Verfahren und Vorrichtung zur Herstellung beständiger, wäßriger Emulsionen wasserunlöslicher SubstanzenMethod and device for the production of stable, aqueous emulsions of water-insoluble substances

Various methods are known for emulsifying water-insoluble substances. In general, the procedure is such that the substance to be emulsified is finely divided in water in the presence of a wetting agent (emulsifier). It can be distributed by simply shaking or stirring vigorously. In most cases, however, when the components are stirred together, initially only coarsely dispersed pre-emulsions are formed, which then have to be converted into finely divided emulsions using so-called homogenizers. High-pressure emulsifiers, ultrasonic emulsifiers and vibrators based on various principles come into consideration as homogenizers (see, for example, "Ulimanns Encyklopadie der technischen Chemie", 3rd edition, volume 6, (1955), pages 502/503, Verlag Urban & Schwärzenberg, Munich) - Berlin). The emulsions produced in this way are either unstable or a considerable outlay on machinery and multistage work are required in order to obtain stable emulsions. In addition, it is often necessary to use organic solvents as well in order to adapt the viscosity of the inner phase to the outer phase. Another disadvantage of these known processes is that they can only be used to emulsify a relatively small amount of water-insoluble substances, that is to say relatively dilute emulsions are formed.

AS 1 6kk 952 also discloses a process for producing aqueous emulsions of highly viscous, hydrophobic oils, a mixture of the highly viscous oil, an emulsifier and a small amount of water being subjected to strong shear forces by means of a roller kneader. This known process provides highly concentrated, but coarsely dispersed emulsions and is only suitable for emulsifying highly viscous oils; substances of low and medium viscosity, water-insoluble substances, cannot be emulsified. In addition, the stability of the emulsions prepared by the known process, especially when diluted with water, leaves something to be desired.

According to the invention, a method is made available, which makes it possible to also use low to medium viscosity, water-insoluble substances without great mechanical effort can be converted into permanent emulsions in a single operation.

In addition, a device for performing the method is claimed, which is characterized by an optional heatable or coolable boiler (5) »the with an agitator and outlet (6) is provided, and by a mixing device attached laterally in the lower third of the boiler (4) (compare Figure 1).

The water-insoluble substances to be emulsified are products with normal to moderately increased Temperature, i.e. at temperatures of around 15 - 32 C, are of low to medium viscosity. Under low to medium viscosity Products are to be understood as having a viscosity of 20 to in the specified temperature range 10, 000 cP. These substances are in this temperature range i.e. liquid to viscous and can be pumped without further ado.

Auch können solche Polymere endständig noch reak-The main water-insoluble substances which are emulsified by the process according to the invention are organopolysxloxanes to call. The known alkyl hydrogen polysiloxanes, dialkyl polysiloxanes, in particular, come as such Methyl and ethyl hydrogen, as well as dimethyl and diethyl polysiloxanes and their mixtures in question. Instead of the mixes Of course, suitable cohydrolysates of silanes which contain hydrogen bonded to silicon can also be used, emulsified with silanes that do not contain any hydrogen bonded to silicon. The organopolysiloxanes mentioned generally have a viscosity of 30,000 cP at 20 ° C. Organopolysiloxanes can also be used higher viscosity, namely up to 10,000 cP at 20 ° C the process according to the invention are emulsified. These are mostly modified by special substituents Dialkyl, especially dirnethyl polysiloxanes, which still may contain small amounts of silicon-bonded hydrogen. The methyl groups can be unsaturated by phenyl groups Organo group, e.g. B. vinyl groups and the like be substituted. Such polymers can also be terminally reactive

The emulsification of organopolysiloxanes according to the invention Method is particularly preferred.

In addition, oil and fat-like substances are also suitable, provided they have the specified viscosity at up to 32 ° C. Examples are oils, low-melting waxes and fats and their free fatty acids.

Paraffin oils can also be produced using the process according to the invention be emulsified.

As a further group of suitable water-insoluble substances, liquid or low-melting aminoplast or modified aminoplast resins are listed. Examples of such products are described in U.S. Patent 3,506,661.

Organometallic compounds which are liquid to low-melting can also be prepared by the process according to the invention be emulsified. Examples are dibutyltin dilaurate and dibutyltin diacetate.

This list of water-insoluble substances does not claim to be complete. Basically you can - as already explained - all at up to 32 ° C low to Medium viscosity, water-insoluble substances are emulsified in the manner according to the invention.

The numbers of ethylene oxide (also in the examples) indicate the number of moles per mole of amine, amide, carboxylic acid or alcohol.

The main cationic emulsifiers are quaternary ammonium compounds to call. Octadecyl sulfonate, mineral oil and paraffin sulfonate, di- (2-ethylhexyl) - and Dx- (tridecyl) -Na-sulfosuccinate, as well as Called cetyl and oleyl sulfate. To neutralize the sulfonates and sulfates, in addition to the customary aqueous alkaline solutions (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide solution) amines such as propylamine, monoethanolamine and triethanolamine can also be used.

The nonionic and cationic emulsifiers are preferably used in the process according to the invention. The amount of emulsifier is 2-30% by weight, preferably 8-20% by weight, in particular 10-18% by weight, based on water-insoluble substance.

The water-insoluble substances are emulsified in the process according to the invention in the presence of a small amount of water. The water is used in an amount of 2-25% by weight, preferably 6-18% by weight , in particular 6- Ik . The amount of water is independent of the viscosity of the water-insoluble substance to be emulsified, but depends solely on the amount of emulsifier used. The amount of water is 0.4 to 1.7 times the amount of emulsifier. Particularly safe work, with particularly stable emulsions being produced at the same time, is guaranteed if the amount of water is 0.5 to T.0 times the amount of emulsifier.

The method according to the invention is carried out in the manner that the water / emulsifier mixture, which is advantageous with, for example, hydrochloric, sulfuric or formic acid set a pH of 1.5 to 5.5 »in particular 2.5-4 is presented, and then the low to medium viscosity water-insoluble substance is slowly mixed in. (Die Zeitangaben gelten für die Zugabe von ca. 1200 kg wasserunlöslicher Substanz.)insoluble substance, the viscosity has increased to such an extent that the mixing in of the further water-insoluble substance and its distribution in the mixture is sufficiently effected by the shear forces. The preferred range for the preparation of the preemulsion in the first stage is from 10 to 30 wt.%, In particular 10 to 20 wt. 0 Jo water-insoluble substance. The admixture of the remaining water-insoluble substance (second stage) is carried out immediately afterwards in the preferred mode of operation without interruption. Even during the addition of the water-insoluble substance, the mixture is exposed to increasingly strong shear forces with constant stirring or kneading. The entire admixture takes for low viscosity substances about 2-5 »particular 3 - h hours and at moderately viscous substances, thus with substances having a viscosity of about 5OO - 10,000 cP at 20 ° C for about 5 - 9, in particular 6-8 hours . (The times given apply to the addition of approx. 1200 kg of water-insoluble substance.)

Die Temperatur während der Emulgierung liegt bei 15 - 45° C,Depending on the substance to be emulsified, it may be necessary to to cool or even to heat during the addition of the same. For substances with viscosities of over approx. 3,000 cP In some cases, the heat generated by friction is so great that slight cooling is necessary. For substances which only become fluid at a moderately elevated temperature, it is necessary to heat, but the temperature should not be chosen higher than absolutely necessary. The temperature during emulsification is 15 - 45 ° C,

Die Verdünnung mit Wasser wird dabei im allgemeinen auf eine Konzentration von 50 - 85 Gew.$ an wasserunlöslicher SubstanzAfter the water-insoluble substance has been added, the action of the shear forces is continued for 1 - 2.5 hours, to get an even, homogeneous emulsion. Finally, for easier handling, it is advisable to the highly concentrated emulsions, which contain up to approx. 95% by weight of water-insoluble substance emulsified and in In the form of highly viscous pastes, dilute with water. The dilution with water is generally on a Concentration of 50-85% by weight of water-insoluble substance

Nach der Einmischung des Wassers, was im allgemeinen 3-5 Stunden in Anspruch nimmt, werden die fertigen Konzentrate abgefüllt.performed; that is, it results according to the invention Process extremely concentrated emulsions even after dilution. After mixing in the water, what in the generally takes 3-5 hours, the finished concentrates are bottled.

Stufe unter Rühren, Kneten oder ähnlichem vorzunehmen .This procedure is preferred in the process according to the invention. However, it is also quite possible - but less suitable - to separate the first and second stages, the That is, to prepare the pre-emulsion separately and then add the remaining water-insoluble substance in a 2nd stage with stirring, kneading or the like.

The advantages of the method according to the invention are therein too see that it is possible to produce highly concentrated, stable emulsions of low to medium viscosity, water-insoluble Producing substances preferably in one operation, whereby - as will be shown below - the machine Effort is extremely low. The method according to the invention is also particularly advantageous because the use foreign solvents are not required. For concentrates of organohydrogenpolysiloxanes is also the particularly low level of hydrogen splitting, based on emulsified organopolysiloxane, to highlight. The extremely stable emulsions (concentrates) obtained continue to offer due to the high content of active. Substance has substantial commercial benefits, most notably in a reduction in packaging, transportation and storage costs you can see.

Überraschender-Due to the state of the art, it could not be foreseen that it would be possible in this simple way, even low to To convert medium-viscosity substances into permanent emulsions. According to the state of the art, that was the prerequisite for emulsification under the sole action of shear forces, that highly viscous substances are emulsified. Just if these substances were emulsified, sufficiently high shear forces could be expected. Surprising-

B. als Appretur-, und Imprägniermittel,The emulsions obtained are depending on the emulsified substance different uses. Emulsions of organopolysiloxanes and paraffin oils are used, for. B. as Water repellants for fiber materials. Also for coatings and coatings, organopolysiloxane emulsions are used. Emulsions of organometallic compounds are used used as curing catalysts. The emulsions of oil and fat-like compounds are among other things as a base suitable for cosmetic preparations. If aminoplast resins are emulsified by the process according to the invention, they serve this z. B. as a finishing and impregnating agent,

.,. . .FIG. 1 shows a flow diagram for the process according to the invention in its preferred embodiment. In the Hührkessel (5), the water / emulsifier is - mixture submitted. The water-insoluble substance passes from the storage container (i) via: the metering or injection pump (2) and the line (-3 a), preferably (3 b) into the stirred tank (5) that can be heated or cooled, if necessary In the lower third of this boiler O5) there is an additional mixing device (k) . The finished emulsion reaches the storage container via the outlet (6) and the device (7), the function of which will be explained later. .,. . .

