Versuche, die Kohlen bei gewöhnlicher Temperatur ohne Zusatz von Bindemittel zu brikettieren und dann zu vergasen, hatten nur teilweise Erfolg. Erstens sind die Briketts nur durch einen sehr hohen Druck so fest zu bekommen, daß sie das Einfüllen in die Gaserzeuger vertragen, zweitens geben aber nur backende Steinkohlen, die man vorziehen wird, bei hoher Temperatur zu verkoken, ein festes Gut. Hierdurch wird der Wärmebedarf des Gaserzeugers bedeutend herabgesetzt, da nur diejenige Wärme zugeführt werden muß, die für den eigentlichen Vergasungsprozeß notwendig ist.
