Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及表现出改进的抗弯曲引入的失真的光纤,更具体地说,涉及支持高振荡模传播的大模场(LMA)光纤,该高振荡模表现出比纤芯的折射率足够低的有效折射率,从而最小化了弯曲引入的失真。
背景技术
在光纤技术领域中,使用大模场光纤的兴趣在增长,特别是对于以光纤为基础的光学放大器等的制造,因为大模场光纤已知是可以克服各种非线性缺陷,例如拉曼和布里渊散射,从而使得相比于具有传统纤芯配置的现有技术光纤实现了显著的功率增加。但是,大模场的使用将增加光纤相关敏感性的存在,例如宏弯曲损耗、模间耦合以及对光纤折射率分布中非一致性的敏感性。
现有技术中至少有两种不同的方案来开发适合于高功率放大用途的LMA光纤。在一种解决方案(基本是机械的解决方案)中,使用极其具有抗弯曲的棒状光纤。通过强迫光纤保持基本笔直,可以显著消除模间耦合和弯曲损耗。但是,在这种光纤的多数“场-field”应用中,需要弯曲、甚至缠绕光缆。因此,限制光纤弯曲的物理性能被认为是不实际的方案。另一种解决方案是通过限定将要使用的具体“缠绕量”、然后根据具体的缠绕半径(和匝数)使用光纤来管理弯曲损耗。
尽管可以用适度的大模场的传统光纤设计来适当地配置这些方案,但是没有发现它们可以对LMA光纤有效,光纤弯曲的(例如在场中缠绕光纤需要的)最小量被发现可以在传输信号模式中引起显著失真(例如,有效面积的减少)。弯曲引入的损耗和模间耦合的传统管理方法导致了具有实质上因弯曲而减少的有效面积的光纤配置。
因此,本领域中需要提供一种大模场光纤,其模场强度不会在各种光纤应用中光纤被弯曲时严重失真。而且,提供抗失真模式的能力会减少非线性变异,还可以有其他益处,例如相比于现有失真敏感模式而具有改进的增益介质与信号模式之间的相互作用。
发明内容
现有技术的需要通过本发明得到解决,本发明涉及表现出改进的抗弯曲引入的失真的光纤,更具体地说,涉及支持高振荡模传播的大模场(LMA)光纤,该高振荡模表现出在纤芯区域中比弯曲光纤的等效折射率小的有效折射率,从而最小化了失真。
根据本发明,在光纤内使用高振荡模(“高振荡”定义为具有大Δneff)将形成光纤弯曲时传播信号特性的最小化扰动。当光纤弯曲改变了等效折射率分布时,高振荡模的使用将保持传播模的有效折射率在弯曲引起的等效折射率之下,从而使得传播(高振荡)模分布到整个纤芯。对比地,当在现有技术的LMA光纤中只传播基模时,基模的有效折射率将大于一定区域的弯曲引入的等效折射率,形成“禁带”。当使用本发明的LMA光纤高振荡模时,没有“禁带”。
在阶跃型折射率光纤中,如果量Δneff=ncore-neff为大则认为模式是“高振荡”模。对于更复杂的光纤设计,纤芯中可能存在超过一个折射率,这些情况下Δneff可以如下定义:

如果典型弯曲半径已知,而且弯曲光纤等效折射率大于高振荡模的有效折射率,则认为根据本发明的模式是充分的“高振荡”模式。这可以表达为Δneff>Δnbend~ncoreRcore/Rbend。或者,如果Δneff>0.5(λ2/Aeff)或0.5(λ/Rcore)2,其中“0.5”可以在一定程度上变化只要其保持是较小的值,已经发现0.25-1的范围是可以接受的,则可以将模式定义为充分“高振荡”模式。这样的模式将表现出相对于传统光纤的实质的弯曲引起的失真的抗性,即使典型弯曲半径在制造时未知。

具体实施方式
随着纤芯半径变大,且模面积超过~600μm2(即,大模场,或LMA光纤),弯曲引入的失真的影响对与传统缠绕光纤封装相关的任何弯曲半径非常明显。该事实在图1和2的图表中示出,图1和2示出了两个不同的LMA光纤在弯曲“前”和“后”的模拟模式分布。图1示出了“低差异-contrast”阶跃型折射率LMA光纤的模式分布,其中Δn在0.0005的量级(即,ncore-ncladding≈0.0005)。图1的曲线A示出了弯曲前的模式分布,曲线B是关于相对“温和”的半径弯曲的(24cm的量级)。图2的模式分布曲线是关于相对“高差异”的LMA光纤(Δn=0.01)的。曲线C是关于“弯曲前”的分布,曲线D是用于图1的LMA光纤的在相同弯曲半径(24cm)下的曲线图。两种情况下,光纤都具有相同的(大)纤芯半径(Rcore),43μm。图1和2的曲线相比,它们的模场有些不同,但是都表示出了基本相同等级的模面积减少,即使是对于该最小的弯曲值。
