Abstract
本发明的目的在于提供一种新的液晶化合物,其可通过光刺激而引发相转移,其用于显示器、光电子学、光子学领域中。本发明涉及由下述的一般式(1)表示的液晶化合物(在该式中,R1,R2和R3分别独立地从由氢、烷基、烷氧基、烷氧羰基、烷氧羰基氧(alkoxycarbonyloxy)基、链烷酰(alkanoyl)基、烷酰氧(alkanoyloxy)基、烷氧苯基(alkoxyphenyl),与N-烷胺羰(alkylaminocarbonyl)基组成的组中选择,n表示整数)。

技术领域
本发明涉及光响应性液晶化合物和该化合物的应用。
背景技术
伴随高度的信息化社会的发展,以更加有效处理更多信息为目的,人们针对信息的传送、处理和记录进行了许多光技术的研究。在这样的状况下,人们期待一种,通过利用分子的取向状态的变化,能够自由地控制波长、透过率和偏振光等的光特性的液晶用作极为有用的材料。作为采用液晶的材料,人们知道有非线性光学材料、调光材料等的光学材料。另外,作为采用这些光学材料的制品,已知有显示文字和图像的显示器、光学补偿片等。另外,,光学材料以外,作为纤维、强化塑料等的材料采用液晶。另外,期待将液晶应用于利用其特殊物理性质的,摩擦学材料、导电性材料、半导体材料、以及发光材料上。
从分子的形状来说,液晶性的化合物能够分为2种。其中一种为棒状分子形成的棒状(calamitic):液晶,另一种为圆盘状分子形成的盘形分子液晶。作为实用例子,在目前的液晶显示器中,在承担光学性开关的部分,一般采用棒状液晶化合物,在光学补偿膜(相位差片)部分,一般采用盘形分子液晶化合物。
以宽广的π共轭平面为芯体的盘形分子(圆盘状)液晶形成圆盘状分子通过自己组织的方式而重叠的柱状(columnar)相。针对柱状相,π共轭平面在柱的中心,以一维方式集成化,形成一维的通道。通过该一维的通道,发现接近有机单晶体和非晶硅的高的电荷输送性。另外,盘形分子液晶作为下一代的可印刷电子的基础材料而在世界正在广泛研究。其原因在于:液晶材料的自发取向性、溶解性、柔软性等的优良的特性对于溶液工艺的简便器件制作来说是非常有利的。
呈现盘形分子相的液晶化合物一般呈圆盘状,在中心核或环状核,具有辐射状的侧链。根据圆盘状化合物取向,,发现光学性(极化率)、电子性(电子·电荷输送性),以及力学性(粘度)的异向性。期待灵活使用这样的特性,而将盘形分子液晶应用于显示材料、光电子学材料、光子学材料、摩擦学材料。另外,作为圆盘状分子的独特的性质的负的光学异向性目前最普遍地用于液晶显示器的光学补偿膜。为此,人们强烈地希望具有新的光学特性和/或工艺容易性的盘形分子液晶的开发达到实际产业的程度。
上述各种的物理性质依赖于液晶分子的取向状态。于是,如果可通过光刺激,针对液晶分子的取向状态可,自由地控制相转移,则比如,可通过光,对液晶分子的电荷输送性进行开闭控制。这样的光刺激响应性液晶材料用作光存储器等的信息记录材料等。但是,可通过光而实现盘状分子液晶相的相转移的例子到目前没有报道。Shimizu等人发表了在圆盘状的化合物(苯并菲)中将作为光响应性的化合物的偶氮苯导入侧链的盘状分子液晶化合物(参照非专利文献1)。然而,人们认为,在该盘状液晶化合物中,由于光响应性部位导入于侧链,故认为从分子整体的观点来说,由偶氮苯部位的异性化造成的结构变化并不是诱发相转移程度的大的分子形状的变化。
另外,到目前,没有发现具有光诱发的结晶(固体)相-各向同性的相转移特性的有机化合物。

发明内容
发明要解决的课题
于是,具有下述的问题,即,为了实现液晶化合物的相转移,必须通过光刺激,引发急剧的分子形状的变化。于是,在本发明中,着眼于大环状偶氮苯,而不同于到目前的分子设计,目的在于使圆盘状的液晶核部分本身具有光响应性。本发明人发现,不具有侧链的大环状偶氮苯形成在结晶状态中,分子按照一维方式重合的柱状的结构体;另外,在溶液中,通过光照射,进行阶段性的顺反异构体处理(参照非专利文献2)。
