发明背景

适用于本发明的颗粒材料是疏水的或亲水的。在一个实施方案中,颗粒材料本身是疏水的(例如矿物滑石)。在另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料是通过使用适合的疏水润湿剂或联结剂外涂层使其疏水的亲水材料(例如,在一个实施方案中,颗粒材料具有亲水的核和疏水的外表面)。在再另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料本身是亲水的(煅烧高岭土)。
适用于本发明的亲水颗粒材料有矿物,例如碳酸钙、滑石、高岭土(包括含水高岭土和煅烧高岭土),精选高岭土、膨润土、粘土、叶蜡石、硅石、长石、沙子、石英、白垩、石灰石、沉淀碳酸钙、硅藻土和重晶石;功能性填充物如三水合铝(Aluminum trihydrate)、热解硅石和二氧化钛。非矿物亲水颗粒例子有碳黑、煤灰、灰分废物和其他深色有机材料。
在一个实施方案中,适用于本发明颗粒材料是经热处理的颗粒材料。为了本发明的目的,经热处理的颗粒材料是那些已被加热到高温的颗粒材料以及烘焙颗粒材料、煅烧颗粒材料和烧制颗粒材料。经热处理的颗粒材料通常都是亲水的。具体的例子有煅烧碳酸钙、煅烧滑石、煅烧高岭土、烘焙高岭土、烧制高岭土、疏水处理热处理高岭土、煅烧膨润土、煅烧粘土、煅烧叶蜡石、煅烧硅石、煅烧长石、煅烧沙子、煅烧石英、煅烧白垩、煅烧石灰石、煅烧沉淀碳酸钙、烘焙碳酸钙、煅烧硅藻土、煅烧重晶石、煅烧三水合铝、煅烧热解硅石和煅烧二氧化钛。
依照本发明热处理包括将颗粒材料在温度从约300℃到约1200℃加热约10秒到约24小时。在另一个实施方案中,热处理包括将颗粒材料在温度从约400℃到约1100℃加热约1分钟到约15小时。在又另一个实施方案中,热处理包括将颗粒材料在温度从约500℃到约1000℃加热约10分钟到约10小时。可在空气中、在惰性环境中或在真空下进行热处理。
在这些实施方案中,颗粒材料含有至少约25重量%的、尤其是含约25%到约100重量%的经热处理的颗粒材料。在另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料含有至少约40重量%的、尤其是含约40%到约99重量%的经热处理的颗粒材料。
颗粒亲水材料的表面可通过和至少一种疏水润湿剂和/或联结剂接触来使它具有疏水性。在矿物的工业应用中,特别是在有机体系中,例如在塑料复合物、薄膜、有机覆盖物或橡胶中,使用疏水表面处理来使矿质表面疏水;参见例如Jesse Edenbaum,塑料添加剂和改性剂手册(PlasticAdditives and Modifiers Handbook),Van Nostrand Reinhold,New York,1992,第497-500页,因其对这样的疏水表面处理材料和它们的应用的教导而作为参考结合于此。

将适用于本发明的颗粒材料精细分割。当在这里被使用到时,术语精细分割指的是颗粒材料的单个颗粒度中值(平均直径)小于约100μm。在一个实施方案中,颗粒材料的单个颗粒度中值约为10μm或更小。在另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料的单个颗粒度中值约为3μm或更小。在再另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料的单个颗粒度中值约为1μm或更小。
