Im Gartenbau, für Terrassen- und Mauerabdeckplatten werden Natursteinplatten verwendet, -weil diese der Umgebung angepaßt sind. Ihre Herstellung, die durch Spalten bzw. Beschlagen erfolgt, ist schwierig und führt häufig zu Bruch; hinzu kommen noch recht erhebliche Transportkosten, so daß derartige Platten verhältnismäßig teuer kommen. Aus diesem Grunde ist man dazu übergegangen, künstliche Platten für die vorgenannten Zwecke herzustellen. Man hat z. B. Stein- oder Ziegelsplit, Tuff u. dgl. zementgebunden, wobei rechteckige bzw. quadratische Steinplatten mit glatten Außenflächen erhalten wurden.
