Verfahren zur Metallisierung von geformten Gebilden aus
thermoplastischen Kunststoffen
Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Metallisierung
von geformten Gebilden aus thermoplastischen Kunststoffen nach bekannten Verfahren. Das Verfahren ist besonders dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man als geformte Gebilde solche verwendet, die aus Polymerisaten bestehen, welche durch Pfropfung von Vinylchlorid, ggf.
unter Zusatz von mit Vinylchlorid mischpolymerisierbaren, äthylenischungesättigten
Monomeren, auf Polymerisate von Dienen hergestellt worden sind.
Es ist bekannt, daß man Homo-Polymerisate des Vinylchlorids nicht
auf chemo-galvanischem Wege zu einem 'echten Verbundmaterial aus
Metall und Kunststoff metallisieren kann. Die erzielten Haftfestigkeiten der nach bekannten Verfahren aufgebrachten Metallfilme liegen
unter 0,2kg/25 mm Breite gemäß DIN 40Θ02. Pur praktische Zwecke
müssen jedoch die Haftfestigkeiten größer als 1,0 kg/25mm Breite
sein . ,
Es ist weiterhin bekannt, daß man Formkörper aus ABS-Polymerisaten
zu einem echten Verbundmaterial auf chemo-galvanischem Wege metallisieren
kann. Es wurde nun versucht, duroh Kompoundierung von ABS-Polymerisaten mit PVC-Sorten hergestellte Formkörper zu metallisieren.

Bei einem ABS-Gehalt von über 50 Gewichtsprozent liegen die Haftfestigkeiten
bei 1,0 kg/25 mm Breite. Dieses zeigt, daß durch Zusatz
von PVC zu ABS-Polymerisaten eine wesentliche Verschlechterung
der Haftfestigkeit eintritt bzw. durch Zusatz von ABS-Polymerisaten
zum PVC keine wesentliche Verbesserung der an sich schlechten Haftfestigkeiten
des Metallfilms von PVC erreicht wird.
Es wurde nun überraschenderweise gefunden, daß man erheblich verbesserte
Haftfestigkeiten von Metallflächen auf PVC dann erreicht, wenn man die Metallisierung von geformten Gebilden aus thermoplastischen
Kunststoffen so führt, daß man als geformte Gebilde solche verwendet, die aus Polymerisaten bestehen, welche durch
Pfropfung von Vinylchlorid, ggf. unter Zusatz von mit Vinylchlorid mischpolymerisierbaren, äthylenisch-ungesättigten Monomeren, auf
Polymerisate von Dienen hergestellt worden sind. Die erzielten Haftfestigkeiten sind besonders hoch, wenn das Pfropfpolymerisat
80 - 95 % einpolymerisiertes VC enthält. Gute Eigenschaften werden
dann erhalten, wenn der VC-Gehalt des Pfropfpolymerisate mehr als
50 Gewichtsprozent beträgt·
Als Pfropfgrundlage werden Polymerisate von Dienen verwendet.
Geeignete Diene aus denen derartige Polymerisate hergestellt werden können, sind beispielsweise Butadien, Chloropren, Isopren u.a.
Zur Pfropfung geeignete Polymere von Dienen sind u.a. Naturkautschuk
(als Latex z.B.),Butadien-Polymerisate, Chlorbutadien-Polymerisate,
sowie deren Copolymerisate, beispielsweise solche unter Zusatz von Styrole Der Anteil des Comonomeren ist nicht kritisch. Er kann 0,1
bis 40 Gewichtsprozent, vorzugsweise 5-20 Gewichtsprozent des zu
pfropfenden Polymerisats betragen. Die Molekular-gewichte der zu
pfropfenden Dien-Polyraeriaate können innerhalb eines weiten Bereichs

variiert werden. So können beispielsweise als Pfropfgrundlage
auch niedermolekulare Dien-Polymerisate mit Molekular-gewichten
im Bereioh von 1.000 bis 5·000 verwendet werden, die beispielsweise mit Ziegler-Katalysatoren zugänglich sind.
Die Pfropfpolymerisation kann in bekannter Weise in Emulsion, Suspension oder in Substanz im Temperaturbereich von -60 bis +800C
mittels Radikalbildnern, ggf.. unter Zusatz von Reglern, durchgeführt werden.
Geeignete, mit Vinylchlorid mischpolymerisierbare, äthylenischungesättigte
Monomere sind beispielsweise Vinylester, wie Vinylacetat, Vinylpropionat u.a., Ester ungesättigter Säuren, wie Acrylsäureester
'-nd Methacrylsäureester, z.B. Methylacrylat, Äthylacrylat,
2-Äthylhexylacrylat, .n-Octylacrylat, Methylmethacrylat, Äthylmethacrylat
u.a., und Vinylidenchlorid sowie verwandte Verbindungen.
Durch Variationen der Zusammensetzungen des vorgelegten Dien-Polymerisats
sowie des Vinylchlorid- bzw. Comonomergehaltes der Pfropfung können die zu metallisierenden Formgebilde dem jeweiligen Anwendungszweck in einem weiten Rahmen angepaßt werden.
Bei Verwendung von geformten Gebilden aus Polymerisaten, welche durch
Pfropfung von Vinylchlorid, ggf. unter Zusatz von mit Vinylchlorid
mischpolymerisierbaren, äthylenisch-ungesättigten Monomeren auf Polymerisate von Dienen hergestellt worden sind, werden bei der
Metallisierung überraschenderweise Haftfestigkeiten erreicht, die die gestellten Forderungen bei weitem übertreffen. Zur Erzielung
hoher Haftfestigkeiten kann der Anteil des Dien-Polymerisats im
Vinyl-Pfropfpolymerisat relativ gering sein. Die hergestellten
Überzüge besitzen großen Oberflächenglanz und hohe Oberflächenhärte·

