Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Alkylenglykolestern durch Umsetzen von ein- und mehrwertigen
Carbonsäuren mit Alkylenoxiden.
Es ist bekannt, daß die üblichen in Gegenwart basischer
Katalysatoren durchgeführten Alkoxylierungen von Carbonsäuren zur Herstellung der Monoester von Alkylenglykolen im allgemeinen nicht geeignet sind, da hierbei die Diesterbildung sowohl aus dem Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoester und nicht umgesetzter Carbonsäure als auch durch Disproportionierung von gebildetem Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoester zu Diester und Polyalkylenglykol begünstigt wird. Es ist daher bereits vorgeschlagen worden, andere Katalysatoren bei der Alkoxylierung von Carbonsäuren einzusetzen. Die
US-Patentschrift 2 910 490 beschreibt ein Verfahren zur
Herstellung von Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoestern durch Umsetzen von Carbonsäuren mit Alkylenoxiden unter Verwendung von Ammoniumhalogeniden als Katalysatoren.
In der deutschen Auslegeschrift 1 248 660 werden für den selben Zweck Thioäther als Katalysatoren vorgeschlagen.
Aus der holländischen Patentanmeldung 66.14650 ist die
Katalysatoren durchgeführten Alkoxylierungen von Carbonsäuren zur Herstellung der Monoester von Alkylenglykolen im allgemeinen nicht geeignet sind, da hierbei die Diesterbildung sowohl aus dem Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoester und nicht umgesetzter Carbonsäure als auch durch Disproportionierung von gebildetem Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoester zu Diester und Polyalkylenglykol begünstigt wird. Es ist daher bereits vorgeschlagen worden, andere Katalysatoren bei der Alkoxylierung von Carbonsäuren einzusetzen. Die
US-Patentschrift 2 910 490 beschreibt ein Verfahren zur
Herstellung von Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoestern durch Umsetzen von Carbonsäuren mit Alkylenoxiden unter Verwendung von Ammoniumhalogeniden als Katalysatoren.
In der deutschen Auslegeschrift 1 248 660 werden für den selben Zweck Thioäther als Katalysatoren vorgeschlagen.
Aus der holländischen Patentanmeldung 66.14650 ist die

Verwendung von SuIfoxiden und aus den deutschen Auslegeschriften
1 154 479 und 1 157 625 die Verwendung von
wäßrigen Carbonsäureamiden als Katalysatoren für die genannte Umsetzung bekannt.
Insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Verwendung der Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoester
als Ausgangsstoffe für die Herstellung von Tensiden vom Sulfattyp v/eisen die genannten
Katalysatoren Nachteile auf, die, ihre Abtrennung erforderlich machen. Thioäther und Sulfoxide haben bzw. ergeben
bei der Alkoxylierung einen unangenehmen Geruch; Ammoniumhalogenide, insbesondere solche mit längeren Alkylresten,
bilden im Gemisch mit. anionaktiven Tensiden unerwünschte Neutralsalze. Carbonsäureamide schließlich können
bereits bei Durchführung der Alkoxylierung zu Störungen führen, da sie bei Temperaturen um 100 C zu hydrolysieren
beginnen und auch Veranlassung zu Nebenreaktionen geben können.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß sich diese Nachteile vermeiden lassen, wenn man als Katalysatoren für die Herstellung von
Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoestern durch Alkoxylierung von Carbonsäuren Aminoxide'verwendet.
Brauchbare Katalysatoren sind Aminoxide der allgemeinen
Formel

in der R., R ,. R-, aliphatische Reste mit insbesondere
1-24 C-Atomen, cycloaliphatische, heterocyclische und/oder aromatische Reste bedeuten, entsprechende di-

und polyfunktionelle Aminoxide, in denen die Aminoxid-Gruppierungen
über 2wertige aliphatische, cycloaliphatische, heterocyclische und/oder aromatische Reste mit vorzugsweise
1-24 C-Atomen verknüpft sind, sowie mono- und polyfunktionelle Aminoxide in denen die Aminoxld-Gruppierung
Glied eines gesättigten oder ungesättigten heterocyclischen Ringsysteras ist.
Sämtliche an das Aminoxid-Stickstoffatom gebundenen Reste
können solche Substituenten tragen, die die Alkoxylierungsreaktion nicht stören z.B. Halogen oder Äther-Gruppierungen.
Als Beispiele für erfindungsgemäß verwendbare Aminoxide sind zu nennen: Trimethylaminoxid, Dimethyldodecylaminoxid,
Dirnethyloctadecylarainoxid, Dioctadecylmethylaminoxid,
Ν,Ν,Ν1 ,N'-Tetramethyl-äthylendiamindioxid, Ν,Ν,Ν',N!,-Tetramethyldodekamethylendiamindioxid,
Pyridin-N-oxid, N-Methyl-piperidin-N-oxid, N-Methyl-morpholin-N-oxid.
Vorzugsweise werden Aminoxide eingesetzt, die mindestens einen aliphatischen Rest mit 8-24 C-Atomen enthalten
und daher waschaktive Eigenschaften aufweisen.
Die erfindungsgemäß als Katalysatoren einzusetzenden Aminoxide sind in bekannter Weise herstellbar z.B. durch
Umsetzung entsprechender ein- und mehrwertiger tertiärer Amine mit Was^erstoffperoxyd in wäßriger Lösung.
Die Aminoxide können sowohl in wasserfreier Form als auch in Form einer wäßrigen Anpastung, wie sie bei der
bekannten Herstellungsweise anfällt, in der Alkoxylierungsreaktion
ein^^etst werden.
Da die genannten Katalysatoren wie eben geschildert im End-

