Abstract
1308139 Aromatic suiphones IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 July 1970 [31 July 1969 19 March 1970] 38437/69 and 13354/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein Y represents a fluorine atom or a hydroxy group, m is 0 or 1; Ar and Ar<SP>1</SP> are bivalent aromatic radicals (which also include certain -S- containing; -N- containing; -O- containing; and, -S- and -O- containing heterocyclic rings such that the compounds H-Ar-H and H-Ar<SP>1</SP>-H contain two hydrogen atoms that are capable of replacement by reaction with an aromatic sulphonyl chloride under Friedel-Crafts conditions in two distinct stages; and (when Y is hydroxy) the alkali metal salts thereof. These compounds may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula A-SO 2 -X, where X is a halogen atom or a hydroxy group, with a compound of formula HB under conditions in which HX is eliminated to form a compound A-SO 2 -B, where A and B are appropriately selected from the groups preferably in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and optionally converting the fluoro group into a hydroxy group and optionally forming an alkali metal hydroxide of the phenol. The following compounds are specified: 4-(4- chlorophenylsulphonyl) - 4<SP>1</SP> - (4 - fluorophenylsulphonyl) biphenyl; 4 - (4 - chlorophenylsulphonyl) - 4<SP>1</SP> - (4 - hydroxyphenylsulphonyl) biphenyl and its potassium salt; 4-(4-chlorophenylsulphonyl) - 4<SP>1</SP> - (4 - fluorophenylsulphonyl) - p - terphenyl; and 4 - (4<SP>1</SP> - [4<SP>11</SP>- chlorophenylsulphonyl]biphenylyl) sulphonyl- 4<SP>1</SP>-(4-fluorophenylsulphonyl)-biphenyl.
