Process for the production of hot cathodes It is known that the oxides usually attached to the surface of the wires for the production of hot cathodes can also be finely distributed in the wires. It has also become known to use finely divided mixtures of oxides in noble metals. It has now been shown that it is particularly advantageous to use mixtures of the oxides of the second group of the periodic system of the elements on the one hand with those of the third group, the rare earths and the fourth group on the other. These mixtures have a much higher electron emission than the pure oxides per se, which could not be foreseen. This beneficial effect is particularly evident when the mixtures of oxides are added to noble metals such as platinum, platinum iridium or similar alloys. It has been shown that in this case a reduction of the oxides by carbon or similar chemical substances such as calcium, magnesium or the like is not necessary. The electron emission occurs immediately after the first heating after being pumped out well. However, it is advisable to emit the wire after pumping by gradually increasing the voltage and to pre-burn it for a short time if it is overloaded. The manufacture of the wires with the addition of oxide presents no difficulty. It is easy to process platinum into wire in the usual way with additions of 1 to 2 % or more of oxide mixtures. Mixtures of a relatively large amount of the oxide of a metal have proven to be particularly favorable .the second group, e.g. B. barium oxide, .with a small addition of the oxide of a metal of the third or fourth group or an element of the rare earth group, e.g. B. of cerium oxide. As an exemplary embodiment, platinum wire with the addition of about 90% Ba, 0.100; o Ce0 .. The wire is drawn, as usual. This wire then does not need any pretreatment, it can easily be inserted into the tubes, so that extremely simple and safe mass production is possible. In order to increase the service life it can sometimes be expedient to subsequently provide the wires with a coating of oxides in some way, using the same or a similar composition.
It should also be mentioned that mixtures of the
Oxides, as they are used here, to be used as coatings on the wires.
Compared to this method, that which forms the subject of the invention has the advantage
the much simpler applicability and greater cheapness.
