Polyoxymethylene aus Trioxan oder trioxanhaltigen Monomerenmischungen, die zur Herstellung von Formkörpern,
wie Rohren, Profilen, Flaschen, Folien und Spritzgußartikeln, Verwendung finden sollen, müssen
eine ganz bestimmte Schmelzviskosität besitzen. Es ist vorteilhaft, diese Schmelzviskosität schon bei der Polymerisation
einzustellen. So ist es z. B. möglich, die Schmelzviskosität durch Variation der Polymerisationstemperatur oder der Katalysatorkonzentration zu verändern.
In beiden Fällen wird jedoch auch die Poly- ίο merisationsgeschwindigkeit und der Umsatz so stark
beeinflußt, daß die technische Durchführung der Polymerisation große Schwierigkeiten bereitet. Günstiger
ist es, in bekannter Weise bei der Polymerisation Wasser, Alkohole oder_bestimmte — C-O — C-Verbindungen,
wie z. B. Äther oder Acetale, als Regler zuzusetzen. Diese Verbindungen wirken als Kettenabbrecher und bilden dabei gleichzeitig eine zweite
Polymerkette (Übertragungsreaktion). Allerdings vermindern viele der bekannten Regler gleichfalls die
Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeit oder den Umsatz. Andere, wie z. B. die Äther oder Ester, sind wenig
wirksam, so daß sie in hoher Konzentration eingesetzt werden müssen.
Es wurde nun ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polymerisaten oder Copolymerisaten des Trioxans
durch Polymerisieren von Trioxan für sich allein oder mit anderen für die Copolymerisation des Trioxans
bekannten Monomeren mittels für die Polymerisation bzw. Copolymerisation des Trioxans bekannter Katalysatoren
in Gegenwart von Estern bei Temperaturen von —50 bis +1000C gefunden, das dadurch gekennzeichnet
ist, daß man als Ester Borsäureester der allgemeinen Formel
B(OR)3
verwendet, in der R einen Alkyl-, Cycloalkyl- oder Arylrest bedeutet.
Erfindungsgemäß verwendete Ester der Borsäure sind z. B. der Trimethylester, aber auch der Triäthyl-,
Tripropyl-, Triisobutyl- oder Stearylester, ferner auch aromatische oder cycloaliphatische Ester, wie Triphenyl-
und Tricyclohexylborat. Borsäureester sind hochaktiv, d. h., sie reagieren praktisch quantitativ
mit dem polymerisierenden Trioxan. Dabei verleihen sie dem Polymeren stabile Endgruppen, die bei einer
Nachbehandlung und Weiterverarbeitung des Polymeren nicht abgespalten werden. Dieser Befund ist
deshalb besonders überraschend, weil Carbonsäureester nur eine geringe Reglerwirkung zeigen und dem
Polymeren nur teilweise stabile Endgruppen verleihen. Darüber hinaus haben die Borsäureester den Vorteil,

daß sie den Verlauf der Polymerisation in bezug auf Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeit und Umsatz praktisch
nicht beeinflussen. Schließlich sind Borsäureester auch in Gegenwart von Sauerstoff lagerfähig. Äther und
Acetale dagegen bilden leicht Peroxyde, welche die Stabilität der geregelten Polymerisate beeinträchtigen.
Die Borsäureester können bei der Homopolymerisation des Trioxans oder bei dessen Copolymerisation
mit anderen für die Copolymerisation des Trioxans bekannten Monomeren eingesetzt werden. Geeignete
Monomeren für die Copolymerisation sind z. B. Verbindungen der Formel

und η — 0 bis 3 bedeuten, wie Epichlorhydrin, Äthylenoxyd, 1,3-Dioxolan, Diäthylenglykolformal,
1,4-Butandiolformal, 1,3-Dioxan, 4-Phenyldioxolan,
Propylenoxyd, Phenoxypropenoxyd, ferner cyclische Ester, z. B. /3-Propiolacton, und Vinylverbindungen,
wie Styrol oder Acrylnitril.
Diese Monomeren werden neben Trioxan bevorzugt in Mengen von 1 bis 50 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf
das Trioxan, eingesetzt.
Die Konzentration der zu verwendenden Borsäureester hängt von dem gewünschten Schmelzindex und
von der Reinheit der polymerisierenden Monomeren ab. Mit steigenden Mengen an Borsäureester sinkt das
Molekulargewicht und damit die Schmelzviskosität der Polymeren, während die Konzentration ihrer
stabilen Endgruppen zunimmt. Sehr reine Monomere