本发明的目的在于提供可通过光刺激,自由地控制相转移的新的液晶化合物。另外,本发明的目的在于提供对于显示器、光电子学、光子学领域有用的新的液晶化合物。
用于解决课题的技术方案
作为深入探讨能够通过光刺激,进行相转移的圆盘状的盘状分子液晶化合物的结果,本发明人发现,在偶氮苯呈环状连接的环状核中具有辐射状的侧链的化合物通过光,呈现盘状分子相的相转移,以及这些化合物呈现从晶体,到液体的相转移,由此完成了本发明。
即,按照本申请,提供了下述的发明。
(1)涉及一种液晶化合物,其由下述一般式(1)表示,

(2)根据上述(1)所述的液晶化合物,其特征在于n为1~4的整数。
(3)根据上述(1)所述的液晶化合物,其特征在于该液晶化合物通过紫外光或可见光的照射而发生相变。
(4)根据(1)所述的液晶化合物,其特征在于该液晶化合物呈现盘状液相。
(5)根据(1)所述的液晶化合物,其特征在于该液晶化合物通过紫外光或可见光的照射而发生结晶相-各向同性相的可逆的相变。
(6)涉及一种光学元件,该光学元件采用(1)~(5)中的任意项所述的液晶化合物。
(7)涉及一种感光性材料,其采用(1)~(5)中的任意项所述的液晶化合物。
(8)根据(7)所述的感光性材料,其特征在于其为光刻成像(photo-patternable)材料,感光油墨。
发明的效果
按照本发明,不仅能够实现光引发的液晶的相转移,而且由分子的结构变化造成的液晶相的转移温度的变化也是可能的。即,本发明可提供能够将液晶物理性质在较宽范围内控制的液晶性材料和液晶组合物。另外,本发明的化合物还能够进行通过光刺激的结晶相-各向同相的可逆性相转移。由于该情况,对于本发明的化合物,期待面向可通过光进行开关控制的光学元件、有机半导体元件、以及光刻成像材料或感光油墨等的感光性材料。

在上述一般式(1)中,R1,R2和R3分别每次出现是独立的,既可以是相同的,也可以是不同的。R1,R2和R3分别表示氢、烷基、烷氧基、烷氧羰(alkoxycarbonyl)基、烷氧羰基氧(alkoxycarbonyloxy)基、链烷酰(alkanoyl)基、烷酰羰(alkanoyloxy)基、烷氧苯(alkoxyphenyl)基、或N-烷胺羰(alkylaminocarbonyl)基。上述取代基的烷基链部分是直链状或,支链状中的任意者。但是,在本发明中,R1、R2或者R3中的至少一者不是氢。换言之,R1、R2和R3的全部为氢的化合物是在本发明的范围之外。
另外,在一般式(1)中,n为整数。在这里,具有一般式(1)的化合物能够以如下一般方式合成,其方法为以还原方式对前体为二硝基(dinitro)化合物(亚甲基桥二聚化硝基苯衍生物,methylene-bridgeddimerized nitrobenzene derivatives)进行还原环化性环化处理,。在合成时,具有一般式(1)的化合物主要作为n在1~10的范围内的化合物的混合物而获得。通过凝胶渗透色谱法精制已获得的混合物,从而能够单独分离出对应于各自n的化合物。在具有一般式(1)的化合物中,n越大,该化合物对于有机溶剂的溶解性越低。此外,如果考虑具有一般式(1)的化合物的立体结构,则在n大于5时,分子难以采用圆盘状结构,认为液晶性原理上降低。于是,在本发明中,最好,n为1~4的整数。
此外,作为具有一般式(1)的化合物的前体为二硝基化合物(亚甲基桥二聚化硝基苯衍生物)比如可通过,下述方法而制造,该下述方法包括(a)依据甲醛的硝基苯衍生物的二聚化步骤,与(b)对于二聚化硝基苯衍生物的取代基的导入步骤。或者,也可通过下述方法而制造二硝基化合物(亚甲基桥二聚化硝基苯衍生物),该下述方法包括(a’)对于硝基苯衍生物的取代基的导入步骤,与(b’)依据甲醛的取代硝基苯衍生物的二聚化步骤。
本发明的液晶化合物的优选的具体例子为下述的化合物,在该化合物中,R1为烷氧基,R2和R3为氢,n为1~4的整数。更优选的具体例子为下述的化合物,在该化合物中,R1为十八烷氧基,R2和R3为氢,n为1~4的整数。在下述的实施例中,列举本发明的由一般式(1)表示的液晶化合物的代表例子,但是本发明的液晶化合物不限于它们。
在本发明的液晶化合物中,由于大环状偶氮苯用作介晶,故呈现盘状分子液晶相。本发明的液晶化合物伴随紫外光或可见光的照射的偶氮耦合(アゾ結合)(-N=N-)的异性化,产生液晶相的相变。产生液晶相的相变的光的波长因一般式(1)中的n值,与侧链(R1、R2和R3)的电子效果和立体效果而变化。
可采用本发明的液晶化合物,制作能够进行光控制的TFT元件,或能够进行光控制的显示器等的光学元件。
还有,本发明人还发现,本发明的液晶化合物在室温(25℃)下,通过光刺激,产生可逆的结晶相-各向同性相转移。产生该相变的光的波长因一般式(1)中的n值,与侧链(R1、R2和R3)的电子效果和立体效果而变化。
由于本发明的液晶化合物的结晶相-各向同性相转移具有可逆性,故可采用本发明的液晶化合物,制作能够反复利用的感光性材料。比如,可采用本发明的液晶化合物,制作能够反复利用的光刻成像(photo-patterning)材料。或者,可采用本发明的液晶化合物,制作能够进行光照射的转印的感光油墨,代替具有热工艺造成的分辨率界限的热转移油墨。另外,本发明的液晶化合物能够应用于对应粘度(摩擦系数)变化而,光装卸可能的粘接技术。
实施例
(实施例1)
液晶化合物1(n=1、R1=OC12H25、R2=H、R3=H)和液晶化合物2(n=2、R1=OC12H25、R2=H、R3=H)的合成
(化学式3)
(1)中间体3的合成
在对硝基苯酚(27.8g,200mmol)中添加水5mL,80℃下进行加热·,搅拌,直至溶解。在该溶液中,添加浓硫酸10mL和甲醛水溶液(35%)10mL,升温到125℃,连续搅拌1个小时。在通过薄层色谱法(TLC),确认对硝基苯酚的消失后,在室温下放置冷却,注入蒸馏水,使固体析出,滤出已析出的固体,将其分散于5%的NaOH水溶液中。通过过滤,将不溶物去除,通过盐酸,对已获得的碱性水溶液进行酸性化处理而析出固体。,将析出的固体过滤出,,通过蒸馏水清洗,之后进行真空干燥,由此获得中间体3(淡黄色固体,产量:26.4g,收获率:91%)。

(2)中间体4的合成
在氮气氛下,在80℃的温度下对中间体3(2.9g,10mmo)、1-溴代十二烷(7.5g,30mmol)、,碳酸钾(6.9g,50mmol)、N,N-二甲基甲酰胺(DMF,50ml)的混合物进行加热,·搅拌4个小时。在通过TLC,确认中间体3消失后,在反应液中添加蒸馏水,通过己烷而萃取。对合并的有机相用蒸馏水清洗1次、用饱和氯化钠水溶液,清洗1次。然后,在有机相中添加无水硫酸镁,将其干燥。在通过过滤,去除固体后,减压去除溶剂。通过将己烷∶氯仿=1∶1的混合液作为洗脱剂的硅胶柱层析,将目标化合物进行分离,减压去除溶剂,获得纯粹的中间体4(白色晶体,产量:3.2g,收获率:51%)。

(3)液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的合成
