发明概述
本文中公开了抗弯曲多模光纤。本文中公开的多模光纤包括折射率渐变的芯区和包围且直接毗邻该芯区的包层区,该包层区包括折射率下陷的环形部分,或“下陷包层环”或“环”,其包括相对于包层的另一部分下陷的相对折射率。优选该芯的折射率分布具有抛物线形状。下陷折射率环形部分包括含有多个孔的玻璃、或掺氟玻璃、或含有多个孔的掺氟玻璃。

在某些实施例中,芯半径大(例如大于20μm),芯折射率低(例如小于1.0%),而且弯曲损耗低。优选本文中公开的多模光纤在850nm下呈现小于3dB/km的光谱衰减。我们还发现旋转该多模光纤能进一步提高具有有孔的包层的光纤的带宽。对于旋转,我们表示对光纤施加或给予旋转,其中在光纤从光纤预成型件中被拉出时,即当光纤的至少某种程度仍被加热且能够承受非弹性转动位移、而且能够在光纤完全冷却后基本保持转动位移时给予旋转。
光纤的数值孔径(NA)优选大于将信号导入光纤的光源的NA;例如,光纤的NA优选大于VCSEL源的NA。该多模光纤的带宽随Δ1MAX的平方逆向地变化。例如,Δ1MAX为0.5%的多模光纤能产生的带宽是除芯Δ1MAX为2.0%外其它方面相同的多模光纤能产生的带宽的16倍。
在某些实施例中,芯从中心线径向地向外延伸至半径R1,其中12.5≤R1≤40微米。在某些实施例中,25≤R1≤32.5微米,而且在这些实施例中的某些中,R1大于或等于约25微米且小于或等于约31.25微米。
在某些实施例中,芯具有小于或等于1.0%的最大相对折射率。在其它实施例中,芯具有小于或等于0.5%的最大相对折射率。
在某些实施例中,该光纤在800与1400nm之间的所有波长下呈现不大于1.0dB、优选不大于0.5dB、更优选不大于0.25dB、甚至更优选不大于0.1dB、还优选不大于0.05dB的绕10mm直径芯棒1匝的衰减增加。

宏弯曲性能根据FOTP-62(IEC-60793-1-47)通过围绕10mm或20mm直径的芯棒缠绕一匝(“1×10mm直径宏弯曲损耗”或“1×20mm直径宏弯曲损耗”)并利用过满注入条件测量由弯曲引起的衰减增加来确定。对于具有低宏弯曲损耗的光纤,该测量通过在芯棒上缠绕多匝来进行,以提高精确度。通过将总损耗除以缠绕芯棒的圈数,可将宏弯曲损耗归一化为1匝/m。根据FOTP-204利用过满注入来测量带宽,除非另外注明。在某些情况下,可利用受限模式注入(RML)来测量带宽。在这些情况下,仅将光信号注入测试光纤的芯中。可通过使用光斑大小小于或等于测试光纤的芯的直径的光源来实现RML。例如,1)利用限制孔径的光;2)光斑大小小于或等于测试纤芯直径的发光二极管或激光光源;或3)利用来自纤芯大小小于或等于测试纤芯大小的常规多模光纤(无下陷包层)的光。在某些情况下,通过使用受限模式注入条件,包含下陷包层的多模光纤的RML带宽(例如在850nm或1300nm下测得)会比利用过满注入测得的这些光纤的带宽更高。例如,某些光纤在利用受限模式注入时在850nm具有大于1GHz-Km的带宽,而当利用过满注入测试时它们具有小于750MHz-Km的带宽。

