Abstract
The modification is carried out by reacting the copolymers with methanolic sodium methylate solution containing 1 to 30% by mass of sodium methylate and 0.03 to 4.45% by mass of sodium hydroxide, at melt temperatures of 343 to 493 K. According to this process, products be obtained with a narrow molecular weight distribution and very low gel content.
Description
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of partially or completely crosslinked ethene-vinyl acetate copolymers in which the ester groups are partially substituted by hydroxyl groups.
It is known to crosslink ethene-vinyl acetate copolymers by metal alcoholates. As crosslinkers, for example, alkali metal alkoxides (DD-PS 7038) and alkoxides of the general formula Me 2 (OR) x , (DD-PS 70387), and Me 3 (Me 2 (OR) x ), (DD-PS 703386) used in which Me 2 is a metal of valence 2 to 5, Me 3 is a mono- or divalent metal and χ is a number from 2 to 5. The alkoxides can be used in solid form or dissolved in the corresponding alcohol.
When using alcohol-containing metal alcoholates or solutions of the metal alcoholates in the corresponding alcohol, by removing defined amounts of alcohol from the reaction mixture after defined residence times of the plastic melt in the processing machine, it is possible to obtain selectively partially or totally crosslinked products in which the ester groups are partially replaced by alcoholysis ( DD-PS 206900). For certain applications, the relatively broad molecular weight distribution of the products produced by the aforementioned method has a disadvantageous effect. This effect particularly occurs when solid, alcohol-containing metal alcoholates are used. At melt indexes of the modified products of less than 10 g / 10 minutes, measured at 463 K, gel contents of 0.5 to 5% by mass occur frequently, which considerably limit the range of application of the products.
The aim of the invention is the preparation of modified ethene-vinyl acetate copolymers having improved homogeneity.
The object of the invention is to use such a modifier for the conversion of ethene-vinyl acetate copolymers, which causes a narrow molecular weight distribution and a low gel content of the end products.
This object is achieved by a process for preparing modified ethene-vinyl acetate copolymers having improved homogeneity by reacting the copolymers with solutions of metal alcoholates in the corresponding alcohol at melt temperatures of 343 to 493K, by removing from 5 to 98% by weight of the alcohol from the reaction mixture after a Verw.eilzeit the plastic melt of 15 to 95%, based on the total residence time of the plastic melt in the processing machine, targeted partially or totally crosslinked products can be obtained in which the ester groups by alcoholysis within the limits of 5 to 95% are replaced by hydroxyl groups by using as a modifier according to the invention a solution of 1 to 30% by mass of sodium ethylate in methanol containing 0.03 to 4.45% by mass, preferably 0.12 to 3.35% by mass, of sodium hydroxide contains dissolved form.
The preparation of the modifier solution can be carried out either by reaction of metallic sodium with methanol and subsequent addition of an appropriate amount of water or by reacting caustic soda with methanol, while continuously distilling off water-containing methanol and pure methanol is added in the same amount until the desired conversion is achieved.
The reaction of the modifier solution with the copolymer is carried out in a manner known per se in internal mixers or extrusion machines.
Surprisingly, the modified ethene-vinyl acetate copolymers have a significantly narrower molecular weight distribution and significantly lower gel contents than corresponding comparative products.
An ethene-vinyl acetate copolymer having a vinyl acetate content of 31.5 mass% and a melt index of 175g per 10 minutes, measured at 463K, is passed through a twin screw extruder having a diameter of 28mm with a throughput of 2.0kg / hr and a screw length of 929 mm. The temperatures of the individual heating zones are in the range of 383 to 473 K. In the plastic melt 55 ml / h of a methanolic sodium methoxide solution having a sodium methylate content of 19Ma .-% and a sodium hydroxide content of 1.56Ma .-%, by means of a metering pump injected. 130 mm after the injection point, 90% by weight of the free methanol are removed from the plastic melt by means of vacuum degassing. The product leaving the extruder is pelletized. The properties of the modified copolymer are contained in Table 1.