将中间体4(1.0g,1.6mmol)溶解于无水四氢呋喃(THF)300ml中。相对该溶液,在室温下经过20分钟的时间滴入9.0mL的氢化锂铝无水四氢呋喃(THF)溶液(1.0mol/L),然后在40℃下搅拌3个小时。在反应液中添加蒸馏水200mL,减压去除THF的大部分。通过乙酸乙酯萃取已获得的残渣。对合并的有机相用蒸馏水清洗1次、用饱和氯化钠水溶液清洗1次,,。然后,在有机相中添加无水硫酸镁,对其干燥。在通过过滤,去除固体后,减压去除溶剂。通过将己烷∶乙酸乙酯=20∶1的混合液作为洗脱剂的硅胶柱层析而精制已获得的油(oil)状的残渣,获得包括多个环状低聚物的混合物。进一步通过凝胶渗透色谱法,分离它,获得作为环状二聚物的液晶化合物1(橙色固体,产量:6.4mg,收获率0.7%)和作为环状三聚物的液晶化合物2(橙色油脂(grease)状,产量:13.0mg,收获率1.4%)。

液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的液晶相结构
将通过上述方式获得的液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2密封于玻璃夹芯单元(glass sandwich cell)中,通过具有热台的偏振光显微镜对其观察。图1A为120℃的液晶化合物1的偏振光显微镜照片,图1B为室温下的液晶化合物2的偏振光显微镜照片。液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2均在正交尼科耳棱镜下呈现双折射,并且具有流动性。特别是,液晶化合物1呈现特征在于近晶相的扇形结构(fan texture)(图1A)。
通过差示扫描热量分析(DSC),分析液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的热性能。其结果在图2A(液晶化合物1)和图2B(液晶化合物2)中示出。液晶化合物1在冷却时,从121℃至84℃的范围内呈现液晶相。液晶化合物2在冷却时,在小于60℃的范围内呈现液晶相。
接着,在相应的化合物呈现液晶相的温度下,通过X射线衍射法对液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的液晶相进行分析。已获得的X射线衍射图案在图3A(液晶化合物1)和图3B(液晶化合物2)中示出。在液晶化合物1的液晶相的X射线衍射测定中,观察与比分子长度稍短的分子长度的周期结构相对应的陡峭的衍射峰值。由于该情况,故将液晶化合物1的液晶相识别为烷基链部分地啮合的近晶A相(SmA)。另一方面,在液晶化合物2的液晶相的X射线衍射测定中,仅仅观察到相对应于分子长度的宽的峰值,以及相对应于融解烷基链的宽的光环(halo)。从而可知,液晶化合物2的液晶相为秩序性低的中间相(M)。
液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的光反应性
在紫外光(波长365nm)的照射前和照射后测定液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的氯仿溶液(1.0×10-5M)的紫外可见吸收光谱。其结果在图4A(液晶化合物1)和图4B(液晶化合物2)中示出。在图4A和图4B中,实线表示紫外线照射前的光谱,虚线表示紫外线照射后的光谱。在液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2这两者中,在紫外线照射后,偶氮苯的反式异构体:造成的350nm附近的吸收减少,位于500nm以上的长波长侧的弱吸收增加。同样在无溶剂的薄膜状态的液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2中,观察到几乎相同的变化。显然,由于这些原因,液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2因紫外光照射发生光异向性变化。
液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的光诱导液晶相-各向同性相转移