此处公开的多模光纤包括芯和包围且直接毗邻芯的包层。在某些实施例中,芯包括锗掺杂的二氧化硅,即氧化锗掺杂的二氧化硅。可在本文所公开的光纤的芯内,具体在其中心线处或其附近单独或组合地采用除锗之外的掺杂剂,以获得期望的折射率和密度。在某些实施例中,此处所公开的光纤的折射率分布从芯的中心线到外半径是非负的。在某些实施例中,光纤的芯中不包含降低折射率的掺杂剂。
通过降低芯折射率(Δ)可提高多模光纤的带宽,因为该带宽与Δ2成反比。例如,如果芯Δ从1%减至0.5%,则带宽将提高4倍。然而,降低芯折射率将导致光纤弯曲性能的降级。可进一步减小芯直径以改善弯曲性能,但减小芯直径增加了使光纤到连接器的损耗或联接损耗增大的风险,因为光纤对与连接器或另一光纤的失准的容差减小,即由横向失准引起的给定偏移对于较小的芯直径成为更高百分比的误差。
此处公开的多模光纤提供低弯曲损耗,而且在某些实施例中能在不将芯半径减小到增大连接损耗风险的程度的情况下提供降低的芯折射率。
在此处公开的多模光纤中,芯是折射率渐变的芯,而且优选芯的折射率具有抛物线(或基本为抛物线)形状;例如,在某些实施例中,芯的折射率分布具有α形状,其中在850nm下测出的α值约为2,优选在1.8与2.3之间;在某些实施例中,芯的折射率可具有中心线下降,其中芯的最大折射率和整个光纤的最大折射率离中心线有一小距离,但是在其它实施例中,芯的折射率没有中心线下降,芯的最大折射率和整个光纤的最大折射率位于中心线处。抛物线形状延伸至半径R1,而且优选从光纤的中心线延伸至R1。如此处所使用,“抛物线”因此包括基本为抛物线形状的折射率分布,其可能在芯中的一个或多个点处稍稍偏离2.00的α值;以及具有小变化和/或中心线下降的分布。参考附图,芯20被定义为在抛物线形状结束的半径R1处终结,与包层200的最内半径重合。
包层200的一个或多个部分可由包覆材料构成,该包覆材料例如可在沉积工艺期间被沉积,或以诸如套管型光学预成型装置中的管之类的封套的形式来提供,或沉积材料和封套的组合。包层200被至少一种涂层210包围,涂层210在某些实施例中可包括低模量主涂层和高模量二次涂层。

I.偏移折射率下陷的环形部分

优选内环形部分30具有大于4微米的径向宽度。在某些实施例中,折射率下陷的环形部分50的最小相对折射率Δ3MIN小于-0.10%;在其它实施例中,Δ3MIN小于-0.20%;在再其它实施例中,Δ3MIN小于-0.30%;在又其它实施例中,Δ3MIN小于-0.40%。
Δ1MAx优选小于或等于2.0%,更优选小于或等于1.0%,甚至更优选小于1.0%,还优选小于或等于0.8%;在某些实施例中,Δ1MAX大于或等于0.4%且小于或等于1.0%,以及在其它实施例中,Δ1MAX大于或等于0.5%且小于或等于0.75%。
光纤的数值孔径(NA)优选大于将信号导入光纤的光源的NA;例如,光纤的NA优选大于VCSEL源的NA。多模光纤的带宽关于Δ1MAX的平方逆向地变化。例如,Δ1MAX为0.5%的多模光纤能产生的带宽是除芯Δ1MAX为2.0%外其它方面相同的多模光纤能产生的带宽的16倍。
在某些实施例中,芯外半径R1优选不小于12.5μm且不大于40μm,即芯直径在约25与80μm之间。在其它实施例中,R1>20微米;在再其它实施例中,R1>22微米;以及在又其它实施例中,R1>24微米。
图2是此处公开的光波导光纤100的截面图的示意图(未按比例),该光波导光纤100具有芯20和直接毗邻且包围芯20的包层200,包层200由内环形部分30、折射率下陷的环形部分50以及外环形部分60构成。

图3是此处公开的多模光纤的第一方面的实施例的另一集合的示意图。折射率下陷的环形部分延伸至包层200的最外围并形成包层200的最外围,即延伸至光纤的玻璃部分的最外围,因此在该情况下R3=R4,外环形部分60不存在。在其中在折射率下陷的环形部分50中存在孔的实施例中,优选至少一薄二氧化硅层形成最外玻璃表面,因此孔不会展现到包层的最外围上。图4是图3的光波导光纤的截面图的示意图(未按比例)。
II.无偏移折射率下陷的环形部分
参考图5和6,在本文的第二方面中公开了多模光波导光纤,其包括:芯20,其从中心线径向地向外延伸至芯外半径R1,而且具有以%表示的相对折射率分布Δ1(r),其中最大相对折射率百分比为Δ1MAX;以及包层200,其包围且直接毗邻芯20,即与其直接接触。

光纤的数值孔径(NA)优选大于将信号导入光纤的光源的NA;例如,光纤的NA优选大于VCSEL源的NA。多模光纤的带宽随Δ1MAX的平方逆向地变化。例如,Δ1MAX为0.5%的多模光纤能产生的带宽是除芯Δ1MAX为2.0%外其它方面相同的多模光纤能产生的带宽的16倍。

