Description

使用置顶盒提供个人计算机通信和因特网业务的设备和方法
本发明涉及数字有线电视(以下称为“D-CATV”)和请求式图像(video-on-demand)(以下称为“VOD”)业务,特别涉及由使用D-CATV和VOD业务的置顶盒(settop box)提供PC到PC(个人计算机)的通信及因特网业务的设备和方法。
基于现有的模拟CATV网络和ATM(异步转移模式)技术的数字VOD系统目前还正在研究之中。这样的数字VOD系统采用了MPEG-2(移动图像专家组2)技术以便将视频信号数字化,和采用ATM技术以使分配该信号。并且,数字VOD系统使用了CATV设施(即同轴电缆或光缆)在VOD服务器与安装在家中的置顶盒之间传送信号。另外,数字VOD系统的调制-解调电路采用64-QAM(正交调幅)调制,VBS(残留边带)调制和QPSK(正交相移键控)调制。
CATV和VOD业务的接入网技术被分类为ADSL(不对称数字用户线路)网、HFC(混合光纤同轴电缆)网、FTTC(光纤到阻止物)网,有源NT(网络终接器)网和无线电(卫星)接入网。根据频率复用,HFC网使用了中继线路的光纤和安装在用户家里的用户线同轴电缆。FTTC网基于数字传输使用直达用户家里的光纤和在用户家里的同轴或分层的(helical)线对电缆。有源NT网将该网络终接在网络终接器并且在室内分配信号。
同时,接到FTTC网的置顶盒只提供数字CATV业务。因此,FTTC网的置顶盒包括了一个以太网接口,通过使用置顶盒和PC以使支持因特网业务。在这种情况下,该PC还应该包括提供以太网业务的以太网卡,使得操作者必需维护安装在置顶盒和该PC的以太网接口卡。
为了使FTTC网支持因特网业务,该PC除了包括用于D-CATV业务的置顶盒外,还应该包括用于PC的ATM接口卡,这样以来就不希望地增加了成本。特别是,在PCATM接口卡故障的情况下,操作者还应当分开地维护PC ATM接口卡。
通常,人们可使用基于PSTN(公共交换电话网)网络的PC通信和因特网业务。在这种情况下,PC应包括一个调制解调器,但是在电话线被占用时因特网业务不可使用。
因此本发明的目的是提供一种用于支持PC通信和因特网业务的设备和方法。同时通过使用连接到用于D-CATV和VOD业务的网络的置顶盒来支持D-CATV和VOD业务而无需分开通信设备。
本发明的另一个目的是提供一种设备和方法,用于支持PC通信和因特网业务,同时使用FTTC网中的置顶盒及PC来支持D-CATV业务而无需单独的调制解调器,其中使用话音通信的电话线,如同用于一话音通信业务。
根据本发明的一个方面,本发明提供的设备,使用了连接到用于D-CATV(数字有线电视)和VOD(请求式图像)业务的网络的置顶盒以提供PC通信和因特网业务该设备包括安装在该置顶盒中的一个PC接口,用来与该PC通信;和在D-CATV前端(head end)的一个因特网网关(gateway),用于在主干(backbone)因特网与D-CATV用户之间提供因特网业务信道。该置顶盒包括一个控制器,用于分析从该网络已接收的数据中SLIP(串行线路因特网协议)的先前指定的VC(虚拟信道)信元(cell),以便将该VC信元与SLIP标题一起发送,和从该PC接收的数据中分离出SLIP标题,以便将该指定的VC信元与ATM(异步转移模式)上的IP(因特网协议)标题一起发送到该网络。
根据本发明的另一个方面,本发明提供的方法,使用了连接到用于D-CATV和VOD业务的网络的置顶盒提供PC通信和因特网业务,该方法包括步骤:连接D-CATV的前端及VOD的中心到主干因特网;指定固有的IP(因特网协议)地址给该置顶盒及经过RS-232c接口连接到该置顶盒的PC;和分析从该网络所接收数据中的SLIP的事先指定的VC信元以便与SLIP标题一起发送该VC信元,和从该PC接收的数据中分离出SLIP标题,以便将该指定的VC信元与ATM上的IP标题一起向该网络发送。

下面参照附图详细地叙述本发明的优选实施例,其中在这些图中相同的标号表示相同的部件,为便于理解。虽然举例定义和详细地叙述了具体的实施例,如详细的电路单元,以使本发明的主题清楚,但是本领域的技术人员甚至脱离这些细节根据本发明的叙述也能够实现本发明。另外,这里避免了公知的功能及结构的不必要的详细叙述。