在这里所用到的颗粒度和颗粒度分布是通过Micromeritics Sedigraph5100颗粒度分析仪来测量的。对于亲水颗粒,在去离子水中进行测量。称量4g的干燥样品到塑料烧杯中,添加分散剂并用去离子水稀释到80ml刻度一致的分散液。然后搅拌料浆并将其置于超声波浴中290秒。通常对于高岭土使用0.5%四偏焦磷酸钠作为分散剂;对于碳酸钙使用1.0%CalgonT一起使用。将各种粉末的典型的密度输入沉降分析仪的,例如对高岭土而言,其典型的密度为2.58g/ml。用样品料浆充满样品池,记录X-射线并通过Stokes方程转换成颗粒度分布曲线。在50%的水平来确定颗粒度中值。
本发明的颗粒材料具有高反射性。在这里所使用到的术语具有高反射性指的是材料具有按照TAPPI标准T646测量得到的至少约为80的块亮度(Block Brightness)。在另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料的块亮度至少约为90。在再另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料的块亮度至少约为95。可在Technidyne Corporation制造的反射系数仪Technidyne S-4亮度测试仪上进行测量,该测试仪使用由Institute of Paper Science或TechnidyneCorporation提供的亮度标准物(纸标签和乳色玻璃标准物)以不超过60天的间隔进行校准。通常从12g的干燥(约小于1%的游离湿气)粉末准备颗粒块或片。样品被松散地置于圆柱支架中,缓慢下压活塞到样品上至压力从约29.5到约30.5psi并持续约5秒钟。卸掉压力并检查片有无缺陷。共准备3片,记录每个颗粒片上的亮度值三次,在每个读数之间旋转颗粒片约120°。然后将九个值平均作为结果。
特别适用于本发明的颗粒材料是惰性、无毒的。在这里所用到的惰性颗粒材料是对园艺农作物和观赏性农作物来说是对植物无毒的颗粒。然而,土壤或其它产生植物的媒介物中或上或与其他材料的独特的组合又是对植物是有毒的(一般是对于不希望的植物如杂草来说的)。例如,农作物的种子可被栽培在4″深的土壤中,而颗粒材料与土壤混合至3″深。在这个例子中,对深度在3″的土壤中的杂草种子来说颗粒材料是具有植物毒性的,但对在4″深处的土壤中的农作物种子来说则不然。可由本领域的技术人员确定给定组合是否具有植物毒性。颗粒材料完全无毒意味着在有效地控制杂草所需要的量,这样的材料对动物、环境、施用者和与本发明有关系的农产品的最终用户(如果存在的话)都不被认为是有害的。
本发明涉及杂草的控制方法,其中在土壤、不希望的植物或产生植物的基质的表面用一种或多种颗粒材料进行处理。尤其是,将适量的颗粒材料和基质的表面(土壤、不希望的植物或产生植物的基质的表面)接触。
在一个实施方案中,基质的整个表面被颗粒材料所覆盖。基质的全覆盖倾向于提供有效的杂草控制以及疾病和害虫的控制。在另一个实施方案中,仅部分表面被颗粒材料所覆盖。在这些实施方案中,部分覆盖有很高的效率,例如不连续覆盖在保证有效的杂草控制的同时,允许来自颗粒材料的光反射和红外辐射。在另一个实施方案中,本发明的方法在土壤、不希望的植物表面或其他产生植物的基质的表面形成了一层或多层高反射性颗粒材料的膜。膜可部分覆盖基质表面、基本覆盖基质表面或完全覆盖基质表面。膜可以连续或是不连续的。
在一个实施方案中,颗粒材料作为精细分割颗粒在挥发性液体如水、低沸点有机溶剂或低沸点有机溶剂/水混合物中的料浆被用到基质中。一层或多层这样的料浆可被喷洒或以别的方式施于基质中。添加剂如表面活性剂、分散剂、固着剂(粘合剂)、低沸点有机液体、高沸点有机液体、盐、农用化学品和有色颗粒可被结合到颗粒材料的料浆中。添加剂也包括油类和非挥发性高沸点有机材料。当被作为料浆使用时颗粒材料是疏水颗粒材料或亲水颗粒材料。
在另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料是作为干燥的粉施于基质中并被结合到基质中(在基质是土壤或其他产生植物的表面时)。这种处理所得到的残留物可能是亲水的或是疏水的。当被作为干燥颗粒使用时,颗粒材料是疏水颗粒材料或亲水颗粒材料,但优选为疏水颗粒材料。
在再另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料作为水和高沸点有机液体的乳化物被施于基质中。在这个实施方案中,将颗粒材料首先和高沸点有机材料相混合,然后和水混合以形成一个稳定的乳化物。颗粒材料与高沸点有机液体的混合可包含高剪切混合,从而在加水后促进稳定乳化物的形成。当被作为乳化物使用时,颗粒材料可以是疏水颗粒材料或亲水颗粒材料,但优选亲水颗粒材料。
可和亲水颗粒材料混合(例如在水中的约3重量%或更多固体)以帮助对园艺基质均匀喷洒处理的涂铺剂(粘着剂)有:改性苯二甲酸甘油酯醇酸树脂类如Rohm & Haas Co.的Latron B-1956;含乳化剂的植物油基物质(cocodithalymide)如Salsbury lab,Inc.的Sea-wet;聚合萜类如DrexelChemical Co.的Pinene II;非离子型清洁剂(乙氧基化妥尔油脂肪酸)如Stephan的Toximul 859和Ninex MT-600系列。

在再另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料含有各种颜色的颗粒,因此当颗粒材料被施于基质(土壤、不希望的植物或产生植物的基质)时,从基质反射的光的光谱或进行的热交换被改变。这样的有色颗粒可能不反光。例子有天然氧化铁如黄色褐铁矿、红色赤铁矿、棕色褐铁矿;黑色氧化铁如颜料黑10;合成氧化铁如矾制铁红和铁红;沉淀红色氧化铁;棕色氧化铁如颜料棕6和褐铁矿;合成黑色氧化铁如颜料黑1和合成磁铁矿;铜黑;铬黑;锌镁铁酸盐颜料如颜料棕11和mapioc tans;炭黑颜料如颜料黑6或7、炉黑、槽法炭黑、乙炔黑、炉黑、骨炭和灯黑;石墨,包括天然和合成石墨,如电炉石墨或人造石墨;苯胺黑如颜料黑1;苏木黑色淀如天然黑3、色淀、苏木颜料;等等。
优选的低沸点有机液体包括水混溶性和有机溶剂。在一个实施方案中,低沸点有机液体含有1到约6个碳原子。在这里所用到的术语低沸点指的是沸点大致不高于约100℃的有机液体。这些液体促进颗粒材料维持于精细分割状态而没有显著凝聚的能力。低沸点有机液体的例子包括甲醇、乙醇、丙醇、异丙醇、丁醇、异丁醇等、二元醇(多羟基化合物)、酮类如丙酮、甲乙酮等和环醚如环氧乙烷、环氧丙烷和四氢呋喃。上面所提到的低沸点有机液体的含水或不含水的组合也同样可以使用。优选的低沸点有机液体是甲醇。
可以通过喷洒到基质的方式使用低沸点有机液体以便于颗粒材料的施用。通常,所使用的低沸点有机液体的量要足以便于形成颗粒材料的乳化物。在一个实施方案中,低沸点有机液体的用量达约乳化物的30%(体积百分比)。在另一个实施方案中,低沸点有机液体的用量从乳化物的约1%到约20%(体积百分比)。在再另一个实施方案中,低沸点有机液体的用量从乳化物的约2%到约10%(体积百分比)。优选将颗粒材料添加到低沸点有机液体中以形成料浆、然后用水稀释该料浆以得到含水乳化物。