将液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2密封于玻璃夹芯单元中,在偏振光显微镜观察下照射紫外线。图5A表示120℃下的紫外光照射前的液晶化合物1的偏振光显微镜照片,图5B表示120℃下的刚进行紫外光照射后的液晶化合物1的偏振光显微镜照片,及图5C表示120℃下的紫外光照射10秒后的液晶化合物1的偏振光显微镜照片。图6A表示120℃下的紫外光照射前的液晶化合物2的偏振光显微镜照片,图6B表示120℃下的刚进行紫外光照射后的液晶化合物2的偏振光显微镜照片,及图6C表示120℃下的紫外光照射10秒后的液晶化合物2的偏振光显微镜照片。
在液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的两者中,通过紫外光照射,诱发从异性化以及从液晶相到各向同性相(Iso)的相转移,在正交尼科耳棱镜下观察暗视野(图5B,图6B)。
在这里,在液晶化合物1中,以紫外线照射后的数秒程度,如图5C所示的那样,再成形液晶相。其原因在于由于液晶化合物1的液晶相发现的温度为100℃左右的高温,因此产生热引起的逆异构化。另一方面,在液晶化合物2中,如图6C所示的那样,即使在紫外光照射后,也仍保持发生光诱发的各向同性的状态。其原因在于,由于液晶化合物2的中间相发现的温度在室温附近,故抑制热引起的逆构化。
液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的光诱导结晶相-各向同性相转移
除了观察温度变更为25℃的方面,采用与前述相同的步骤,将液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2密封于玻璃夹芯单元中,在偏振光显微镜观察下照射紫外线。图7和图8分别表示液晶化合物1和2的结晶相-各向同性转移的偏振光显微镜观察照片。图7A和图8A为在25℃下的结晶相的偏振光显微镜照片,图7B和图8B为表示在25℃下照射波长为365nm的紫外线的状态的偏振光显微镜观察照片,图7C和图8C为表示在紫外线照射后将单元加热到100℃后冷却至25℃的状态的显微镜照片,图7D和图8D为表示冷却至25℃的状态下进行第2次的紫外线照射的状态的偏振光显微镜照片。
在液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的两者中,通过25℃下的紫外光照射,诱发从异性化以及液晶相(Cry)至各向同性相(Iso)的相转移,在正交尼科耳棱镜下,观察暗视野(图7B,图8B)。
接着,将部分地进行向各向同性相的相转移的试样加热到100℃,然后冷却至25℃,此时,朝向各向同性相进行相转移的部分再次变为结晶相(Cry)(图7C,图8C)。另外,再次对整体为结晶相的试样进行第2次的紫外线照射,其结果,与第1次的紫外线照射相同,诱发异构化以及液晶相(Cry)至各向同性相(Iso)的相转移,在正交尼科耳棱镜下,观察暗视野(图7D,图8D)。这些现象针对液晶化合物1和液晶化合物2的两者而观察。该情况表明,这些化合物的结晶相-各向同性相的相转移是可逆的,可采用这些化合物形成能够反复使用的感光性材料。
(实施例2)
图9A~图9C表示采用本发明的液晶化合物而制作的TFT元件的结构例子。图9A的顶电极型TFT元件包括基板10;基板10上的栅极20;覆盖栅极20的栅极绝缘膜30;覆盖栅极绝缘膜30的有机半导体层40;形成于有机半导体层40上的源极50和漏极60。在这里,可采用本发明的液晶化合物形成有机半导体层40或栅极绝缘膜30中的任意一个。通过对采用本发明的液晶化合物而形成的有机半导体层40或栅极绝缘膜30,照射紫外光或可见光,可控制TFT元件的电特性。