benötigen eine größere Menge an Regler als unreine Monomere, liefern bei der Polymerisation dafür aber
stabilere Polymere.
Im allgemeinen arbeitet man mit Reglerkonzentrationen zwischen 0,001 und 5 Gewichtsprozent, vorzugsweise
0,001 und 0,5 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf die Monomeren.
Im übrigen können alle sonstigen Bedingungen so gewählt werden, wie sie für die Polymerisation bzw.
Copolymerisation des Trioxans bekannt sind, d. h., er werden dieselben Katalysatoren, z. B. Säuren und
Lewis-Säuren, dieselben Katalysatorkonzentrationen, z. B. 0,001 bis 1 °/0, und dieselben Temperaturen, je
nach Verfahren —50 bis +1000C, angewandt.
Geeignete Katalysatoren sind z. B. anorganische Säuren wie Schwefelsäure oder Perchlorsäure, Säurehalogenide
wie Sulfurylchlorid, insbesondere aber Lewis-Säuren wie die Chloride und Fluoride des Bors,
Berylliums, Aluminiums, Titans, Eisens, Zinns, Antimons und Zinks sowie deren Komplexverbindungen.
Gut geeignet sind die in der britischen Patentschrift 943 684 erwähnten Katalysatoren.
Auch die verfahrensmäßige Durchführung der Polymerisation
kann nach den bekannten Methoden erfolgen. Vorzuziehen ist die Polymerisation in der Schmelze
des Trioxans zwischen 60 und 900C, es kann jedoch
auch eine Polymerisation in Lösung, in Suspension oder in festem Zustand, gegebenenfalls unter Einwirkung
ionisierender Strahlung, angewandt werden.
Meist ist es ratsam, die Polymeren einer üblichen Nachbehandlung und Stabilisierung zu unterziehen.
So empfiehlt es sich, nach der Polymerisation den Katalysator zu neutralisieren. Etwa noch vorhandene
instabile Polymeranteile können durch einen der bekannten thermischen und/oder alkalischen Nachbehandlungsmethoden
entfernt werden. Da die erfindungsgemäß verwendeten Borsäureester dem Polymeren stabile Endgruppen verleihen, besitzen die Polymeren
einen geringeren instabilen Polymeranteil als nach bekannten Verfahren hergestellte Trioxanpolymere.
Na.ch einer geeigneten Stabilisierung mit bekannten Stabilisatoren, ζ. B. Oxydationsstabilisatoren, wie Bisphenolen
und Thermostabilisatoren, z. B. Amiden oder Amidinen, sind die Polymeren nach dem Extrusions-
oder Spritzgußverfahren ausgezeichnet verarbeitbar.
Die durch die Regelung bei der Polymerisation bewirkte Molekulargewichtserniedrigung äußert sich
in einer Erniedrigung der. Viskositäten der Schmelze und der Lösungen der Polymeren. Als Maß für die
Schmelzviskosität dient der Schmelzindex Z2, gemessen
bei 190° C bei 2,16 kg Belastung nach ASTM D-1238. Die Viskosität der Lösung wurde durch Bestimmung
der reduzierten spezifischen Viskosität r\sp (0,5 g Poly-
meres in 100 cm3 2%iger Lösung von Diphenylamin
in Butyrolacton bei 14O0C) gemessen.
Beispiel 1 und Vergleichsversuche
Jeweils 100 g Trioxan werden unter Ausschluß von Feuchtigkeit bei 7O0C mit l,5mMol der in der
Tabelle angegebenen Regler versetzt. Anschließend wird die Polymerisation durch Zugabe von jeweils
0,01 g p-Nitrophenyldiazoniumfluorborat ausgelöst. Nach einer Stunde bei 70° C werden die Polymerisatproben
zerkleinert und mit Methanol in Gegenwart von 1% Triäthylamin ausgekocht. Die Bestimmung
des instabilen Anteils erfolgt durch halbstündiges Erhitzen einer 10%igea Polymerlösung in Benzylalkohol,
der I0I0 Triäthanolamin enthält. Bei dieser
Behandlung werden instabile Polymeranteile vollständig zersetzt.
Aus nachstehender Tabelle geht hervor, daß Borsäuretrimethylester gegenüber den z. B. aus der
französischen Patentschrift 1 271 297 bekannten Reglern eine stärkere Erniedrigung der Viskosität der
Polymeren bewirkt und daß die damit geregelten

Trioxan wird bei 800C durch 0,015 Gewichtsprozent
p-Nitrophenyldiazoniumfluorborat polymerisiert. In Abwesenheit von Regler besitzt das Polymere eine
reduzierte Viskosität von 1,02. 0,05 Gewichtsprozent
Triäthylborat erniedrigen die Viskosität auf 0,52, 0,1 Gewichtsprozent auf 0,39.
Eine Lösung von 2 Gewichtsprozent Äthylenoxyd in Trioxan wird bei 65° C durch 2 cm3 gasförmiges
BF3 (1:10 verdünnt mit Stickstoff) polymerisiert.
Der Schmelzindex z2 des Polymeren wird durch 0,06 Gewichtsprozent
Borsäuretriphenylester von 0,7 auf 10,3 erhöht.
Ein Copolymeres aus Trioxan und 4 Gewichtsprozent Dioxolan wird durch Polymerisation mit
0,01· Gewichtsprozent BF3-Diburylätherat bei 70°C hergestellt. In Gegenwart von 0,7 Gewichtsprozent
Borsäuretrimethylester polymerisiertes Produkt hat eine reduzierte Viskosität von 0,09 und besitzt nur
noch einen geringen unstabilen Anteil. Demgegenüber hat das ohne Regler hergestellte Polymere eine
reduzierte Viskosität von 1,32.
Claims (1)
- Patentanspruch:Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polymerisaten oder Copolymerisaten des Trioxans durch. Polymerisieren von Trioxan für sich allein oder mit anderen für die Copolymerisation des Trioxans bekannten Monomeren mittels für die Polymerisation bzw. Copolymerisation des Trioxans bekannter Katalysatoren in Gegenwart von Estern bei Temperaturen von —50 bis +1000C, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als Ester Borsäureester der allgemeinen FormelB(OR)3verwendet, in der R einen Alkyl-, Cycloalkyl- oder Arylrest bedeutet.In Betracht gezogene Druckschriften:
