Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及有机发光显示器及其驱动方法,尤其涉及可以限制其亮度的有机发光显示器及其驱动方法。
背景技术
近来已经开发了各种轻薄平板显示器来替代阴极射线管(CRT)。具有高发光效率、亮度和响应速度以及大视角的发光显示器特别受到广泛关注。
发光显示器可以是使用有机发光二极管(OLED)的有机显示器和使用无机发光二极管(LED)的无机显示器。OLED包括阳极、阴极和布置在阳极和阴极之间的有机发光层,从而通过电子和空穴的合并来发光。与OLED不同,无机LED包括由诸如PN结半导体之类的无机材料形成的发光层。
图1显示常规有机发光显示器的结构。参照图1,常规有机发光显示器包括像素单元10、数据驱动器20、扫描驱动器20、和电源单元40。

发明内容

本发明公开一种有机发光显示器,包括:具有像素的像素单元,用于接收扫描信号、发光控制信号和数据信号来显示图像;亮度控制器,用于限制像素单元的亮度;扫描驱动器,用于向像素单元发送扫描信号和发光控制信号;和数据驱动器,用于使用视频数据产生数据信号并向像素单元发送数据信号。亮度控制器通过相加一帧中的视频数据来产生帧数据,并且当帧数据的数值不小于第一值时限制像素单元的亮度,并且当帧数据的数值不大于第二值时不限制像素单元的亮度。

降低像素发光的时间相应地降低了提供电流的时间,由此降低了流过像素单元100的电流量。
为了控制像素单元100在一帧中的发光时间,亮度控制单元200可以控制通过发光控制信号线E1、E2、…、En-1和En发送的发光控制信号的脉冲宽度来控制发光时间。当脉冲宽度大时,流过像素单元100的电流量大,使得像素单元100的整体亮度100没有降低。另一方面,当脉冲宽度小时,少量电流流过像素单元100,使得像素单元100的整体亮度100降低。
用于将数据信号提供到像素单元100的数据驱动器300接收具有红、蓝、和绿分量的视频数据并产生数据信号。数据驱动器300耦合到像素单元100的数据线D1、D2、…、Dm-1和Dm来将所产生的数据信号施加到像素单元100。
扫描驱动器400经由扫描线S1、S2、…Sn-1和Sn和发光控制信号线E1、E2、…、En-1和En分别向像素单元100提供扫描信号和发光控制信号。从数据驱动器300输出的数据信号被发送到(向其发送了扫描信号的)像素110。然后,向其发送了发光控制信号的像素110根据发光控制信号发光。
扫描驱动器400可以分为用于产生扫描信号的扫描驱动电路和用于产生发光控制信号的发光驱动电路。因此,扫描驱动电路和发光驱动电路可以包含在一个部件中,或者它们可以分为不同的部件。
从数据驱动器300输入的数据信号提供到(向其发送扫描信号的)像素单元100的特定行。对应于发光控制信号和数据信号的电流发送到OLED,使得OLED发光来显示图像。这里,在顺序选择所有行(即所有扫描行)之后完成一帧。

数据加法单元210通过相加具有关于在一帧中输入的红、蓝和绿分量的信息的视频数据来提取关于帧数据的信息。帧数据的大数值指示显示高灰度级的大量数据项,并且帧数据的小数值指示显示高灰度级的少量数据项。
根据帧数据的值和查找表220来确定发光控制信号的发光周期的宽度。根据帧数据的高位(upper bit)可以确定发光周期的宽度。通过帧数据的高五位可以获得一帧中的像素单元100的亮度。
随着帧数据的数值增加,像素单元100的亮度增加,并且当像素单元100的亮度不小于预定级时,可以限制像素单元100的亮度。此外,随着像素单元100的亮度的增加,限制比率可以增加来防止像素单元100的亮度过分增加。
当根据像素单元100的亮度的增加统一限制像素单元100的亮度时,当亮度极高时,可能过分限制亮度,使得它可能不能提供足够亮的屏幕,并且整体亮度可能降低。关于当帧表示白色时的亮度预先设置亮度的最大限制比率。因此,亮度的降低不会超过最大限制比率。
根据本发明的示例性实施例,由发光显示器显示的图像可以分为静态图像和运动图像,并且根据图像类型可以改变亮度限制的量。
当帧数据的数值不大于预定级(即,当像素单元100的亮度不高)时,不限制像素单元100的亮度。