produkt verbleiben können, ist die anzuwendende Katalysator-Meng'i
nicht kritisch und kann in weiten Grenzen schwanken. Zur Durchführung der Umsetzung ist ein Mengenverhältnis
von 1-5 Gew.fj Aminoxid, bezogen auf eingesetzte Carbonsäure,
im allgemeinen ausreichend. Man kann das Mengenverhältnis
aber auch so wählen, daß nach Sulfatierung der Verfahrensprodukte eine in der Praxis direkt verwendbare
Tensidkombination aus Aminoxiden und Estersulfaten vorliegt,
die in mancher Hinsicht, z.B.im Hinblick auf waschaktive
Wirkung und Hautverträglichkeit, günstigere Eigenschaften als die Estersulfate allein zeigt. In flüssigen Tenaidkombinationen
wirken die Aminoxide darüberhiriaus als Viskositätsregulatoren.
Das erfindungsgemäi?e Verfcihren ist anwendbar auf ein- und
mehrwertige Carbonsäuren, die gesättigte oder ungesättigte geradkettige oder verzweigte aliphatische, cycloaliphatische,
aromatische oder heterocyclische Reste mit vorzugsweise' 1-26 Kohlenstoffatomen enthalten können. Als Beispiele
für die Ausgangsstoffe sind zu nennen: Essigsäure, Buttersäure, Cyclohexancarbonsäure, Benzoesäure, Glutarsäure,
Adipinsäure, Terephthalsäure, Fettsäure und/oder Fettsäuregemische, wie sie aus den natürlichen Fetten und
ölen durch Verseifung erhalten werden können, durch
Oxidation von Kohlenwasserstoffen-erhaltene Carbonsäuren,
durch Carbonylierung von Olefin- bzw. Acetylenkohlenwasserstoffen
nach bekannten Verfahren herstellbare Carbonsäuren oder die durch Polymerisation ungesättigter
Fettsäuren herstellbaren di- und oligorneren Fettsäuren.
Die in denrerf .!.ndungscfcr.-liic-n Verfahren zur Umsetzung
kommenden Alkylenoxide ::ind vorzugsweise dio gegebenenfalls
Eubctitui-c-rten Alkylenoxide mit 2-4 Kohlenstoff-

atomen beispielsweise Äthylenoxid, Propylenoxid, Butylenoxid,
Epichlorhydrin oder Glycid.
Die Alkylenoxide werden in etwa stöchiometrischen Mengen eingesetzt, d.h. pro Mol n-wertiger Carbonsäure kommen
η Mol Epoxid zur Anwendung. Ein geringfügiger Überschuss an Epoxid kann von Vorteil sein.
Die Umsetzung der Carbonsäuren mit den Epoxiden kann unter den für Alkoxylierungsverfahren üblichen Bedingungen
durchgeführt werden. Es kommen demgemäß Temperaturen . zwischen 20 und 200° C,vorzugsweise 40 - 100° C in Betracht;
es kann sowohl bei Normaldruck als auch unter einem leichten tiberdruck im Autoklaven gearbeitet werden.
Die Verwendung eines Lösungsmittels ist im allgemeinen entbehrlich. In manchen Fällen, z.B. bei der Umsetzung
hochschmelzender Carbonsäuren, kann jedoch die Verwendung eines für Alkoxylierungsreaktionen üblichen Lösungsmittels
z.B. Diglykoldimethyläther oder Dioxan von Vorteil sein. ' .
Zur Durchführung der Umsetzung wird die Carbonsäure bzw. gegebenenfalls das-Carbonsäure-Lösungsmittel-Gemisch mit
der erforderlichen Menge Katalysator versetzt, das Gemisch auf die gewünschte Reaktionstemperatur erwärmt und nach
Verdrängen der Luft aus dem Reaktionsgefäß die berechnete Menge Alkylenoxid flüssig oder gasförmig zugegeben. Die
anfallenden Reaktionsprodukte sind wasserhell und weisen Monoestergehalte zwischen 8o und 99$ auf. Der Rest

zu 100$ besteht aus etwas nicht umgesetzter Carbonsäure
und Diester. Polyglykol ist in den Produkten praktisch nicht enthalten. Die Bestimmung der Monoester-, Diester-
und Polyglykolgehalte" erfolgte nach der von Malkemus
und Swan in The Journal of the American Oil Chemists' Society ^iL s· ?42ff angegebenen Vorschrift. Eine
Aufarbeitung der Verfahrensprodukte ist aufgrund der
hohen Monoestergehalte und aufgrund der Tatsache, daß die als Katalysatoren verwendeten Aminoxide ohne
Störungen zu verursachen im Reaktionsgemisch verbleiben können, im allgemeinen nicht notwendig.

