Der Schmelzbereich dieser erfindungsgemäßen PoIyäther
liegt im allgemeinen zwischen 110°C und 380"C.
Die Produkte sind farblos bis gelbbraun gefärbt und löslich in z. B. Dimethylformamid, Dimethylsulfoxid, Dimethylacetamid
und N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidon. Sie sind gut beständig gegen Oxydation und saure und basische
Hydrolyse und besitzen gute mechanische Eigenschaften sowie eine gute Formbeständigkeit über einen
weiten Temperaturbereich. Sie können als Harze. Lacke, Filme, Fasern und als nach dem Spritzgieß-, Extrudier-
und Preßverfahren hergestellte Formkörper überall dort mit Vorteil verwendet werden, wo hohe
Temperaturbeständigkeit und günstige mechanische Eigenschaften von Bedeutung sind, so z. B. in der Textil-
und Elektroindustrie, im Schienen- und Kraftfahrzcugbau sowie im Schiffs- und Flugzeugbau.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Polyäther können dadurch hergestellt werden, daß man molare Mengen eines Dihalogen-diphenyl-disulfon-aryls

Außer den Hydroxylgruppen können die Aromatkerne zusätzliche Substituenten tragen, z. B. Alkyl- und
Alkoxygruppen mit 1—4 C-Atomen und Halogenatome,
mit der Einschränkung, daß diese Substituenten durch sterische oder sonstige Hinderung die Reaktionsmöglichkeiten der Hydroxylgruppe nicht beeinträchtigen.
Als Kationen tür die Diphenolate kommen diejenigen der Metalle der ersten Haupt^Tuppe des Periodensystems
infrage. Bevorzug; werden die Natrium- und die Kaliumsalze.
An geeigneten, stark polaren organischen Lösungsmitteln seien solche der Sulfoxid- oder Sulfonreihe, beispielsweise
Diäthylsulfoxid, Diphenylsulfoxid, Dimethylsulfon, bevorzugt jedoch Dimelhylsulfoxid und Tetramethylsulfon,
genannt.
Zur Durchführung des Verfahrens wird eine äquimolare
Menge des Dihalogen-diphenyl-disulfon-aryls
und des Dialkaliphenolats in eines der genannten Lösungsmittel oder in ein Gemisch der Lösungsmittel eingetragen
und bei 800C bis 2200C, vorzugsweise 1200C
bis 1800C, ohne Anwendung eines besonderen Katalysators
unter Abspaltung äquimolarer Mengen an Alkalihalogenid zu den erfindungsgemäßen Polyaryläthersulfonen
umgesetzt.
Zur Vermeidung von oxydaliven Nebenreaktionen wird die Umsetzung zweckmäßig unter einer Inertgasatmosphäre,
z. B. Stickstoff, durchgeführt. Will man Polyether mit hohem Molekulargewicht erhalten, so
