Description

Process for the purification of organic bases. In a further development of the process protected by patent 348380, it has been shown that the electrolytic separation of organic bases from inorganic or organic acids can not only be carried out with betaine, but is also capable of more general application. Acid-free or virtually acid-free solutions are obtained from which the pure bases can be prepared in a known manner and new salts of the bases can be prepared by reaction with other acids. The acid transfer succeeds in the weak bases, such as. B. glycocolla and urea, the easiest. In the case of the strong bases, such as B. tetramethylammonium hydroxide, detectable amounts of acid anions remain in the catholyte. These cases are not the subject of the invention.

Example i: A solution that contains about zoo g of hydrochloric acid urea in 3oo ccm contains, is brought into the cathode compartment of an electrolytic cell and electrolyzed. After 5o to 6o ampere hours, the voltage rises up to within a few minutes 100 volts, the catholyte proves to be chlorine-free.

Example 2: A solution of 13 g of hydrochloric aniline in 300 ccm of water is filled into the cathode compartment of an electrolytic cell. At 25 amps, the voltage increases after an hour. The solution is chlorine-free in a short time.

Example 3: A solution which contains 25 g of glycollsulfate and 2 g of excess sulfuric acid in 300 ccm of water is fed into the cathode compartment of an electrolytic cell; after 50 ampere hours all anions of the acid have migrated.

PATENT CLAIM: Modification of the process protected by patent 348380, in which, for the purpose of obtaining pure organic bases, instead of solutions of betaine salts, salts of other organic bases which may contain excess amounts of acid or base are used, but the salts of the tetraalkylammonium bases or other organic bases of equal strength are excluded, electrolyzed in the cathode compartment of an electrolytic cell until the anions of the acids have completely migrated.