对于本发明,包括油类和脂肪酸的高沸点有机液体可被用于将颗粒施于基质中。在这里所用到的术语高沸点有机液体指的是沸点大致高于约100℃的有机液体。通常使用足够量的高沸点有机液体和/或油以便于颗粒材料乳化物的形成。在一个实施方案中,高沸点有机液体的用量达乳化物的约30%(体积百分比)。在另一个实施方案中,高沸点有机液体的用量从乳化物的约1%到约20%(体积百分比)。在再另一个实施方案中,高沸点有机液体的用量从乳化物的约2%到约10%(体积百分比)。将颗粒材料添加到高沸点有机液体和/或油中以形成料浆,或将颗粒材料添加到高沸点有机液体和/或油以及水中以形成乳化物料浆。
高沸点有机液体的例子有植物的、工业的、海生的和石蜡类的油类,包括棉籽油、棕榈油、花生油、玉米油、豆油、蓖麻油、亚麻子油、菜籽油、桐油、奥气油、鱼油、鲸蜡油、鲱油等。此外高沸点有机液体的例子还有脂肪酸如包括C6到C32羧酸的饱和与不饱和脂肪酸。具体例子有己酸、辛酸、壬酸、癸酸、月桂酸、肉豆蔻酸、十五烷酸、棕榈酸、十七酸、硬脂酸、月桂烯酸、肉豆蔻脑酸、棕榈油酸、油酸、亚油酸、亚麻酸等等。可购得的油有Exxon的Orchex产品、Chevron的Volck油、Pennzoil-Quaker State的Pennzspray产品和Sunoco的Sunspray产品。
在另一个实施方案中,将盐结合到颗粒料浆或颗粒基质混合物中。添加的盐有离子盐类如氯化钠、氯化钾、氯化钙、氯化镁、硫酸钠、硫酸钾、硫酸钙、硫酸镁、硝酸钠、硝酸钾、硝酸钙、硝酸镁、碳酸钠、碳酸钾、碳酸镁、亚硝酸钠和亚硝酸钾。
一些高沸点有机液体对增加颗粒组合物的植物毒性特别有效因而进一步增大控制杂草的能力。在这一点上,在一个实施方案中,高沸点有机液体包括含有约9个或更多个碳原子且约20个或更少碳原子的那些;含有奇数碳原子的那些以及有不饱和基团或芳族结构的那些。
得到的料浆或乳化物使颗粒维持在精细分割状态或其中绝大部分的颗粒材料被分散成颗粒度小于约100微米的聚集体,无论使用高沸点有机液体、低沸点有机液体还是高沸点和低沸点有机液体。在一个实施方案中,90重量%或更多的颗粒材料颗粒度小于约10微米。在另一个实施方案中,90重量%或更多的颗粒材料颗粒度小于约3微米。在再另一个实施方案中,90重量%或更多的颗粒材料颗粒度小于约1微米。
当发生凝聚时,料浆或乳化物含有90重量%或更多的聚集体尺寸小于约500微米的颗粒材料。在另一个实施方案中,料浆或乳化物含有90重量%或更多的聚集体尺寸小于约250微米的颗粒材料。
颗粒处理可用于一层或多层精细分割的颗粒材料。施用的材料量随许多因素而变化,例如基质的种类和颗粒材料的种类等等。在任何给定的条件下,施用的材料量可以由本领域的技术人员来确定。该量应足以在颗粒处理所应用到的全部或部分的土壤或其他产生植物的基质上形成连续的薄膜或断续的膜。在一个实施方案中,当表面的外观是白色或所希望的颜色时,颗粒处理特别有效。
在一个实施方案中,当被结合到基质(例如颗粒材料和土壤的混合物被施于土壤)中时,约1%到约99重量%的颗粒材料被用到基质中。在另一个实施方案中,当被结合到基质(如土壤或产生植物的基质)中时,约5%到约80重量%的颗粒材料被施于基质中。
在一个实施方案中,约5%到约50重量%的颗粒材料作为料浆施于基质中(例如,颗粒材料和液体的混合物被施于不希望的植物表面)。在另一个实施方案中,约20%到约40重量%的颗粒材料作为料浆被施于基质的表面。随后可将处理过的基质进行耕作处理以使颗粒材料混合于基质中。
无论被用作灰分,与基质(例如土壤)混合并施用,还是混入料浆(水和或有机液体)并施用,颗粒材料都以至少达到以下目的中至少一者的足够的量被施于基质中:减少一种不希望的植物、减少害虫的存在或害虫的不良作用、减少疾病和增强农作物或其他希望的植物的园艺作用。一般来说,颗粒材料可以在干燥或润湿的情况下与基质混合或覆盖到基质上。可用颗粒材料处理土壤,采用翻地或旋耕来完成混合。