低差异和高差异LMA光纤的显著的弯曲引入的失真可以参考图3解释,图3示出了光纤弯曲对LMA光纤折射率的影响。如图所示,曲线I是阶跃型折射率LMA光纤的折射率的曲线,示出了ncore和nclad的传统值。应当理解,尽管以下讨论是关于阶跃型折射率LMA光纤的应用,本发明的理论同样适用于各种其他类型的LMA光纤,例如渐变型折射率光纤、抛物线型折射率光纤等。回到图3,当允许在该光纤内传播传统基模(LP01)信号时,该基模的“有效折射率”定义为neff,其描绘为水平曲线II,且位于纤芯折射率ncore之下定义距离Δneff。一旦沿着LMA光纤引入预定弯曲,弯曲光纤等效折射率nbend将以图3的倾斜线III所示的方式变化。总体来说,等效/弯曲折射率可以如下定义:

其中Rbend定义为光纤弯曲的曲率半径。
图3的分析允许对大失真的发生进行估计。具体地,当弯曲引入的折射率变化Δnbend变得大于基模有效折射率Δneff时,纤芯部分将具有小于模有效折射率的等效折射率。纤芯的这一部分(图3中阴影)是“禁带”区,意思是光波被排除出(或者“渐渐消失”在)纤芯的该部分。由于现在该模式被排除出纤芯的一部分,将倾向于产生大失真、显著减少的有效面积和可能减小的与纤芯中可能存在的增益介质的相互作用。大失真的直观条件可以表达为:
Δnbend=ncoreRcore/Rbend>Δneff=|ncore-neff|
该条件对LMA光纤更严格。也就是,不仅弯曲引入的折射率增加了,而且模间距将迅速减少为Δneff~(λ/Rcore)2。
相反地,根据本发明与弯曲引入的失真的基本无关的模式的有用条件可以表达为:
Δneff>CΔnbend
其中“C”是与容许的弯曲引入的失真程度相关的常数。对于不同应用容许度可以不同,C的范围大约是0.5到1.5,保证了在大多数条件下弯曲引入的失真具有对模有效面积相对小的影响。
现有技术LMA光纤设计没有认识到或者解决这个基本的问题。事实上,尽管平坦模式(flattened-mode)设计对某些LMA光纤形成了改进的面积,但是这些设计实际上由于减小Δneff而加重了具有非常大的纤芯尺寸的光纤的弯曲引入失真。如上提及的,不管总光纤差别如何,与弯曲引入的失真相关的基模折射率差Δneff大部分由纤芯尺寸决定,因此“高差异”光纤(与低差异相反)的使用不能避免失真或者解决问题。
在本发明的一个具体实施例中,上述的定义条件通过使用足够高阶的模式可以满足,以致Δneff>CΔnbend。图4包含的折射率分布图示出了高阶模(HOM)的有效折射率和弯曲光纤的等效折射率之间的关系。图4的示图基于与图3相同的弯曲半径和纤芯尺寸,因此曲线III(弯曲光纤的等效折射率)是一致的。但是,根据本发明,HOM的应用可观地增大了Δneff的值,如图所示。也就是,有多个高阶模,例如LP05,LP07等很好地保持在neq的值之下,消除了利用这些高阶模时“禁带”的产生。因此,即使在光纤弯曲时,这些HOM也将在大纤芯面积内以小的或不失真进行传播。实际上,通过得知光纤弯曲的具体范围(例如,Rbend在3和40cm之间)、纤芯尺寸和相关的纤芯及包层的折射率值,可以确定并使用适当的HOM,减小与光纤弯曲相关的失真。
根据本发明的支持高振荡模的示例光纤折射率特征曲线在图5中示出。如图所示,该特定的分布不是传统的“阶跃型折射率”分布,而是多层折射率,其允许与高振荡模式的更加有效的输入和输出耦合。
