1,153,528. Aromatic polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 March, 1968 [23 March, 1967], No. 13892/67. Addition to 1,153,035. Heading C3R. Aromatic polymers are obtained by reacting a bis-(halogenopheny] sulphonyl) benzenoid compound, alone or with another dihalogenobenzenoid compound, with an alkali metal hydroxide and/or an organic onium hydroxide by the displacement of alkali metal halide and/or organic onium halide. The bis-(halo. genophenyl sulphonyl) benzenoid compound may have the formula X-C 6 H 4 -SO 2 -Ar- SO 2 -C 6 H 4 -X where X is a halogen atom and Ar is a bivalent aromatic radical derived from benzene, biphenyl, a terphenyl or a fused-ring aromatic hydrocarbon containing not more than three rings. In examples, polymers are obtained by reacting potassium hydroxide with 4,4<SP>1</SP>-bis (4-chlorophenyl sulphonyl) biphenyl, with mixtures of 4,4<SP>1</SP>-bis- (4.chlorophenyl sulphonyl) bisphenyl and bis-(4-chlorophenyl) sulphone, with 1,3-bis-(4-chlorophenyl sulphonyl) benzene and with 1,5-bis-(4-chlorophenyl sulphonyl) naphthalene.