一般颗粒材料可以以任何适当的方式施于基质中。例如通过将颗粒材料与由颗粒材料和产生植物的媒介物或不希望的植物所组成的料浆接触来将其施于基质中。当在产生植物的媒介物上形成一层薄膜时,薄膜可起到发芽前除草剂的作用。或者,当基质是产生植物的媒介物时,可以以粉末形式将颗粒材料施于基质中并任选地将颗粒材料与基质相混合。在另一个实施方案中,可以通过将颗粒材料与松散的产生植物的媒介物(典型的是土壤)相混合以形成混合物并将混合物施于基质(典型的是产生植物的媒介物)中,从而将颗粒材料施于基质中。
在那些颗粒材料与基质混合(如与土壤或其他产生植物的媒介物混合)的实施方案中,混合的深度至少由表面起约1cm。在另一个实施方案中,混合的深度至少在由表面起约3cm到约30cm。在再另一个实施方案中,混合的深度至少在由表面起约5cm到约20cm之下。当与产生植物的媒介物混合时,颗粒材料可以基本均匀混合在其中,或随机的分散在其中。
在一个实施方案中,在混合的生长媒介物中,颗粒材料的用量约为1重量%或更多且约25重量%或更少。在另一个实施方案中,在混合的生长媒介物中,颗粒材料的用量约为2重量%或更多且约15重量%或更少。在再另一个实施方案中,在混合的生长媒介物中,颗粒材料的用量约为3重量%或更多且约10重量%或更少。
除混合到由表面起的某个深度外,颗粒材料可以被混合在栽培媒介物表面以下的不连续的层中。例如颗粒材料可混合到位于表面以下5cm处的7cm厚的层中(由表面起5cm到12cm之间)。
在那些颗粒材料覆盖基质的实施方案中,颗粒材料在生长媒介物或不希望的植物上形成连续的或间断的覆盖涂层或膜。在一个实施方案中,在连续或存在处,膜厚度约为1μm或更厚且约5mm或更薄。在另一个实施方案中,薄膜厚度约为5μm或更厚且约2mm或更薄。
在某些情况下,环境条件如风和雨会减少颗粒材料的覆盖(残留),因此在生长季节期间,为了保持本发明所期望的效果,希望一次或多次施用颗粒。
在一个实施方案中,依照本发明制得的颗粒膜不实质性地影响到所述土壤表面的气体交换。透过颗粒处理物(或所发明处理的残留物)的气体是那些通常通过土壤或产生植物的基质进行交换的气体。这样的气体包括水蒸气、二氧化碳、氧气、氮气和挥发性有机物。
在另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料可形成一层气体非透过膜,它可以限制土壤、产生植物的基质和/或不希望的植物的表面的气体交换。在这个实施方案中,形成了封闭在土壤中形成的气体的气体非透过膜。不能透过本实施方案的颗粒处理物的气体是那些通常通过基质进行交换的气体,这样的气体包括水蒸气、二氧化碳、氧气、氮气和挥发性有机物以及所使用的农用化学品如熏蒸剂。
可将颗粒材料用于控制杂草的方法、用于增强园艺效果的方法、用于控制疾病的方法和用于控制害虫影响的方法中。杂草控制包括以下中的至少一项:抑制现有杂草的生长、防止新的杂草的生长和终止现有杂草的生命。增强园艺效果包括以下中的至少一项:提高农作物和/或观赏作物的生长速度、提高农作物和/或观赏作物的健康、延长农作物和/或观赏作物的寿命、提高农作物和/或观赏作物的所生产的果实或花的数量以及强化农作物和/或观赏作物的根系。疾病控制包括以下中的至少一项:减少农作物和/或观赏作物的病毒疾病发生、减少细菌疾病、真菌疾病和昆虫传播疾病的发生。害虫控制是以下中的至少一项:降低昆虫、蜘蛛类节肢动物和/或线虫类侵袭对农作物和/或观赏作物的伤害,减少土壤或农作物和/或观赏作物生长媒介物中昆虫、蜘蛛类节肢动物和/或线虫类的出没,防止土壤或农作物和/或观赏作物生长媒介物中昆虫、蜘蛛类节肢动物和/或线虫类的出没以及防止昆虫、蜘蛛类节肢动物和/或线虫类对农作物和/或观赏作物的侵袭。