Die Formgebung der Pfropfpolymerisate kann nach bekannten Verfahren
erfolgen. Den Formmassen können vor der Verarbeitung die für PVC üblichen Stabilisatoren zugesetzt werden.
Die Metallisierung kann in bekannter Weise nach, folgender Arbeitsweise,
die je nach Formstück modifizierbar ist, durchgeführt werden:
1. Entfetten: z.B. mit 40 ^iger NaOH
2. Beizen: z.B. mit Chromschwefelsäure (40 g K„Cr?07 +2Og H?0 +
5OO ml konzentrierte Schwefelsäure). Beiztemperaturen: 20 C bis
700C, Beizzeiten im Bereich von I5 bis 90 Minuten.
3. Neutralisieren: z.B. mit 20 ^iger (H_0) NaHSO--Lösung.
4. Sensibilisieren: z.B. mit Stannochlorid-Lösung (35 S SnCl„ +
50 ecm HCl konz. + 1000 ecm H9O).
5. Aktivieren: z.B. mit Silbernitrat-Lösung (2g AgNO, in 50 ecm H2
+10 ecm NH.OH konz. und auf 1000 ecm H3O auffüllen)»
6. Chemische Erzeugung der Grundschicht: z.B. Eintauchen des
Kunststoffs in eine Lösung, die im Verhältnis 1:1 aus Lösung A und Lösung B hergestellt wurde:
Lösung A: 51»8 g Kupfersulfat
8,2 g Nickelchlorid
76,6 g 37 $ige wässrige Formaldehyd-Lösung 532 ecm Wasser
Lösung B: 23,9 g NaOH
95f5 g Kalium-natrium-tratrat
8,2 g Na2CO5

In analoger Weise kann man auch andere Grundschichten, z.B. Ni
oder Ag, chemisch erzeugen.

7· Die Grundschicht wurde dann in bekannter Weise mit Kupfer galvanisch verstärkt. Der Cu-FiIm besaß eine Dicke von 4O - 50W
vor der Messung der Haftfestigkeiten. Aber auch Ni-f Cr-, Ag-,
Au-Filme sind möglich.
Die Torteile des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens zeigen die
nachstehenden Beispiele:
Es wurden zwei Typenmhen miteinander verglichen. Die Reihe 1
ist ein Compound, während die Reihe 2 die erfindungsgemäße
Verwendung des Pfropfpolymerisats zeigt.
Es wurde ein Vinylchlorid-Homopolymerisat · ■ mit einem K-Wert
von 60 mit wechselnden Mengen eines ABS Polymerisats compoundiert. Bei dem ABS Polymerisat handelt es sich um die
Type Cycolac EP 3510 der Marbon Chemical Division. Den Compounds
wurde vor der Verarbeitung 2 Gewichts^ eines Zinnstabilisators
zugesetzt, der im Handel unter der Bezeichnung Advastab M I7
erhältlich ist, (n-C.Hg)2 Sn (S-CH2-COO-C8H1_)2. Es wurden
4 mm starke Platten gepreßt und in der beschriebenen Weise
metallisiert. Anschließend wurde die Haftfestigkeit der erhaltenen Metallfilme nach DIN 40Θ02 bestimmt. Die erhaltenen Werte
zeigt die nachstehende Tabelle 1.

Zur Pfropfung wurden drei verschiedene Typen an Dien-Polymerisaten
als Emulsion vorgelegt.
Typ 1t Copolymerisat aus Butadien und Styrol mit einem
Styrolgehalt von 20 Gewichts?£.
Typ 2s Naturkautschuk (sogenannter Zentrifugenlatex).
Typ 3s Poly-2-öhlorbutadien.
Die Pfropfpolymerisation erfolgte in bekannter Weise in Emulsion mit wasserlöslichen Peroxyden. Anstelle der Emulsions-Polymerisation
kann selbstverständlich auch die Block- oder Suspensionspolymerisation angewandt werden. Die Polymerisationstemperatur
betrug im vorliegenden Falle 55 G. Die Polymerisation wurde abgebrochen, sobald der angegebene Gehalt an Vinylchlorid im
Pfropfpolymerisat erreicht war. Die erhaltenen Pfropfpolymerisate wurden ebenfalls nach Zugabe von 2 Gewichts^ eines Zinnstabilisators,
der im Handel unter der Bezeichnung Advastab M erhältlich ist (n-C.Ho)o Sn (S-CH0-COO-G0H^)0 . . .

Platten verpreßt und für die Metallisierung in der beschriebenen Weise eingesetzt. Anschließend wurden wieder die Haftfestigkeiten
der erhaltenen Metallfilme nach DIN 40802 bestimmt· Die erhaltenen Werte zeigt die Tabelle 2.

Claims (2)
1. Verfahren zur Metallisierung von geformten Gebilden aus
thermoplastischen Kunststoffen nach bekannten Verfahren, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als geformte Gebilde solche
verwendet, die aus Polymerisaten bestehen, welche durch Pfropfung von Vinylchlorid, ggf. unter Zusatz von mit
Vinylchlorid mischpolymerisierbaren, äthylenisch'-unge sättigten
Monomeren,auf Polymerisate von Dienen hergestellt worden sind.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Pfropfpolymerisat 80 - 95 Gewichtsprozent einpolymerisiertes
Vinylchlorid enthält.