图9B表示采用底电极型TFT元件的结构例子。图9B的结构与图9A所示的元件的不同点在于:按照与栅极绝缘膜30接触的方式形成源极50和漏极60;以及按照与栅极绝缘膜30、源极50和漏极60接触的方式形成有机半导体层40。对图9B的元件的光照射的作用与图9A所示的元件相同。
在图9A和图9B的元件中,在采用本发明的液晶化合物而形成栅极绝缘膜30时,位于其上的有机半导体层40必须使用于TFT元件的特性控制的紫外光或可见光以充分的强度透过。
图9C表示顶栅极型TFT元件的结构例子。图9C的TFT元件包括基板10;间隔开地设置于基板10上的源极50和漏极60;按照覆盖源极50和漏极60的方式形成的有机半导体层40;形成于有机半导体层40上的栅极绝缘膜30;形成于栅极绝缘膜30上的栅极20。
在图9C的元件中,在采用本发明的液晶化合物而形成有机半导体层40时,基板10,或者栅极绝缘膜30和栅极20的叠层结构中的任意者必须以充分的强度使用于TFT元件的特性控制的紫外光或可见光透过。或者,在采用本发明的液晶化合物而形成栅极绝缘膜30时,栅极20,或者基板10和有机半导体层40的叠层结构中的任意者必须以充分的强度使用于TFT元件的特性控制的紫外光或可见光透过。
基板10、栅极20、源极50和漏极60可采用相关领域技术公知的任意的材料而形成。另外,不采用本发明的液晶化合物的栅极绝缘膜30和有机半导体层40可采用相关领域技术公知的任意的材料而形成。
(实施例3)
图10表示采用本发明的液晶化合物而制作的液晶显示器的结构例子。图10的液晶显示器包括一对透明基板110(a,b);由一对透明基板110(a,b)夹持的液晶层120和滤色器130;设置于一对透明基板110(a,b)的相应板的外侧的光学补偿板140(a,b)与偏振片140(a,b);设置于光提取侧的偏振片140b的表面上的反射防止层180;设置于背光(图中未示出)侧的偏振片140b的表面上的增亮膜160和导光板170。在这里,滤色器130、光学补偿板140(a,b)、增亮膜160、导光板170以及反射防止层180为也可根据需要而设置的任意选择的层。在这里,在图10的液晶显示器中,可采用本发明的液晶化合物形成液晶层120或者光学补偿板140(a,b)中的任意者。
在通过本发明的液晶化合物形成液晶层120时,通过以位置选择的方式照射紫外光或可见光,能够改变显示器的显示内容。
或者,在通过本发明的液晶化合物形成光学补偿板140(a,b)时,通过照射紫外光或可见光,可控制显示器的视角特性或显示色。另外,在该场合,液晶层120可采用惯用的棒状液晶分子而形成。另外,也可在透明基板110(a,b)上设置电场施加机构(电极等),该机构用于控制液晶分子的取向状态而改变显示内容。
Claims (8)
1.一种液晶化合物,其特征在于其由下述一般式(1)表示,一般式(1)
(在式中,R1、R2和R3分别独立地从由氢、烷基、烷氧基、烷氧羰基、烷氧羰基氧基、链烷酰基、烷酰氧基、烷氧苯基,与N-烷胺羰基组成的组中选择,n表示整数,其中,R1,R2和R3的全部为氢的情形除外)
2.根据权利要求1所述的液晶化合物,其特征在于n为1~4的整数。
3.根据权利要求1所述的液晶化合物,其特征在于该液晶化合物通过紫外光或可见光的照射而发生相变。
4.根据权利要求1所述的液晶化合物,其特征在于该液晶化合物呈现盘状液相。
5.根据权利要求1所述的液晶化合物,其特征在于该液晶化合物通过紫外光或可见光的照射而发生结晶相-各向同性相的可逆的相变。
6.一种光学元件,该光学元件采用权利要求1~5中的任意项所述的液晶化合物。
7.一种感光性材料,其采用权利要求1~5中的任意项所述的液晶化合物。
8.根据权利要求7所述的感光性材料,其特征在于其为光刻成像材料,感光油墨或光敏胶粘剂。