当不再希望继续实施发明的杂草控制方法时,通过常规的耕作方法就将被处理过的基质结合并分散到土壤或其他产生植物的基质中以终止最初应用于基质的处理。
颗粒材料也可以用于果树的疏花,通常是在开花的时候,这样选定枝条上的果实就不会与相邻的果实的争夺果树的养分。在这个特定的实施方案中,将含有水、颗粒材料和一种或多种高沸点有机溶剂的乳化物施于果树上。这导致了许多花的败育,但不是所有的花。这通常发生在施用后的约2个星期以内,在某些情况下,在施用后的约1个星期以内。疏花的结果是从经处理的果树上收获的果实比未进行处理的相似果树上收获的果实更大和更健康。从经处理的果树上收获的果实的口味也得到了改善。
在一个实施方案中,颗粒材料乳化物的施用导致了果树至少约25%(以数量计)的花的败育,从该类果树上收获的果实比未处理的果树大约5重量%或更多。在另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料乳化物的施用导致了果树至少约50%(以数量计)的花的败育,从该类果树上收获的果实比未处理的果树大约10重量%或更多。在再另一个实施方案中,颗粒材料乳化物的施用导致了果树至少约60%(以数量计)的花的败育,从该类果树上收获的果实比未处理的果树大约15重量%或更多。
下面的实施例阐述了本发明。除非在下列的实施例中另有说明,在说明书和所附权利要求中,所有份数和百分比率都以重量计,温度是摄氏度,压力为大气压或接近大气压。
实施例1
对于用用量逐渐增大的Translink77(一种疏水材料)改性的土壤确定水释放曲线。使用空气进口压力值为5巴的压力膜设备(土壤水汽设备,美国加利福尼亚州Santa Barbara的Soil Moisture Eqpt.的1600型)。用土壤(Hagerstown粉砂壤土)和不同量的Translink77(土壤的0、1、2、3、4重量%)填充土壤环(直径48mm,高10mm)。将环和土壤置于静止的水中30天,然后在膜上施加不同的压力(-0.05、-0.1、-0.5、-1、-2、-3大气压)来模拟已知土壤干燥水平。压力差异在-0.05到-0.5大气压的范围里代表是供水很好的土壤,压力差异在-2到-3大气压的范围里代表不容易支撑植物生长的干性土壤。
压力差异和添加疏水颗粒对体积土壤水含量(水体积/土壤体积)的影响如表1所示。

压力差异或土壤水汽张力的降低(即负数加大)干燥土壤,降低了土壤中的水含量。在指定的土壤水汽张力下加大量的疏水颗粒的添加在-0.05到-2大气压的范围里进一步减小了土壤中的水含量。因此疏水颗粒的添加使得水更不易获得,特别是在-0.05到-0.5大气压的供水很好的范围里。
实施例2
将四种杂草种子(稗(Echinochloa crusgalli)、香附子(Cyperusesculentus)、田蓟(Cirsium arvense)、藜(Chenopodium album))和两种农作物(小麦(Triticum aestivum)和高粱(Sorghum bicolor))按6种栽培排列进行处理:
1.栽培在土壤中并覆盖1cm厚的土壤
2.栽培在土壤中并覆盖2cm厚的土壤
3.栽培在土壤中并覆盖1cm厚的含5%(重量/重量)Translink77的土壤
4.栽培在土壤中并覆盖2cm厚的含5%(重量/重量)Translink77的土壤
5.栽培在1cm厚的含5%(重量/重量)置于土壤之上的Translink77的土壤层中,种子被厚度为1cm的含5%(重量/重量)Translink77的土壤所覆盖