制作了此处公开的光纤的多个示例并对它们以及若干比较性光纤进行了弯曲性能测量。
示例1-比较例
第一示例是康宁股份有限公司的InfiniCor50μm光纤,其具有125微米玻璃直径,包括50微米直径的具有抛物线(α=2)形状的折射率渐变的GeO2-SiO2芯(相对于纯二氧化硅包层的最大Δ为1%)和固体二氧化硅包层(无下陷环形区)。
示例2
将490克的SiO2(密度为0.36g/cc)微粒火焰沉积到1m长×25.8mm直径的固体玻璃棒上,该固体玻璃棒具有折射率渐变(具有抛物线(α=2)形状,且相对于纯二氧化硅具有1%最大折射率)的GeO2-SiO2芯和薄二氧化硅包层,其中该棒的芯/包层(包层=棒直径)比为0.98。然后此组件如下地烧结。首先在由氦气和3%的氯气组成的氛围下在1000℃下将该组件干燥2小时,接着在100%氧气氛围下以32mm/min将其传动通过设置为1500℃的热区,然后在同样的氛围下以25mm/min将其再传动通过热区,最终在100%氧气下以6mm/min烧结,以将微粒烧结成“含氧籽(oxygen-seeded)”的第一过包层预成型件。将该预成型件放置在设置为1000℃的氩气净化的保温炉中24小时。然后将预成型件放置在车床上,其中包含2.1%重量百分比的GeO2微粒的4900克的SiO2(密度为0.44g/cc)被火焰沉积到1米长的折射率渐变的无孔GeO2-SiO2芯、靠近包层的无孔二氧化硅、“含氧籽”的第一过包层预成型件上。然后此组件如下地烧结。首先在由氦气和3%的氯气组成的氛围下在1000℃下将该组件干燥2小时,接着在100%氦气氛围下以6mm/min将其传动通过设置为1500℃的热区,以将微粒烧结至无孔的GeO2-SiO2折射率渐变的芯,该芯被无孔二氧化硅近包层包围,该近包层被“含氧籽”的二氧化硅环包围,该二氧化硅环部被含氧籽的二氧化硅-二氧化锗环包围然后被无孔的二氧化硅-二氧化锗(在850nm最大Δ为0.1%)纯净玻璃的最终过包层光学预成型件包围。然后将该预成型件放置在设置为1000℃下的氩气净化的保温炉中24小时。利用具有约20cm长的热区且设置为约2000℃的回火炉将该预成型件拉成三段10km长度的125微米直径的光纤,其中第一段10Km长度在无旋转的情况下以10m/s拉成,而第二和第三段10Km长度分别以10m/s和20m/s拉成,接着在缠绕到存放线轴之前对光纤进行常规的双向旋转。
对这些光纤的端面的900倍放大的SEM图像分析示出25微米半径的无孔固体二氧化硅-二氧化锗芯被约0.5微米的无孔二氧化硅内包层包围(轴向上的总环形厚度W2约为0.5微米),该内包层被包含约0.3微米直径的孔的29.5微米外半径的含孔隙近包层区包围,该近包层区被包含约3微米直径的孔的33.5微米外半径的含孔隙包层区包围(轴向上的总环形厚度W3约为8微米),该包层区被具有约125微米外径的无孔的二氧化硅-二氧化锗外包层包围(所有轴向尺寸从光纤的中心测量)。总的包含孔隙的环形区域包含3.4%的区域面积百分比的孔(100%体积的O2),在该区域中平均直径为0.65微米,而最小孔直径为0.025微米,最大直径5.2微米,从而导致在光纤截面中有总数约为300的孔。总的光纤孔隙区域百分比(孔的面积除以光纤截面的总面积乘以100)是约0.65%。对于20m/s的旋转光纤,在850nm下测得的带宽大于2.00GHz-km(具体是2.03GHz-km),10mm直径芯棒缠绕1匝的弯曲衰减增加在1550nm时为0.1dB,在850nm下约为0.5dB。因此,0.1的弯曲损耗小于两倍(1/Δ1MAX)2的乘积,或2(1/1)2=2dB。纤芯具有50微米直径的折射率渐变(具有抛物线(α=2)形状(1%最大Δ))的GeO2-SiO2芯。对于10m/s的旋转光纤,在850nm下测得的带宽大于1.50GHz-km(具体是1.86GHz-km),10mm直径芯棒缠绕1匝的弯曲衰减增加在1550nm时为0.1dB,在850nm下约为0.5dB。对于10m/s的未旋转光纤,在850nm下测得的带宽大于0.75GHz-km(具体是1.47GHz-km),绕10mm直径芯棒缠绕1匝的弯曲衰减增加在1550nm时为0.1dB,在850nm下约为0.5dB。

