Description
Process for the utilization of thickened sulphite waste liquor as a finishing, Adhesive or tanning agent: The waste liquor that is not used in the manufacture of sulphite pulp one has already sought to use it for the most varied of commercial purposes, both in the form as they come from the digesters in the sulphite pulp mills drained. will, as well as after-thickening. This so-called. "Thick liquor" that Forms the starting material in the case of the present innovation, almost always has an acidic reaction, which circumstance made it difficult to exploit them for various commercial purposes. You therefore had to neutralize them or make them alkaline first, in order to then make them to use for the production of paints, binding agents and impregnation agents, by using these thick liquors, made neutral or alkaline, as emulsion carriers used for asphalt, tar, pitch, resins, oils, hydrocarbons and others Substances or mixtures thereof which are insoluble or very sparingly soluble in water. Included but should the neutralized thick liquor in a relatively very small amount, for example 5 parts to 9g parts tar can be used.
These mixtures or emulsions of oils and thick liquor turned out to be but useless for other commercial purposes, e.g. 13,. for lubricating machine parts. Around to make them usable for this purpose has been proposed by the same inventors, add larger amounts of thick liquor to the oils, about = part of thick liquor to 2 to 3 Share oil to thicken the eye.
So in all of these earlier proposals it was a question of combining tar, oils, etc. with smaller amounts (up to a maximum of half) of thick liquor. In the best case scenario, qo to 50 percent thick liquor came to 6o to 5o percent - other substances that should be made emulsifiable in water. However, this does not solve the problem of utilizing the largest possible amounts of sulphite waste liquor commercially in a very advantageous manner.
It has now been found that good finishing, adhesive and tanning agents can be obtained from thick liquor (from about 34 to 37 ' B6) by using them with relatively little solution of resin, oil, etc. in volatile, inert agents such as Gasoline, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, etc., intimately mixed and thus made emulsifiable. If, for example, 9 parts of thick liquor are kneaded strongly with 1 part of a resin-gasoline solution (which may also contain some rubber or the like), a good adhesive is obtained. 9 parts of thick liquor and 1 part of 0l-benzene solution kneaded, diluted with water, a lightened finishing compound. By kneading 9 parts of thick liquor with 1 part of petrol oil, a tanning agent is obtained which, after dilution with water (because of the favorable properties of the lignin of the sulphite liquor and the oil), is suitable for the so-called "combined" tanning process. For this purpose, it is expedient to use sulphite waste liquor purified by known methods; Such an emulsion alleviates the unpleasant hardness of the leather caused by sulphite waste liquor alone.
The volatile solvents are essential to prevent e.g. B. on the one hand To allow oil, etc. to penetrate better into the tissue, skin, etc., on the other hand, resin to make emulsifiable at all, otherwise lumpy excretions would occur.
The products obtained in this way owe their valuable properties the fact that the additives incorporated in the thick liquor, such as. B. types of oils, - rubber, with the help of volatile, inert - solvents, such as gasoline, Benzene, carbon tetrachloride, with the 11 # ickla lies - extremely extensive »disperse Phases «which are already very close to the» colloidal solution «. Therefore, it is easily understandable that when using such fine distributions of z. B. 01 gasoline in thick liquor as a tanning agent such a good tanning effect occurs by namely at the same time for the tanning substances of the thick liquor and in particular a far-reaching deep effect is achieved for the fatty substances (oils). In the extraction of finishing agents, it is also important that the thick liquor through the treatment undergoes a technically quite considerable brightening according to the method of the invention, which is not achieved if the thick liquor and the additives are separated . or used in a superficial mixture or even only the untreated waste liquor, It should not be forgotten that they are only used for finishing and tanning Diluting with water is usable. At last it is for those following the present 'procedure to note that the adhesive obtained with this "disperse combination of substances" produced bonds with regard to the drying capacity - especially when it is damp Air completely fails the thick liquor - as well as in terms of pliability (elasticity), d. H. the lack of brittleness, surprising, new effects -representing, completely apart from the strong increase in internal friction, including viscosity, the such fine distributions of z. B. produce gutta-percha resin solutions in thick liquor. and which is of importance when used as an adhesive.
The present method thus enables, by bringing together Thick liquor in quite a large amount, up to about 90 percent, with a relatively large amount small amounts, about 10 percent, solution of resins, oils and the like in volatile organic compounds Substances to achieve emulsions, which, depending on the substances used, are good as finishing, Adhesives or tanning agents are to be used commercially. This usage option could by no means be inferred from what has become known so far a valuable addition to technology.