土壤是通过4mm筛子的Hagerstown粉砂壤土并加热消毒以杀死地方性杂草种子。将每个物种10粒种子栽培在有5cm土壤的罐中并将处理物压在该土壤上面。每星期将罐浸入2cm深的水层中1到2个小时以对罐供水。每天在每个罐的表面喷上雾。
以随机分组设计安排进行具有3次重复试验的研究。种子被栽培并收割。收割时对每个容器中的植物数量和其在60℃下干燥后的重量进行计量。
用疏水颗粒Translink77改进土壤对种子发芽和生长的影响如表2所示。

数据显示,当杂草或农作物种子栽培或出现在土壤中并被经5%Translink77改进的土壤所覆盖时,种子发芽没有被明显抑制(实验1-4)。可是,如果杂草种子被结合到Translink77改进的土壤中时,种子发芽被极大地减少了(实验5和6)。虽然不希望受任何理论的束缚,但是发明人相信种子发芽的减少是部分由于改进的土壤水的可获得性的降低,如表1所示。
实施例3
实验点是在八月早期旋耕前的5年稳定草场。旋耕后,同年8月29日建立以进行6次重复试验的配对t实验法设计的各为1m×1m的未处理和被处理的土壤的一块土地。被处理的土壤收到1.2kg/m2的Translink77(Engelhard Corp.的一种疏水高岭土颗粒)。通过手工耕作,将Translink77均匀地结合到上3cm的土壤中。在3cm被处理的土壤区域中,Translink77的浓度约为3重量%和20体积%。在第二年的5月6日,从每一块土地的中央剪取生物量样品并称量,然后在60℃的温度下干燥。在每一块土地中央面积为1,195cm2的圆中取样。在土壤未处理的情形中,植物的干燥质量为218.5g/m2,显著高于(p=0.05)从被处理土壤收割到的23.5g/m2。数据显示当土壤用3%疏水颗粒改进后,在被改进的区域里种子的发芽被极大地抑制了。虽然不希望被任何理论所束缚,但发明人相信在被改进的区域中种子发芽的抑制是由于水可获得性的减弱。一些种子发芽的发生可能部分由于种子在被改进的土壤和天然土壤界面的地方发芽,如表2所示。
实施例4
将香附子种子栽培在1cm深的罐中,罐中装有5cm厚的Hagerstown粉砂壤土。对罐进行6种处理:
1.未进行任何处理
2.覆盖不透气、防水的Parafilm覆盖物
3.覆盖5mm厚的Translink77(一种疏水颗粒)覆盖物
4.覆盖1mm厚的棉花籽油覆盖物
5.覆盖1mm厚的含30%(重量/体积)Translink77的棉花籽油覆盖物
6.覆盖1mm厚的含30%(重量/体积)Satintone5HB(一种亲水颗粒)的棉花籽油覆盖物
每星期将罐浸入2cm深的水中1到2个小时。实验是8次重复试验的完全随机设计。覆盖处理对香附子生长的影响(每棵苗的长度cm)如表3所示。

这些数据显示无论是疏水还是亲水材料与棉花籽油的混合物都是比无论是干燥材料还是单独的棉花籽油都更有效的种子发芽的障碍物。这种抑制作用不是由于排除空气的结果,因为Parafilm覆盖物并没有抑制种子的发芽。
实施例5
土壤和用疏水材料(Translink77)处理的土壤的反射光谱使用Licor1800光谱仪在完全的太阳光下进行测量。反射光谱如图1所示(其中用波长对μmol/m2/s作图)。
数据显示用白色材料改进的土壤增加了可见光的反射和红外辐射。
实施例6
对番茄(Lycopersicon lycopersicon)和菜豆(Phaseolus vulgaris)进行如下处理:
1)未进行任何处理
2)喷洒棉花籽油
3)喷洒含30%Translink77的棉花籽油
4)喷洒含30%Satintone5HB的棉花籽油

3、权利要求1的方法,其中被施用到所述深度的产生植物的媒介物包含约2重量%或更多且约15重量%或更少的疏水颗粒材料。