muß der Wassergehalt des Reaktionsgemisches unter 0,3 Gew,-% liegen.
Da die Aikalisalze mancher Diphenole nur schwer von anhaftendem Wasser zu befreien sind und es daher
oft Schwierigkeiten bereitet, den Wassergehalt des Reaktionsgemisches nach der genannten Durchführungsart
unter 0,3 Gew.-% zu bringen, stellt man die Dialkaliphenolate vorzugsweise in situ her, indem man
das Bisphenol in einer mit Stickstoff fortlaufend gespülten Apparatur in einer ausreichenden Menge des
für die spätere Umsetzung zu verwendenden polaren Lösungsmittel löst und die stöchiometrische Menge
Alkalihydroxid in fester Form oder in wäßriger Lösung hinzugibt, das Gemisch einige Zeit, z. B. 4—8 Stunden,
auf 1200C bis 1600C erhitzt und so das im Gemisch enthaltene
bzw. bei der Salzbildung frei werdende Wasser abdestilliert. Um eine schnellere Entwässerung des
Systems zu erreichen, ist es zweckmäßig, ein Zusatzlösungsmittel, beispielsweise Benzol, Toluol oder
Chlorbenzol, hinzuzugeben und das Wasser azeotrop, gegebenenfalls auch unter vermindertem Druck, mit
dem Zusatzlösungsmittel aus dem Gemisch abzudestillieren.
Zu der entwässerten Lösung des Phenolats in dem polaren Lösungsmittel gibt man dann bei einer Temperatur
von 120° —1600C die stöchiometrische Menge des
Dihalogen-diphenyNdisulfon-aryls, zweckmäßigerweise
als Schmelze oder in einem inerten, wasserfreien Lösungsmittel, wie Benzol, Toluol oder Chlorbenzol, gelöst.
Die Kondensation erfolgt dann durch ein mehrstündiges, B. 2- bis 12stündiges, Erhitzen dieses Gemisches
auf die erwähnten Reaktionstemperaturen. Dabei scheidet sich das bei der Kondensation entstehende Alkalihalogenid
als unlösliches Salz ab; es läßt sich durch Abfiltrieren oder Abschleudern auf eine einfache Weise
von der Polymerlösung abtrennen. Diese wird nach dem Abkühlen entweder mit Wasser oder mit einem niederen
Alkohol, wie Methanol ode·- Äthanol, vermischt. Dabei schcidel sich das Polyaryläthersulfon in fester
Form ab. Es wird abgetrennt und zur Entfernung von Salz- und Lösungsmittelresten gründlich mit Wasser gewaschen.
Aus der CH-PS 4 65 868 sind bereits Polyäthersulfonc
bekannt. Gegenüber diesen, aus Monosulfonen erhältlichen Polyäthersulfonen haben die erfindungsgemäßen,
aus Disulfonen erhältlichen Polyäthersulfone überraschende Vorteile, insbesondere erhöhte Glasumwandlungspunkte
und daraus resultierend verbesserte Wärmebeständigkeiten.

