Description

Process for finishing threads made of polyvinyl alcohols It is known that aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol by the dry or wet spinning process Can be spun into threads of high strength, but because of their sensitivity to water have not found their way into the textile industry. To eliminate water sensitivity many methods have been proposed, e.g. B. are physical treatments applied, such as stretching, heating, etc. In addition, one has the spinning solutions or the Treatment baths, salts, tanning compounds, etc. added. It is also common The action of aldehydes, be it in the spinning solution or in the felling baths, is suggested been. Satisfactory results are not achieved with the known methods.

It has been found that by treating threads made of polyvinyl alcohols, which can be prepared in any way, with an aqueous mineral acid, optionally saline formaldehyde solution then achieved a special effect will if this treatment is only after stretching the dried and under tension heated threads. The main salts contained in the baths are alkali chlorides and / or perchlorates into consideration. The treatment bath is said to contain formaldehyde be saturated, the content of hydrogen chloride or superchloric acid should be about 1 to 5 ° / o. The composition of the bath may e.g. B. with regard to the formaldehyde content, acidity, salt content etc. can be changed. This measure is particularly used in the case of several baths, whereby Art the addition of acids can be changed. The treatment baths are appropriate initially saturated with alkali chlorides, they can then be free of alkali chlorides until completion be.

The threads treated in this way have a considerably increased utility value, they are practically insensitive to water, and they are resistant to boiling and shrinking. In the process according to the invention, the fact that, compared with the known processes in which aldehyde and salts are also used, only a fraction of the time is required for the treatment is particularly advantageous from an economic point of view. EXAMPLE 1 A water-sensitive thread made of polyvinyl alcohol produced by a wet spinning process is drawn, dried, heated under tension and treated at 70 ° for 10 minutes in a bath of the following composition 65 parts by weight formaldehyde, 37%, 25 concentrated hydrochloric acid, 10 table salt. The thread has become boil-proof and shrink-proof. Example 2 A polyvinyl alcohol thread produced by a dry spinning process is drawn, dried, heated under tension and treated in the following bath, which consists of 84 parts by weight of formaldehyde, 36%, 4 hyperchloric acid, 12 table salt consists. The bath is allowed to act on the thread for 1 / a hour at 20 °, 5 minutes at 70 ° and 5 minutes at 90 °. The thread has become boil-proof.

Example 3 A thread is produced from polyvinyl alcohol by a wet spinning process, drawn, dried, heated under tension and then treated in several successive baths, first for 1/2 hour at 20 ° in a bath with the following composition: 68 parts by weight of formaldehyde, 36%, 20 concentrated hydrochloric acid, 12 potassium chloride. Then the thread is in a second bath, which 80 parts by weight of formaldehyde, 36%, 12 sodium chloride, 8 concentrated hydrochloric acid contains, treated further for 10 minutes at 70 °.

A third bath, which does not contain sodium chloride, is then left to act 85 parts by weight of formaldehyde, 36%, 15 11 concentrated hydrochloric acid consists. This treatment lasts 5 minutes at 90 °. The thread has become completely boil-proof and shrink-proof. Example 4 A polyvinyl alcohol thread produced by the wet spinning process is drawn, dried, heated under tension and treated in the bath specified below in such a way that the temperature rises from 20 to 80 ° within one hour: 66 parts by weight formaldehyde, 36%, 33 concentrated hydrochloric acid, 1 sodium perchlorate. The thread has become completely boil-proof and shrink-proof.