Auflage, Band 2, (1972), Seiten 289/290, Verlag Chemie, Weinheim/Bergstraße'). Vorteilhaft ist auch die zusätzliche Anbringung von Wandabstreifern, um die Durchmischung der gesamten Masse zu ermöglichen. can be provided with a simple anchor agitator, a paddle, gate or twin-shaft agitator. Boilers which are equipped with a planetary stirrer are particularly preferred, since particularly high shear forces act here on the mixture (see "Ullmanns Encyfclopadie der technischen Chemie", k. Edition, Volume 2, (1972), pages 289/290, Verlag Chemie, Weinheim / Bergstrasse '). The additional attachment of wall scrapers is also advantageous in order to enable the entire mass to be mixed.

Stufe, unvertretbar hohe Zeiten in Anspruch. The mixing device (4) is especially for the preparation the pre-emulsion of the first stage is of considerable importance. That is, without this additional device, the If water-insoluble substance is added, the admixture, especially in the 1st stage, takes an unacceptably long time. However, if the additional mixing device (4) is used, rapid familiarization can be achieved the water-insoluble substance can be achieved in the emulsifier / water mixture. The mixing device (4) is in the simplest case a distributor plate. This distributor disc can be in the most varied of forms z. B. by the formation of elevations, prongs, the attachment of pins (lump breaker), etc., be modified. A particularly effective mixing is achieved, when this distributor disc takes the form of a toothed disc (8) (Figure 2). The emulsion preparation is particularly advantageous and quick when the water-insoluble Substance on the distributor disk, especially the toothed disk (8), is straightened and so incorporated directly into the existing mixture.

B. Kolloidmühlen, Zahnradpumpen u. a. (siehe "Ulimanns Encyklopädie der technischen Chemie", 3· Auflage, Band 1, (1951), Seiten 79 - 85 und 637/638, Verlag Urban & Schwarzenberg, München - Berlin). Besonders geeignet sind Schnecken-Pumpen.to reduce, according to the invention / a device (7) downstream, the crushing is still present higher concentrated proportions and at the same time the promotion of the finished concentrate makes. All devices are suitable which are able to move substances of higher viscosity, e.g. B. colloid mills, gear pumps and others. (please refer "Ulimann's Encyclopedia of Technical Chemistry", 3rd edition, Volume 1, (1951), pages 79-85 and 637/638, Verlag Urban & Schwarzenberg, Munich - Berlin). Particularly suitable are screw pumps.

The previous statements apply to the preferred mode of operation, in which the 1st and 2nd stages are carried out without interruption. But it is also possible without further ado prepare the pre-emulsion separately (1st stage), z. B. by combining the emulsifier / water mixture and one Part of the water-insoluble substance via a pump. Mixing is particularly preferred here by means of a Worm or gear pump and then fed into the stirred tank and there with mechanical movement, as indicated, by adding the further water-insoluble substance (2nd stage) the finished, highly concentrated The emulsion is produced and then optionally diluted by adding water to obtain the finished concentrate.

In the mixing apparatus shown in Figure 3, which on a VERT-O-MIX screw mixer from Gericke & Co, Singen / Hohentwiel (FRG), (content 4000 liters) is a mixture of 160 kg emulsifier (ricinoleic acid polyglycol ester with an average of 9 ethylene oxide) and 80 legs of water (adjusted to pH = 3 with hydrochloric acid) and slowly via the injection pump (2) in about 3 1/2 hours a mixture of 960 kg of methyl hydrogen polysxloxane (Viscosity 30 cP at 20 ° C) and 240 kg Dxmethylpolysxloxan (Viscosity 750 cP at 20 ° C) is pumped onto the toothed disk (8) and thus mixed well and quickly with the planetary agitator switched on. The viscosity increases during the addition of the water-insoluble substance strongly. After the addition has ended, the mixture is stirred for a further 1 hour. the The temperature is kept at 20 to 25 ° C during the entire process. Then within 4 hours in portions 28O kg of water are added, then the mixture is stirred for a further 1 hour and then the highly concentrated emulsion obtained bottled via a screw pump. A white, opalescent emulsion is obtained that lasts half a year and longer is constant.

If this emulsion is made to contain 35% by weight of organopolysiloxane when diluted, the emulsion then obtained shows considerable mechanical resistance; because even an hour Moving on the shaker leaves no change recognize. The temperature resistance of this emulsion is also excellent, since the same even after three months Storage at 40 ° C is unchanged and homogeneous.