测量了示例1-8的光学性质。根据FOTP-62(IEC-60793-1-47)通过围绕10mm或20mm直径的芯棒缠绕一周(“1×10mm直径宏弯曲损耗”或“1×20mm直径宏弯曲损耗”)并测量弯曲引起的衰减增加,测量了各个光纤的一部分的弯曲性能。根据FOTP-204利用过满注入测量了带宽。

Claims (23)
1.一种多模光纤,包括:
折射率渐变的玻璃芯;以及
包围所述芯且与所述芯接触的包层,所述包层包括包围所述芯的折射率下陷的环形部分,其中所述折射率下陷的环形部分包括含有多个孔的玻璃。
2.如权利要求1所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分与所述芯接触。
3.如权利要求1所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述包层还包括包围所述折射率下陷的环形部分的外环形部分,其中所述外环形部分包括无孔玻璃。
4.如权利要求1所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述包层还包括包围所述芯的内环形部分,其中所述内环形部分包括无孔玻璃。
5.如权利要求4所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分包围所述内环形部分。
6.如权利要求5所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述包层还包括包围所述折射率下陷的环形部分的无孔外环形部分。
7.如权利要求1所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分中的多个孔包括15微米的最大孔直径。
8.如权利要求6所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分中的多个孔包括范围从大于0.005微米到小于1微米的孔直径。
9.如权利要求1所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述孔非周期性地设置在所述折射率下陷的环形部分中。
10.如权利要求1所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分延伸至所述包层的最外围。
11.如权利要求8所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述外环形部分延伸至所述包层的最外围。
12.一种多模光纤,包括:
折射率渐变的玻璃芯;以及
包围所述芯且与所述芯接触的玻璃包层,所述包层包括折射率下陷的环形部分;
其中所述芯在850nm下具有以%表示的最大相对折射率Δ1MAX;
其中所述芯和所述包层提供:(a)在850nm波长下大于750MHz-km的带宽;以及(b)在1550nm波长下由于弯曲引起的以dB表示的绕10mm直径的芯棒缠绕1匝的衰减增加小于或等于两倍(1/Δ1MAX)2的乘积。
13.如权利要求12所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分包括含有多个孔的玻璃、或掺氟玻璃、或含有多个孔的掺氟玻璃。
14.如权利要求13所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分偏离所述芯。
15.如权利要求13所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分与所述芯接触。
16.如权利要求13所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分延伸至所述包层的最外围。
17.如权利要求13所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述包层还包括延伸至所述包层的最外围的无孔玻璃外环形部分。
18.如权利要求13所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述光纤是旋转光纤。
19.如权利要求13所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述受限模式注入带宽在850nm波长下大于1GHz-km。
20.一种多模光纤,包括:
从中心线延伸至半径R1的折射率渐变的玻璃芯,其中R1>20微米;以及
包围所述芯且与所述芯接触的包层,所述包层包括折射率下陷的环形部分和外环形部分,其中所述折射率下陷的环形部分包围所述芯,而所述外环形部分包围所述折射率下陷的环形部分且与所述折射率下陷的环形部分接触;
其中所述芯在850nm下具有小于或等于0.80%的最大相对折射率Δ1MAX;
其中所述折射率下陷的环形部分包围所述芯且与所述芯接触,而且具有最小相对折射率Δ2MIN;以及
其中Δ1MAX>0>Δ2MIN。
21.如权利要求20所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分具有绝对值小于200%-μm2的分布体积。
22.如权利要求20所述的多模光纤,其特征在于,所述折射率下陷的环形部分包括含有多个孔的玻璃、或掺氟玻璃、或含有多个孔的掺氟玻璃。
23.一种多模光纤,包括:
从中心线延伸至半径R1的折射率渐变的玻璃芯;以及
包围所述芯且与所述芯接触的包层,所述包层包括内环形部分以及折射率下陷的环形部分;
其中:所述内环形部分包围所述芯;所述折射率下陷的环形部分包围所述内环形部分;所述芯在850nm下具有最大相对折射率Δ1MAX;所述内环形部分在850nm下具有最大相对折射率Δ2MAX;所述折射率下陷的环形部分在850nm下具有最小相对折射率Δ3MIN;Δ1MAX>Δ2MAX>Δ3MIN;以及所述内环形部分具有宽度W2>0.4微米。
