Method for Separation of Potassium and Sodium Nitrate The invention
relates to a process for separating potassium nitrate from sodium sulfate or the like
containing salt mixtures. As is well known, the Polytherme has the solubility of potassium nitrate
a very steep gradient in water, d. H. a relatively low solubility
at lower temperatures there is a high degree of solubility at higher temperatures.
According to the information in the physicochemical table from Landolt-Börnstein-Schere
at 0 ° only 13.8 g of potassium nitrate are soluble in 100 g of water, while at 80 'the same
Amount of water 168.9 g of potassium nitrate is able to dissolve.
So vermögen

Various attempts have already been made to separate the two salts. B. already proposed to achieve the increase in solubility when using a salt that has no common anion with the salt to be brought into solution. It has now surprisingly been shown that, contrary to the law of mass action, that is, contrary to the expected regularity, an increase in solubility actually takes place in the case of equiionic salts, in which, according to the law of mass action, a decrease in solubility would have to occur. For example, 100 g of water can only dissolve 31.8 g of potassium nitrate at 20 ', whereas in the presence of 127.5 g of calcium nitrate, 97 g of potassium nitrate, calculated for the same amount of water, are soluble at the same temperature. This result is all the more surprising since calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate contain the same anion and, according to the law of mass action, one would have to assume that the salts mutually reduce their solubility. Examples
i. At 2o 'dissolve

On the other hand, at 2o °: '
in 100 g of water. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ... . . . . . . . . . . . . 31.5 g KN03

z. When a mixture of 7% potassium nitrate and 93% sodium nitrate was leached, the equilibrium solution contained in 100 g of water: at o ° 77 g NaN03 and 2o g KN03
- 20 '93 9 - - 38 9 -
If calcium nitrate was added to the potassium nitrate-sodium nitrate mixture and the salt mixture was now leached with water, the alkalis contained 100 g of water: at o ° 28 g NaN03 and 42 g KN03
- 20, 39 g - - 80g -
3. By leaching out 1 kg of the Ka-Na salt mixture while adding calcium nitrate with a little, for example 100 g, water, all of the potassium nitrate dissolves. Pure sodium nitrate is obtained from the residue during recrystallization; Potassium nitrate is obtained from the lye, which is rich in potassium nitrate, by crystallization, etc.
If no calcium salt has been added to the Ka-Na mixture, this can be done
can be added to the lye. From the at 20 ° to 100 "g of water 93 g of NaNO3 and 38 g
Final liquor containing KN03 increases the solubility by adding calcium nitrate (see above)
lowered by sodium nitrate. The solubility of the sodium nitrate is increased by cooling to 0 °
further humiliated. The sodium nitrate crystallizes while the
all potassium nitrate remains enriched in the solution.
- Salz umgerechnet. For the purposes of the calculations, the calcium nitrate is always anhydrous
- Salt converted.
It follows from the two tables of Example i that the solubility
of NaN 03 with increasing Ca N 03 content according to the law of mass action
decreases, whereas that of KN03 increases. Example 2 draws from this anomaly
the practical application and shows that this behavior of KN03 in the presence of
CaN03 can be expanded to a separation of KN03 from Na N03 according to Example 3.