eine stark verbesserte Wärmebeständigkeit aufweist Die mechanischen und elektrischen Eigenschaften bleiben
im Gegensatz zum Polysulfon bis zu einer Tempeln ratur über 200° C erhalten.
Ferner wird das Brandverhalten erheblich verbessert: So verlöscht ein Polysulfonfilm, in eine Gasheizerflamme
gehalten und wieder herausgezogen, nach 11,2 Sek, während ein Polydisulfonfilm schon nach 2,4 Sek. ver-■;
löscht.
Nicht nur das aus obigem Disulfon und Bisphenol-A
gewonnene Polymere zeigt so erheblich verbesserte Eigenschaften, sondern auch die aus Disuflon und aus
anderen Bisphenolkomponenten gewonnenen PoIy-
:ii meren. Als typische Kennzahlen vien hier die für das PoIymerverhalten
besonders wesentlichen Glasumwandlungspunkte weiterer gemäß der Erfindung hersteilbarer
Polydisuifone genannt:

Beispiel I
Polyaryläthersulfon der Formel

102,7 g (0,45 Mol) 2,2-Bis-<4-hydroxyphenyl)-propan
werden in ein Metallgefäß eingewogen und in 900 ml Dimethylsulfoxid gelöst. Das Gefäß wird mit einem
Gaseinleitungsrohr, einem Rührwerk, einem Thermometer, einem Rückflußkühler und einer mit Toluol gefüllten
Wasserauffangvorrichtung versehen. Es wird ein langsamer Stickstoftstrom durch die Apparatur geleitet,
um eine Inertgasatmosphäre zu erzeugen. Dann werden 36 g (0,9 Mol) Natriumhydroxid in fester Form oder als
konzentrierte wäßrige Lösung hinzugefügt und nach dem Lösen des Natriumhydroxids 150—200 ml Toluol
eingetropft. Das so erhaltene Reaktionsgemisch wird 6-8 Stunden auf 140°-150°C erhitzt, wobei das im
Reaktionsgemisch enthaltene und das bei der Phenolatbildung entstehende Wasser kontinuierlich mit dem
Toluol als Azeotrop in die Wasserauffangvorrichtung destilliert und sich dort abscheidet, während das Toluol
wieder in das Reaktionsgemisch zurückläuft. lüt alles
Wasser aus dem Reaktionssystem entfernt, lee:-t man das Wasserauffanggefäß, destilliert das Toluol üb und
gibt bei 120°-14O0C eine Schmelze von 233,7 g (0,45
Mol) 4,4'-Bis-(4-f"ilorphenyl-sulfon)-diphenyläther hinzu.
Anschließend spült man mit etwas wasserfreiem Benzol nach und erhitzt unter Rühren allmählich auf
140° —160°C. Bei dieser Temperatur beläßt man die Reaktionsmischung 6 Stunden, wobei sich das bei der
Kondensation entstehende Natriumchlorid schnell abscheidet. Nach Beendigung der Reaktion wird die abgekühlte
Polymerlösung in schnell gerührtes Wasser eingetragen, wobei sich das erhaltene Polyaryläthersulfon
in fester Form abscheidet. Es wird abgenutschl, sorgfälgewaschen
und unter Vakuum getrocknet. Zur Reinigung wird der erhaltene Polyäther in Methylenchlorid
gelöst, filtriert und in einen Überschuß schnell gerührten Methanols gegossen. Dabei scheidet sich der
Polyäther i . weißen Flocken ab. Er wird abgenutsciit
und getrocknet.
Der erhaltene Polyäther hat die relative Viskosität 1,19 (gemessen an einer Lösung von 0,5 g in 100 ml
Methylenchlorid bei 25°C) und erweicht bei etwa 210"-23O0C. Das mittlere Molekulargewicht, erhalten
aus Streulicl/messungen an einer Methylenchloridlösung,
liegt bei 18 000.

93,1 g ((Vi MoI) 4,4'Dihydroxydiphenyl werden in eine
Apparatur gemäß Beispiel I gebracht und in 1000 ml Dimethyhulfoxid gelöst. Dann wird ein langsamer Stickstoffstrom
durch die Apparatur geleitet und eine Lösung von 4Og(I Mol) Natriumhydroxid in 60 ml Wasser
hinzugegeben. Man erwärmt unter Rühren, bis man eine klare Lösung erhalten hat. und gibt dann 250 ml Toluol
hinzu. Das Gemisch wird so lange auf Rückflußtemperatur erhitzt, bis sich in der Wasserauffangapparatur kein
Wasser mehr abscheidet. Jetzt destilliert man das Toluol ab, gibt nochmals 100 ml wasserfreies Toluol zu,
destilliert dieses ebenfalls ab und gibt bei i3ö=C eine
wasserfreie Schmelze von 259,7 g (0,5 Mol) 4,4'-Bis-(4-chlorphenyl-sulfon)-diphenyläther
hinzu. Anschließend spült man mit etwas wasserfreiem Toluol nach und er hit/.t unter Rühren allmählich auf ! 50" -170'C und be
läßt, je nach dem gewünschten Kondensationsgrad, eim Stunde oder mehrere Stunden bei dieser Temperatur
Zur Gewinnung Hes Reaktionsproduktes wird die abge kühlte Lösung nach dem Abfiltrieren des atisgeschiede
nen Natriumchlorids in einen 4- bis öfachcn Überschul
an Äthanol getropft. Das gefällte Produkt wird abge nutscht, mit Äthanol gewaschen und anschließend unte
Vakuum getrocknet.
Nach 6stündiger Kondensation hat das Produkt eil mittleres fvioiekuiargewichi von ciwa 16 000. Es natitiul
sich um ein grauweißes Pulver, dessen Schmelzbereicl zwischen 260" und 300°C liegt.