19、权利要求15的方法,其中颗粒材料包含选自碳酸钙、滑石、含水高岭土、煅烧高岭土、膨润土、叶蜡石、硅石、长石、沙子、石英、白垩、石灰石、沉淀碳酸钙、硅藻土和重晶石、三水合铝、热解硅石、二氧化钛、炭黑和煤粉中的至少一种。
20、权利要求15的方法,其中乳化物含有选自棉花籽油、棕榈油、花生油、玉米油和豆油的至少一种。
21、权利要求15的方法,其中高沸点有机液体包含选自包含约9到约20个碳原子的高沸点有机液体、包含奇数个碳原子的高沸点有机液体、包含芳基结构的高沸点有机液体和包含不饱和基团的高沸点有机液体的至少一种。
22、覆有权利要求15的膜的不希望的植物。
23、一块土地,所述土地包含
从表面起到深约3cm到约30cm的、包含土壤和约1重量%或更多且约25重量%或更低的单个颗粒度中值低于约100μm的颗粒材料的上层,其中颗粒材料包含一种或多种精炼高岭土和经热处理的颗粒材料;和
包含土壤、石头、粘土和沙子中的至少一种的下层。
24、权利要求23的一块土地,其中上层包含土壤和约2重量%或更多且约15重量%或更少的煅烧高岭土。
25、减少产生植物的媒介物上或产生植物的媒介物中的害虫的方法,所述方法包含:
将单个颗粒度中值低于约10μm的颗粒材料施于产生植物的媒介物至深度至少约1cm,其中至该深度的产生植物的媒介物包含约1重量%或更多且约25重量%或更少的颗粒材料,且颗粒材料选自经热处理的颗粒材料、滑石、高岭土、硅藻土、三水合铝、热解硅石、二氧化钛、炭黑和煤粉。
26、权利要求25的方法,其中颗粒材料被施用到至少约3cm到约30cm的深度。
27、权利要求25的方法,其中颗粒材料包含含水高岭土并且害虫包含选自细菌、真菌、蠕虫、昆虫、蜘蛛类节肢动物、鸟类、啮齿动物、鹿和兔子的至少一种。
28、权利要求25的方法,其中将颗粒材料在乳化物中施于产生植物的媒介物,所述乳化物含有颗粒材料、水和高沸点有机液体。
29、增大位于产生植物的媒介物中的植物的园艺效果的方法,所述方法包括:
将单个颗粒度中值小于约10μm的颗粒材料施于的产生植物的媒介物的上表面以形成一层厚度约为1μm或更厚且5mm或更薄的膜,颗粒材料的体亮度至少约为80。
30、权利要求29的方法,其中颗粒材料以乳化物的形式被施用到产生植物的媒介物表面顶层,乳化物含有颗粒材料、水和高沸点有机液体。
31、改善产生植物的媒介物中的植物的疾病控制的方法,所述方法包括:
将单个颗粒度中值低于约10μm的颗粒材料施于产生植物的媒介物至深度至少约3cm,其中至该深度的产生植物的媒介物包含约1重量%或更多且约25重量%或更少的颗粒材料,且颗粒材料选自经热处理的颗粒材料、滑石、高岭土、硅藻土、三水合铝、热解硅石、二氧化钛、炭黑和煤粉。
32、权利要求31的方法,其中颗粒材料以乳化物的形式施于产生植物的媒介物,乳化物含有颗粒材料、水和高沸点有机液体。
33、加大从果树上收获的果实大小的方法,所述方法包括:
将包含水、单个颗粒度中值低于约100μm的颗粒材料和高沸点有机液体的乳化物施于具有第一数目的花的果树上,从而使得果树在施用后约2个星期内得到第二数目的花,其中第二数目比第一数目至少小约25%。
34、权利要求33的方法,其中果树选自苹果树、梨树、桃树、李子树、柠檬树、柚子树、鳄梨树、橘树和杏树。
35、权利要求33的方法,其中第二个数目比第一数目至少小约50%。
36、权利要求33的方法,其中高沸点有机液体包含从约9个到约20个碳原子的高沸点有机液体。
37、权利要求33的方法,其中颗粒材料包含选自碳酸钙、滑石、含水高岭土、煅烧高岭土、膨润土、叶蜡石、硅石、长石、沙子、石英、白垩、石灰石、沉淀碳酸钙、硅藻土和重晶石、三水合铝、热解硅石、二氧化钛、炭黑和煤粉的至少一种。