本发明提供了57.6kbps或115.2kbps传输速率的PC通信和因特网业务,无需单独设备。即根据本发明的优选实施例,话音通信的电话线通过使用FTTC网例如D-CATV网和VOD业务网中的置顶盒及PC照样用于话音通信。而且,以57.6kbps或115.2kbps的传输速率与D-CATV业务一起,可用于PC通信和因特网业务,无需单独的调制解调器。
图1表示可应用本发明的提供VOD/D-CATV业务系统的方框图。参见图1,网络30是一个D-CATV业务网或VOD业务网如FTTC和HFC网。D-CATV业务网和VOD业务网形成了一个双向信号信道,它是以与形成VOD业务网双向信道的过程相同的过程形成的。因此可照样使用VOD业务网的双向信道。
D-CATV前端10将在卫星或地面波中接收的视频数据和本地节目的视频数据编码为MPEG码,多路复用被编码为传输流(TS)的MPEG码,以将其发送到网络30。根据本发明,D-CATV前端10包括一个因特网网关12,用于提供主干因特网与D-CATV用户之间的因特网业务信道,和一个ATM交换机14,为用户数的增加作准备。VOD中心20包括用于存储图像的一个视频库;一个视频服务器;一个数据服务器;一个ATM处理器和一个ATM交换机。VOD中心20可直接连接到主干因特网。
连接到网络30的置顶盒40被连接到PC 50,经过RS-232C接口与PC 50通信。置顶盒40具有SLIP/PPP(串行线路因特网协议/点到点协议(printto point protocol))服务器功能,以便执行该PS-232C通信。因此,PC用户可经过置顶盒使用该PC通信和因特网业务。
图2表示图1所示的置顶盒40和PC 50的详细方框图。参见图2,置顶盒40包括一个网络接口单元(NIU)70;一个MPEG解码器72;一个音频输出单元74;一个视频输出单元76;一个分段与再装配(SAR)82;一个存储器84;一个主CPU(中央处理单元)86;一个用户接口控制器88;一个遥控器90;按键92;一个显示器94和一个PC接口96。
NIU 70连接到传输媒介如电话线路或光缆,并且包括一个接收器,它利用16 CAP(无载波调幅调相)解调从网络30接收的下游(down-stream)数据,并将它发送到MPEG解码器72;和包括一个发送器,它利用QPSK(正交相移键控)调制从SAR 82接收上游(up-stream)数据。即,NIU 70调制/解调在网络30与置顶盒40之间发送的数据。经过系统总线在主CPU 86控制下,MPEG解码器72解码通过网络接口24接收的MPEG数据流,以使产生音频和视频数据。音频输出单元74变换从MPEG解码器72输出的数字音频数据为模拟信号,并且放大该变换的模拟信号,以将它提供给连接到外部单元(如电视机)的扬声器(未示出)的音频输出端78。视频输出单元76将从MPEG解码器72输出的数字视频数据变换为模拟信号,以将它提供给连接到该外部单元(如电视机)的监视器(未示出)的视频输出端80。在下游操作模式中SAR 82拆装一信元,而在上游操作模式中组装该被拆装的信元。存储器84包括一个ROM(只读存储器)和一个RAM(随机存取存储器)。ROM存储主CPU 86的各个控制程序,而RAM在主CPU 86的控制下存储各种数据。主CPU 86控制置顶盒40的整个操作。根据本发明,主CPU 86分析从SAR 82已接收数据中的SLIP(串行线路因特网协议)的预定VC(虚拟信道)信元,并将它与SLIP标题一起传送给PC接口96。此外,主CPU 86从PC 50接收的数据中分离出SLIP标题,以及经过SAR 82和NIU 70将指定的VC信元与ATM上的IP标题一起发送给网络30。在主CPU 86的控制下,用户接口控制器88控制该用户接口,例如遥控器90、按键92和显示器94。在主CPU 86的控制下,该PC接口96执行RS-232c接口连接,以便与PC 50通信。
PC 50包括了与置顶盒40通信的一个置顶盒接口98。置顶盒接口98是一个RS-232C接口,通常安装在PC中。在本发明的优选实施例中,包含在视窗95(windows-95)中的调制解调器拨号软件(dial-up software)用于置顶盒接口98。