In eine Apparatur gemäß Beispiel 1 werden 102,7 g
(0,45 Mol) 2,2-Bis-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-propan und 36 g (0,9 Mol) Natriumhydroxid in fester Form gebracht und
in 900 ml Dimethylsulfoxid gelöst. Dann werden 300 ml Benzol hinzugefügt. Das Gemisch wird 5—6 Stunden
auf 130° C erhitzt, wodurch das bei der Salzbildung entstehende
Wasser durch Azeotropdestillation mit dem Benzol entfernt wird. Ist die Lösung wasserfrei, so
destilliert man das Benzol ab. erhitzt den verbleibenden Rückstand auf 140° — 15O0C und gibt bei dieser Temperatur
226,4 g (0,45 Mol) 4.4'-Bis-(4-chlorphenyl-sulfon)-diphenyl hinzu. Unter Rühren wird jetzt 4 — 6 Stunden
auf 160° —1700C erhitzt. Nach Beendigung der
Reaktion wird die abgekühlte Polymerlösung in einen großen Überschuß stark gerührtes Wasser eingetragen.
Das sich abscheidende Polyaryläthersulfon wird abgenutscht. gewaschen und getrocknet.
Der erhaltene Polyether hat die relative Viskosität 1,16 (gemessen an einer Lösung von 0.5 g in 100 ml Di-

methylformamid bei 25 C) und erweicht zwischen etwE 310" und 3600C.
Die zur Herstellung der erfindungsgemäßen Polyarylether zu verwendenden Dihalogen-diphenyl-di
sulfon-aryle der obigen Formel IV können z.B. nacr
dem Verfahren der deutschen Patentschrift 7 01 95Ί durch Umsetzung eines Mols Diphenyl bzw. Diphenyl
äther mit etwa 2 Mol eines p-Halogenbenzolsulfochlo
rids oder besser eines Mols Diphenyl-4.4'-disulfonsäure chlorid bzw. Diphenyläther-4,4'-disulfonsäurechloric
mit etwa 2 Mol Halogenbenzol in Abwesenheit vor Feuchtigkeit und in Gegenwart einer geringen Menge
Eisen-(III)-chlorid oder eines anderen Lewiskatalysa tors bei erhöhter Temperatur hergestellt werden. Da;
für das letztere Verfahren erforderliche Diphenyl-4.4'
disulfon-säurechlorid bzw. das Diphenyläther-4.4'-di sulfonsäurechlorid ist durch Umsetzung des Diphenyl:
bzw. des Diphenyläthers mit einem Überschuß ar Chlorsulfonsäure auf einfache Weise erhältlich.
Claims (2)
- Patentansprüche;
Polyarylüthersulfonc der Formeln I und II,worinAr einen gegebenenfalls durch Alkylgruppen oder Halogenatome substituierten Diphenylen- oder Naphthylenrest oder einen mehrkernigen zweiwertigen Rest der Formel III,(IM)worinZ ein zweiwertiger aliphatischen, cycloaliphatischer oder araliphatischen Rest mit 1—8 C-Atomen ist, undη eine ganze Zahl von 2 bis 150 bedeutet. - 2. Verfahren zur Herstellung der Polyaryläthersulfone des Anspruchs 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet.(D (II)daß man molare Mengen eines Dihalogen-diphenyldisulfon-aryls der Formel IV,Hai(IV)worin Hai Chlor oder Fluor und Ar1 einen Diphenylen- oder Diphenylätherrest bedeutet, und eines Bisphenolats oder mehrerer Bisphenolate der Formel VMe — O —Ar — O Me(V)worin Me ein Alkalimetall bedeutet und Ar die Bedeutung wie in Anspruch 1 hat, in einem stark polaren organischen Lösungsmittel bei Temperaturen zwischen 80° und 2200C, umsetztGegenstand der Erfindung sind Polyaryliithersiilfone der Formeln I und Il—\—f > SO, f V--O / > SO, f > O Ar OY* S so, / S :;/ \ so, -:; % ο Ar o](I) (II)worinAr einen gegebenenfalls durch Alkylgruppen oder Halogenatome substituierten Diphenylen- oder Naphthylenrest oder einen mehrkernigen zweiwertigen Rest der Formel III,