表2可以应用到运动图像。这里,当像素单元100的发光率不大于大约14%时,不限制亮度,但是当发光率超过大约14%时,限制亮度,并且随着像素单元100使用最大亮度发光的区域的增加,限制的亮度的量也增加。为了防止过分限制亮度,最大限制比率被限制到大约33%,使得即使大多数像素110使用最大亮度发光,亮度限制率也不大于大约33%。
亮度控制驱动器230从查找表220中接收关于发光控制信号的宽度的数据来输出亮度控制信号。亮度控制信号输入到扫描驱动器400,它根据亮度控制信号输出发光控制信号。特别地,当扫描驱动器400分为扫描驱动电路和发光控制电路时,亮度控制信号被输入到发光控制电路,它根据亮度控制信号输出发光控制信号。
如表1和表2所示,发光控制信号的最大发光周期可以设置为325。由于8位信号可以表示256项,并且9位信号可以表示512项,因此为了产生表1中表示的发光控制信号的发光周期,亮度控制信号最好由9位信号表示。起始脉冲可以用作亮度控制信号,并且可以根据起始脉冲的宽度的变化确定发光控制信号的宽度。
图4A、图4B、图4C和图4D显示根据本发明示例性实施例的其中输入到发光显示器的发光控制信号的发光比率限制到大约最大值的33%的情况。图4A显示发光率和亮度比率之间的数学计算关系。图4B显示发光率和亮度比率之间实际测量关系。图4C显示发光率和电流比率之间的数学计算关系。图4D显示发光率和电流比率之间的实际测量关系。
参照图4A和图4B,当发光率不大于大约30%时,亮度比率基本维持在预定的等级使得屏幕不变暗,然后当发光率不小于大约30%时,亮度比率逐渐降低使得屏幕不十分明亮。
参照图4C和图4D,当存在亮度限制时,流过的电流量大概是没有亮度限制所流过的电流量的30%到35%,由此降低施加到电源单元500的负荷。因此,电源单元500不需要高输出。
图5A、图5B、图5C和图5D显示根据本发明示例性实施例的其中输入到发光显示器的发光控制信号的发光比率限制到大约最大值的50%的情况。图5A显示发光率和亮度比率之间的数学计算关系。图5B显示发光率和亮度比率之间实际测量关系。图5C显示发光率和电流比率之间的数学计算关系。图5D显示发光率和电流比率之间的实际测量关系。
参照图5A和图5B,当发光率不大于大约40%时,亮度比率基本维持在预定的等级使得屏幕不变暗,然后当发光率不小于大约40%时,亮度比率逐渐降低使得屏幕不十分明亮。
参照图5C和图5D,当存在亮度限制时,流过的电流量大概是没有亮度限制所流过的电流量的50%,由此降低施加到电源单元500的负荷。因此,电源单元500不需要高输出。
在根据本发明示例性实施例的有机发光显示器及其驱动方法中,根据有机发光显示器的发光率限制电流的流动,使得可以降低功率消耗。因此,它可以改善画面质量,并且不需要具有高输出的电源单元。
本领域技术人员将理解可以对本发明进行修改而不背离本发明的宗旨或范围。因此,本发明意欲涵盖在所附权利要求及其等效物范围中的本发明的修改和变型。
Claims (19)
1.一种有机发光显示器,包括:
包含像素的像素单元,用于接收扫描信号、发光控制信号和数据信号来显示图像;
亮度控制器,用于限制像素单元的亮度;
扫描驱动器,用于向像素单元发送扫描信号和发光控制信号;和
数据驱动器,用于使用视频数据产生数据信号并向像素单元发送数据信号,
其中亮度控制器通过相加一帧中的视频数据来产生帧数据,并且当帧数据的数值不小于第一值时限制像素单元的亮度,并且当帧数据的数值不大于第二值时不限制像素单元的亮度。
2.如权利要求1所述的有机发光显示器,其中通过发光控制信号的宽度来控制像素单元的亮度。
3.如权利要求1所述的有机发光显示器,其中亮度控制器包括:
数据加法单元,用于相加一帧中的视频数据来产生帧数据;
查找表,用于根据帧数据存储关于像素的发光时间的发光信息;和
亮度控制驱动器,用于根据发光信息发送用于控制发光控制信号的亮度控制信号。
4.如权利要求3所述的有机发光显示器,其中扫描驱动器接收亮度控制信号来产生发光控制信号。
5.如权利要求4所述的有机发光显示器,其中扫描驱动器包括:
扫描驱动电路,用于发送扫描信号;和
发光控制驱动电路,用于发送发光控制信号。
6.如权利要求1所述的有机发光显示器,还包括:
电源单元,用于发送驱动像素单元的驱动电源。
7.如权利要求1所述的有机发光显示器,其中像素单元的亮度的限制根据像素单元显示的图像类型变化。
8.一种有机发光显示器,包括:
包含像素的像素单元,用于接收扫描信号、发光控制信号和数据信号来显示图像;
亮度控制器,用于限制像素单元的亮度;
扫描驱动器,用于向像素单元发送扫描信号和发光控制信号;和
数据驱动器,用于使用视频数据产生数据信号并向像素单元发送数据信号,
其中亮度控制器通过相加一帧中的视频数据来产生帧数据,并且
其中像素单元的亮度限制根据帧数据的数值变化。
9.如权利要求8所述的有机发光显示器,其中通过发光控制信号的宽度来控制像素单元的亮度。
10.如权利要求8所述的有机发光显示器,其中亮度控制器包括:
数据加法单元,用于相加一帧中的视频数据来产生帧数据;
查找表,用于根据帧数据存储关于像素的发光时间的发光信息;和
亮度控制驱动器,用于根据发光信息发送用于控制发光控制信号的亮度控制信号。
11.如权利要求10所述的有机发光显示器,其中扫描驱动器接收亮度控制信号来产生发光控制信号。
12.如权利要求11所述的有机发光显示器,其中扫描驱动器包括:
扫描驱动电路,用于发送扫描信号;和
发光控制驱动电路,用于发送所述发光控制信号。
13.如权利要求8所述的有机发光显示器,还包括:
电源单元,用于发送驱动像素单元的驱动电源。
14.如权利要求8所述的有机发光显示器,其中像素单元的亮度的限制根据像素单元显示的图像类型变化。
15.一种驱动有机发光显示器的方法,包括:
相加输入到一帧中的视频数据;和
当相加的数据的数值不小于第一值时限制像素单元的亮度,并且当相加的数据的数值不大于第二值时不限制像素单元的亮度。
16.如权利要求15所述的方法,还包括:
根据相加的数据的数值确定其中像素单元发光的发光周期的长度。
17.如权利要求16所述的方法,其中使用包含与相加的数据的数值相对应的发光周期的长度的查找表来确定发光周期的长度。
18.如权利要求17所述的方法,还包括:
根据像素单元显示的图像类型改变亮度限制量。
19.如权利要求15所述的方法,还包括:
改变发光控制信号的脉冲宽度来限制像素单元的亮度。