In einen Autoklaven von 5 1 Fassungsvermögen wurden 200 g
(1 Mol) Laürinsäure eingebracht und h g (2 Gew,<£) -wasserfreies
Ti-imethylaminoxid zugegeben. Die Luft im Autoklaven
wurde durch Spülen mit Stickstoff verdrängt. Nachdem der Autoklaveninhalt auf 70 C erwärmt worden war wurden aus
einer Vorratsflasche insgesamt W g (1 Mol) Äthylenoxid
bei Drucken zwischen 0*8 und 9 atü unter Zuhilfenahme
von Stickstoff eingeführt. Die Temperatur lag während der Umsetzung zwischen 70 und 8o° C. Die abgemessene Äthylenoxidmenge
wurde im Verlauf von 3>5 Stunden aufgenommen.
Das resultierende Produkt war wasserhell und enthielt 87,1J Gew.<£ Monoester, 9,0 Gew.% Diester und J>,6 Gew.%
nicht umgesetzte Laürinsäure; Polyäthylenglykol war nicht nachweisbar. (Bei der Angabe für die Produktzusammensetzung
wurde der Gehalt an Katalysator rechnerisch eliminiert).

Die den im folgenden tabellarisch zusammengefaßten Beispielen zugrunde liegenden Versuche wurden analog
Beispiel 1 durchgeführt. Es wurde Jeweils 1 Mol Carbonsäure
eingesetzt. Bei allen Angaben der Endproduktzusammensetzung
wurde der Gehalt an Katalysator rechnerisch eliminiert. In Beispiel 13 und 14 erfolgte die Analyse des
Endproduktes HMR-spektroskopisch bzw. durch Destillation.

Die mit der Erfindung erzielbaren Vorteile bestehen
neben der Möglichkeit Alkylenglykolmonoester von
Carbonsäuren in hohen Ausbeuten zu erhalten vor allem darin, daß eine Abtrennung des Katalysators und damit in den meisten Fällen überhaupt eine Aufarbeitung des Reaktionsgemisches unterbleiben kann. Die Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoester sind damit auf wesentlich
wirtschaftlichere V/eise zugänglich geworden.
neben der Möglichkeit Alkylenglykolmonoester von
Carbonsäuren in hohen Ausbeuten zu erhalten vor allem darin, daß eine Abtrennung des Katalysators und damit in den meisten Fällen überhaupt eine Aufarbeitung des Reaktionsgemisches unterbleiben kann. Die Alkylenglykolcarbonsäuremonoester sind damit auf wesentlich
wirtschaftlichere V/eise zugänglich geworden.
Bei einer nachfolgenden Sulfatierung der Verfahrensprodukte erweist sich die Anwesenheit von Atninoxiden
als besonders vorteilhaft, da Aminoxide mit dem Sulfatierungsmitt.el, z.B. SO^ oder Chlorsulfonsäure
Addukte bilden, und somit einen schonenden Reaktionsablauf gewährleisten. Die Sulfatierungsprodukte zeigen
eine bessere Farbqualität, einen hohen Sulfatiergrad und geringen Mebenproduktgeha.lt, da Hebenreaktionen wie
die bekanntlich durch Lewis-Säuren katalysierten
Umesterungen weltestgehend ausgeschaltet v/erden. Die Aminoxld-Addukte
werden bei der Neutralisation der Sulfatlerungsgemische
unter Ruckbildung der ursprünglich eingesetzten Aminoxide wieder gespalten,

Claims (4)
- in Gegenwart von Katalysatoren, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß als Katalysatoren Aminoxide eingesetzt werden.
- 2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß als Katalysatoren Aminoxide mit mindestens einem alphatischen Rest mit 8 - 24 C-Atomen eingesetzt werden.
- 3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1-2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß Alkylenoxide mit 2-4 kohlenstoffatomen zur Umsetzung kommen.
- 4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1-3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß Umsetzung bei Temperaturen zwischen 20 und 200 vorzugsweise kO - 100° C unter Normal- oder überdruck durchgeführt wird.Henkel 4 Cie GmbH(Dr. Haas)009833/2063