图6显示了对于与具有图5的折射率分布的光纤相关的两个不同高阶模式的作为弯曲半径的函数的有效纤芯面积(以μm2测量)的示图。为了比较的目的,还示出了一个相似的阶跃型折射率LMA光纤基模的有效纤芯面积。很清楚与LP07高振荡模式相关的基本恒定的有效面积证实了其在弯曲引入的失真可能发生时的值。对比地,HOM LMA光纤的LP03模和阶跃型折射率LMA光纤的基模都表现出了作为弯曲半径范围3-24cm的弯曲的函数的有效面积的显著减小,该范围是光纤在场应用中发生的弯曲半径的公共范围。因此,根据本发明已经发现不仅选择适当的光纤很重要,选择适当的抗弯曲失真LMA模也很重要。
图7示出了HOM LMA光纤两种不同高阶模,特别是LP03(非充分高振荡)模和LP07(根据本发明足够高振荡)模,的模拟场分布(线性灰度级的平方根强度)。如图所示,LP03模在条件从“笔直”光纤到“弯曲”光纤变化时经历了大失真。对比地,LP07模在条件改变时经历了非常小的失真。具体地,图7(a)显示了与LP03模相关的分布曲线,第一曲线(曲线I)与“不弯曲”相关,曲线II与12cm的弯曲半径(Rbend)相关。弯曲引入的失真在曲线II中很清楚。对比地,图7(b)示出了类似的高振荡LP07模的曲线,曲线III与“不弯曲”相关,曲线IV与Rbend=6cm相关。曲线IV证明了即使弯曲比曲线II相关的弯曲的更严重也只有较小或不失真。这是根据本发明发现的情况,因为LP07模位于Δn07=0.0047处,这比6cm的弯曲Δnbend=0.001大几倍。如上讨论的,发生大失真估计在Rbend=nRcore/Δn处,其对于LP03(较低阶模式)是11cm,对于LP07是1.3cm,从而LP03模具有适度的抗弯曲引入的失真(好于基模),根据本发明证实了LP07模具有对弯曲引入的失真具有优秀的抗性。
使用根据本发明的HOM LMA光纤的另一优点是HOM信号表现出了沿光纤的对模与模耦合的抗性。图8是传统光纤和本发明示例HOM LMA光纤的模拟模式重叠(弯曲/不弯曲)的曲线。该重叠示出了高阶模减小了模间耦合,因为实质上小于“1”的重叠值可以引起在弯曲转变处的模耦合。根据本发明的LMA光纤的有效使用将需要信号耦合入和耦合出光纤的抗弯曲高振荡模。该耦合可以通过例如使用光栅、锥形(taper)光纤、相板、分立光学器件等完成。光纤纤芯分布可以表现为传统阶跃型。或者,可以使用各种纤芯折射率分布来改进模耦合、弯曲损耗和/或其他特性。这样的特征可以包括渐变型、抛物线型或双层折射率分布。根据本发明形成的这种光纤的重要应用包括光纤放大器和激光器。对于这些(及其他)应用,希望在光纤内以相同模式或者不同模式引导多个信号。例如,如上所述,可以以光纤抗弯曲信号模式放大信号,也可以以其他模式对泵光(pump light)引导。增益介质可以加入到本发明的光纤中。本发明形成的光纤中也可以有其他结构,例如泵引导双包层(pump-guiding double-clad)、空气包层或者低折射率覆层等。实际上,可以通过在信号模式强度峰值处设置增益材料来配置增益与信号模式进行强相互作用,而与噪声模式(例如)进行弱相互作用。本发明的光纤可以进一步包括微结构纤芯和/或包层区域,可以特别地配置为最小化极化相关性,可以配置为表现出预定的(基本恒定)极化相关性(例如双折射briefringence)。
本领域技术人员应当清楚在不脱离本发明精神和范围的情况下可以对本发明进行各种改变和变形。具体地,尽管本发明的各方面关于阶跃型折射率LMA光纤进行了描述,也可以使用各种其他类型的LMA光纤,例如渐变型折射率光纤,只要该光纤能够支持高阶模(HOM),光纤的有效折射率保持小于对给定弯曲半径范围内弯曲等效折射率。因此,本发明意图覆盖这些改变和变形,只要其落入所附权利要求及其等价范围内。
Claims (9)
1.一种在大模场LMA光纤内传播光学信号的方法,使得弯曲引入的失真最小化,该方法包括:
提供LMA光纤,其具有半径为Rcore、折射率为ncore的纤芯区域,当所述LMA光纤沿着预定弯曲半径Rbend弯曲时所述LMA光纤表现出Δnbend的弯曲光纤折射率;
从LMA光纤内以定义的波长λ传播的高振荡模信号耦合输出信号,该高振荡模信号表现出有效模面积Aeff,该高振荡模被选择来表现出有效折射率neff,使得ncore-neff,即Δneff,大于足够使弯曲引入的失真最小化的预定阈值。