根据本发明,置顶盒40和PC 50具有分配给它们的固定IP(因特网协议)地址。而且,置顶盒40接收该VC值,利用PVC(永久虚拟电路)或SVC(交换虚拟电路)形成到因特网网关的信道。置顶盒40的主CPU 86控制SLIP/PPP(串行线路因特网协议/点对点协议)连接,处理通过PC接口96接收的PC 50的IP包(packet),PC接口96是RS-232C接口。同时,在主CPU 86的控制下,具有其它VC值如VOD信道的数据经过IP/TCP(因特网协议/传输控制协议)层传送到置顶盒40的一个应用(例如MPEG解码器72的VOD引擎)。
现在详细地叙述从PC 50发送包到主干因特网的过程。如上所述,置顶盒40和PC 50具有固定IP地址和在开始状态形成到因特网网关12的信道的VC值。由该用户从PC 50产生的数据(IP/TCP)经过PC 50中的置顶盒接口98和利用RS-232C接口连接的置顶盒40中的PC接口96传送到该置顶盒40的主CPU 86。主CPU 86包括RS-232C端口和主CPU 86支持12KbPs-115.2KbPs的数据传输率。因此,根据本发明,其能够支持57.6kbps或115.2kbps的数据传输率(这是用于PC通信或因特网业务的数据传输率)。在这种情况下,置顶盒40应包括一个时钟发生器,它给主CPU 86提供相应数据传输率的时钟。因此,主CPU 86分离经过RS-232C端口由PC 50发送数据中的SLIP或PPP相关的标题,和经过SAR 82和NIU 70将指定的VC信元与在ATM上的IP标题一起发送给网络30。由于来自PC50的数据经过网络30发送给D-CATV前端10的因特网网关12,因特网网关12分析在ATM端口接收的ATM上的IP包,和变换接收的ATM上的IP包为一般的IP包。之后,因特网网关12使用IP路由传送该IP包给主干因特网。虽然来自PC50的数据经上述的网络30发送给D-CATV前端10的因特网网关12,该数据也可发送给连接到主干因特网的VOD中心20。而且,与主干因特网的连接可使用另一个ATM端口,例如以太网实现。而且,从主干因特网发送该包给PC 50的过程是从PC 50发送该包给该主干因特网过程的逆过程。
从上述可知,根据本发明,使用该置顶盒而不用单独的设备能够以57.6kbps或115.2kbps的传输率提供PC通信和因特网业务。虽然根据本发明的57.6kbps或115.2kbps比在使用以太网接口或PC ATM接口时低,但它大约是现有调制解调器的最大传输率(56Kb/s)的二倍高。而且,由于不需要附加设备,诸如调制解调器,以太网接口卡和PC ATM接口卡,用户可以较低费用和以较高的传输率使用PC通信和因特网业务。
如前所述,根据本发明的实施例,D-CATV和VOD业务的FTTC网络可通过使用置顶盒和该PC提供经过电话线路的话音通信业务,和提供以57.6kbps或115.2kbps的传输率的PC通信和因特网业务与D-CATV业务,而不要单独的调制解调器。
本发明优选的实施例已通过举例给出,并用作为说明本发明的使用及制造的方法。该实施例可由本领域的普通技术人员在不脱离本发明的精神下进行修改。本发明不限于示出的实施例,而是由本发明的权利要求书所定义。

Claims (6)

1.一种用于提供PC通信和因特网业务的设备,该设备使用一连接到数字有线电视D-CATV和请求式图像VOD业务的网络的置顶盒,该设备包括:
安装在所述置顶盒的一个PC接口,以便与所述PC通信;和
安装在所述D-CATV的前端的一个因特网网关,用于提供主干因特网与D-CATV用户之间的因特网业务信道;
所述置顶盒包括一个控制器,用于分析从所述网络接收数据中的串行线路因特网协议SLIP的先前指定的虚拟信道VC信元,与SLIP标题一起发送所述VC信元,和从所述PC接收的数据中分离出该SLIP标题,将该指定的VC信元与异步转换模式ATM上因特网协议IP标题一起发送给所述网络。
2.根据权利要求1的用于提供PC通信和因特网业务的设备,其中,所述PC接口执行与该PC的RS-232C通信。
3.根据权利要求1的用于提供PC通信和因特网业务的设备,其中,所述网络形成双向信号信道。
4.根据权利要求1的用于提供PC通信和因特网业务的设备,其中,所述置顶盒支持了12KbP/s至115.2KbP/s的数据传输率。
5.一种用于提供PC通信和因特网业务的方法,该方法使用了一个接到数字有线电视D-CATV和请求式图像VOD业务的网络的置顶盒,该方法包括步骤:
连接所述D-CATV的前端及所述VOD的中心到主干因特网;
分配固定因特网协议IP地址给该置顶盒及经过RS-232C接口接到所述置顶盒的PC;和
