posts 4, 5, the upper connection brackets 13, 14 are first mounted to the upright posts 4, 5 as described above, then, the upper T-beam 6 is connected to the upper connection brackets 13, 14. The threated rods of the upper T-beam 6 are inserted through the oblong through-holes 23, after which position of the upper T-25 beam 6 may be adjusted along the longitudinal axis of the upper T-beam 6 due to the oblong through-holes 23, and nuts are mounted on the threated rods thereby finalizing the mounting. Also, due to the horizontal flexibility induced by the oblong through-holes 23, also an error in the positioning of the upright posts may be compensated.
